Harry Potter - Series Fan Fiction ❯ Secrets of Light and Dark ❯ Meeting of a Whole New Meaning ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Yet another summer has ended as the fall chills began to seep through his light sweater. He paid no mind to the tingling down his spine. He looked up to the sky. It was something about this coming school year that gave him an uncomfortable feeling. Harry, who was a few days passed 15 years, has changed since Voldemort was out of his life. He felt no more worries or throbs in his head. But somehow this was different…

This feeling has never occurred to Harry before. It was enough that even he himself could worry just a little. It was just nerves, he thought. He shook his head and decided to let it pass.

Harry let a new thought enter his mind; Going to the Weasley's for yet another year to come. He had always enjoyed seeing all his friends at the old house where they gathered every year before heading on to Hogwarts. He had always enjoyed seeing Ron and his mother, and Ginny too. Fred and George somehow always made his day with their prankster ways. At least he had something good to think about now. Ever since he moved in with Sirius, he felt he had more freedom to even dream. He gazed further into the hazy evening distance.

“Harry?” said a voice from inside the house. “Shouldn't you be packing for tomorrow?” Sirius asked sticking his head out the door.

“Yeah, I'll be right there,” he said shaking his head back into reality. Sirius pulled his head back into the house and shut the door.

Later on that night, Harry couldn't sleep. He lay awake staring at the ceiling, just thinking. He could here the fire crackling in the other room. He thought of finally getting to see all his friends again. Hedwig squalled at him once, seeming to tell him that tomorrow was a big day and that he should get some rest. Harry looked at his clock, which was beaming 1:01 am. Harry nodded his head to the snow white owl and said quietly, “You're right… Goodnight Hedwig.” Hedwig didn't reply, but instead she closed her eyes and sunk her head deep down in her chest. Harry took off his glasses and set them on the oak nightstand next to him. Very slowly, he finally drifted off to sleep.

“Harry,” said Sirius, shaking his shoulder, “the Weasleys are here.”

Harry woke and looked at his clock. It was now 6:45. He jumped out of bed and slipped his clothes on. Ron entered his room, smiling that he finally got to see him again. “Well,” he said laughing just slightly, “It's… been a while.”

“I… didn't know you guys were coming. Didn't I always come up before we got on the train?”

“Well it was dad's brilliant idea to come here instead,” he said in sarcasm as he usually did. He began to scratch his side.

“Okay,” said Harry, “then how are we going to get to the station? The train leaves in two hours.”

“Why don't you go ask him?” said Ron pointing at his father, who was talking to Sirius about the old days of magic.

“Ah, Harry my boy!” said Mr. Weasley patting him on the shoulder. “I tell you Sirius, this is one fine boy you have living with you. He's sure is an amazing fellow,” he said smiling in pride.

“He sure is,” said Sirius, “he sure is…”

It made Harry feel good that they were talking positive about him. He wasn't used to it. He was always used to being told of what a scum bag he was and that he was disrespectful. But that was all different now that the Dursleys were out of his life.

“Well,” said Mr. Weasley abruptly, “it was nice talking to you Sirius, but I do believe we need to get heading to the station.”

“Have a good year, Harry,” said Sirius smiling.

“Bye Sirius.”

“Well, let's go, shall we?”

As the Weasleys, along with Harry, stepped outside, they saw Mrs. Weasley and Ginny standing in the driveway. “Hi Harry!” squealed Ginny.

“Hush child,” her mother spat, “You don't want to wake the neighbors do you?” She finally softened her face with a warm smile. “Hello Harry, how are you?”

“I'm good Mrs. Weasley,” he turned to Ron's father. “Umm, excuse me, Mr. Weasley?”

“Yes, my boy?”

“I don't mean to be nosey, but how exactly are we going to get to the station?” asked Harry looking up to the tall man.

“Heh, that's an odd question,” he laughed, “What else? We're going to use magic!”

“Uhhhhh, magic, sir? I thought magic was forbidden outside of school grounds.”

“Not when they're with an adult, no.” Mr. Weasley then whistled very loudly with his two fingers. Out of the sky came a flying blue car.

“So you got a new one?” asked Harry. He couldn't help but be curious.

