Chapter 4

Groggly poring a cup of coffee Vanessa glanced at the paper on her table. The number of dead bodies as of late in the city had grown at an alarming rate over the past few days. Not to mention the fact that the paper stated that somehow all blood had been drained from the corpse before they were left to be found with two puncture wounds on the neck. The newspaper and the authorities and nicknamed the serial killer "Dracula" and were still puzzled as to WHY they would need so much blood. One paragraph mentioned a plot for black market blood selling that could be the cause. Another just said that it was a serial killer who had a fetish for blood.

Something in Vanessa's mind, even that early in the morning, alarmed. Of course she had been around vampires before but the vampires of this day and age were a bit pasafist. They tended to feed only when needed and normally didn't actually kill the person. Instead of one dead person, they would feed on five or so random people. It would quench their thirst but also leave the humans very much alive; tired and drained but alive.

So someone new must have invaded her city as of late. Someone who was obviously either arigent or unknowing of the new ways of the vampire...or both.

Maybe this is what Setsuna had come to warn her yesterday. Serenity had never come up against a real live vampire before. Normally they were just witches/worlocks or senshi themselves that wanted power that only by defeating Earth's guardians could obtain.

Well...Vanessa had her work cut out for her at least and she was a bit happy about it. It was something to take her mind off of her troubles as of late.

Gulping down the last bit of her coffee in the mug she stood up and went to grab her coat. There was a few people she needed to talk to about this before sundown. No need to be caught in some alleyway with a vampire breathing down her neck. Sure Vanessa was a sorta Vampire hunter but she still didn't like the hunts.

It wasn't till dusk that Vanessa strolled up to her home, none of the leads she had tried worked out. Her keys in hand to unlock the door but found the door unlocked. Blinking the senshi's mind went straight to the bad things that could have possibly walked into her house.

A few monsters.

A few bad senshi.

Quickly she charged into her home, brooch close in hand in case she had to quickly transform, only to find the one person she didn't quite expect sitting on her couch quietly reading one of her own magazines.

Candy?!

Now what happened, Vanessa thought gulping down her emotions. There was no need to act flustered and odd in front of the woman.
"..Candy?" She asked stepping forward, the woman's face instantly shot up from the magazine her nose was buried in, her eyes locking with Vanessa's instantly creating a blush on her cheeks and the flustered feeling that she had tried pushing down came back instantly with a vegance.
"..Vanessa!" The brunette woman stood up, setting the magazine to her side and walking over to her.

Had the Inu told Candy in a anger spite?! Did the woman know everything? Was all that work trying not to destroy the woman all been in vaine?!

Although the look on her face wasn't one of anger, or spite either. It was a somber look. Was she here to reject her?! Vanessa couldn't handle that. Her heart hurt even thinking about it. She'd rather die alone then to die being rejected by her.

Shit. That sounded like love, didn't it?!

"Inu Yasha came home last night," Candy began.

O shit! Vanessa swallowed. He did tell her! That inu was going to die!

"Yeah?" Vanessa stumbled out trying to keep her calm and nerve, which were both very frayed and threating to unwind entirely as she stood there in the gaze of Candy. Say something damn it! Say something that either exonerated the damn Inu or incrimanated the half demon so she could do something next!

"..Did you and him get into a fight or something?" Candy blinked looking at her worried. "I asked him and he told me to talk to you."

Letting go