“Yes, it took a while, but I did and it's in just as good condition.”

They all entered the car and Mr. Weasley started the engine. As they began to take off, they could see a light in front of them. Before he knew it, Harry and the rest were already in Digon Alley. Harry couldn't help but be surprised of how fast it was. They all exited the car and headed for the station. They met up with Hermione and Hadgred along the way.

Only a few hours later, they heard the Train's whistle. Mrs. Weasley shouted as she normally did. Once they finally boarded the train, she began to jump up and down and wave her hand back and forth. “Goodbye Ginny! Goodbye Ronald! Goodbye Harry! Goodbye Hermione! Ginny, don't forget to write! Oh and Ron! Don't forget to wash your socks once you've dirtied them!”

Ron rolled his eyes. “I KNEW she was going to say that.”

Harry laughed until he heard the door to their cart open. A young girl, around the same age as them, stood in the opening with a black cat and a shy look on her face. Her waist-length brown hair seemed to hide her face. Her bangs hung just halfway over her eyes. She seemed to have a shy pout as she glared at Ron. “Would it be okay if I sat here?”

Harry cleared his throat and said, “Sure, go right ahead.”

The girl sat down next to Ron along with her cat who sat in her lap. She had her hands so tight together her knuckles were white. She sat with her head down.

“So are you new here?” asked Hermione happy to see that she at least has a girl to talk to.

“No…” she said lightly. Her voice was soft yet a little on the high side. “I'm from Hufflepuff… but I'm getting transferred to a new house.”

“Oh well… I'm Hermione,” she said to her.

“Ron…” he said in a low voice.

“And I'm-”

“Harry Potter; am I right?” she asked him smiling a little.

“Y-yeah,” he said kind of shocked, “So you've heard about me?”

“Mmm hmm,” she said fidgeting her fingers.

“So, who are you then?” asked Hermione smiling to comfort the shy girl.

“Kathryn… Kathryn Wakefield…” she said quietly. “I have a sister on board the train, too.”

“Really? What's her name?”

“Kellie… She's being transferred, too. She's most likely to get Slytherin…”

“Oh,” said Harry looking down at his feet. He kept his comments to himself. “I hope you get Gryffindor… It's a good house…”

“That's what we're in,” stated Hermione. She looked over to Ron. “What's wrong with you?”

“Hmm?” he looked up, “Oh, nothing…” he glared at Kathryn, who looked terribly sad. He leaned a bit further to see her face from which her hair was hiding. He wanted to ask, but was too nervous to even make an attempt. Besides, why was he finding the means to care, anyway? He just sighed and slouched back in his seats and looked out the window.

Kathryn's cat meowed and leaned up to smell Ron's sleeve. Kathryn put her hand on her cat's head. “Now Menalene, don't be rude. The cat looked back at Kathryn, seeming to know she understood. They both seemed to have the same exact same eyes.

“Then, where is your sister then?” asked Ron sounding like he just woke from a deep sleep.

“Well…”

“I TOLD YOU, IF I WANT TO SIT IN THIS CART THEN BELIEVE ME BY THE HEAVENS I WILL SIT HERE!!!”

“Oh, really? Who made you boss?”

The teen just sighed. Her black hair with frosty blue tips seemed to frizz and her green eyes narrowed. “No one, I just don't think it's fair that YOU have to tell me where to sit!”

“Well it just so happens that WE were here first!!!” shouted the blonde boy.

“Well then, I'm joining in too!”

“I don't think so because this seat,” he stopped to put his legs across the bench, “was reserved for us.” He smirked, watching the girl get frustrated. “Crabb, Goyle,” he said looking at the two boys in the other seat.

“Huh uh, no way,” one said cowering in fear.

“She's evil… she's too scary…” said the other.

“Bunch of cowards…” muttered the boy.

The girl smiled and pointed her finger down to the ground. The blonde rolled his eyes and sighed as he put his feet on the floor. The girl sat down and started filing her nails.

“Oh, now you think you're so pretty, do you not?” he spat.

“Only because it's true,” she said blowing on her fingertips.

“Well I think you're just too bossy,” he said to her.

“You think I'm bossy?! Go look in a mirror, pal! That's bossy right there! And greedy and dishonest, too!”

“Oh, so you think coming into a reserved cart and telling us to make room's not being bossy?!”

“You got that right!” She froze for a minute and then straitened herself out, holding out her hand and smiling. “Kellie Wakefield,” she said.

“Draco Malfoy,” he said smiling also, taking her hand and shaking it. Crabb and Goyle stared at them like they had just seen an old man in a birthday hat running down the street. They stood shocked.

“Stop staring!” shouted Kellie. The two boys gasped and looked separate ways.

“I don't know, she's probably still trying to find a cart to sit in,” Kathryn said. Her voice grew fainter and fainter. She seemed sad to the rest of them.

It was something about Kathryn that made Ron feel sorrowful. Every time he caught glimpse of her eyes, he felt sadness seep down in the bottom of his heart. She looks so innocent and sad, he thought. He wondered why… He had mixed emotions.

Kathryn looked back at Ron. Ron caught her eyes and he cleared his throat. “So, uhhh,” he began, “how… old are you?”

“Fifteen,” she said. She began to smile a little, making Ron blush.

“Me- me too,” he said a little embarrassed. What kind of a question was that? He thought.

“My, my,” said Hermione, “we're here already?”

The train began to stop and everyone could hear the loud squeaky breaks as the wheels slid on the tracks. They all exited the train and headed to the boats to get to Hogwarts.

Draco grimaced. “Who's that filthy rat hanging out with that Weasley?” he mumbled.

Kellie didn't hear Draco say his words of insult, but instead she ran over to Kathryn and hugged her tightly. Draco stood dumbstruck.

“Wait a minute,” he said scratching his head, “how do you two know each other?”

“We're sisters,” said Kellie after talking to Kathryn. Everyone turned quiet and looked at her. Kellie scowled. “What, we're sisters, so what? Do I have to explain the circle of life to you?!” Everyone shook their heads. “Good,” she said, “Then let's go on to the boats.”

Everyone walked over to the canoes and got in them. Draco suggested that they not sit in the same boat with Harry and his friends. Kellie asked Kathryn if she wanted to go with her and Draco, but Kathryn refused. She sat beside Ron on the boat.

Kellie crossed her arms and put one leg over the other. Draco looked at her and asked, “Which house are you in?”

Kellie put her hair behind her ears. “I was in Ravenclaw but I'm getting transferred and so is my sister Kathryn. We don't know which house, though.”

On the separate boat sat Ron and Kathryn. They had gotten separated from Harry and Hermione along the way. Kathryn sat and set her chin on her hands. “The stars are so pretty,” she said to Ron.

Ron couldn't think of a comeback, so he gave her an exceptional answer. “Yeah,” he said.

“Has it always been this pretty?” asked Kathryn.

“As far as I can remember, he said. He smiled, looking out into the sky. He could see all of the new children point their fingers to the sky and to all the floating candles hovering above their heads. It was a beautiful night, indeed.

Kellie sat staring at the water as they glided along the river. Draco tapped her shoulder, making Kellie jump and slap him in the face.

“Ow, what was that for?!”

Kellie put her hand on her heart and caught her breath. “You idiot! You scared me, what do you think that was for?! You about gave me a heart attack!”

“But you were sleeping,” he said to her.

“I was not; I was looking at the water!”

“But why?”

“Because water is powerful. It's the most powerful element there is. Nothing can stop it.”

“Ah, so that's why,” said Draco smiling. “That's a good reason…”

“Yeah it used to be my favorite element… but now I like fire and electricity.”

Oh,” he said looking down at the water also.

Ron cleared his throat. “So umm,” he began, “Why did you look so sad on the train?”

Kathryn looked up and smiled just slightly. “Nervous, I guess. I don't know… I've had this feeling for a while,” she said. She looked over to Ron and smiled, making him blush a little. “But thanks for asking; I've never had friends that asked…”

Ron widened his eyes. “Umm… sure, no problem.” Kathryn smiled and patted his shoulder. “I'll say,” he said in astonishment. He smirked a little bit. He could tell he had found someone he could trust; someone he could share his time with. At that point, from the touch on his shoulder, he knew he had found himself a new friend.
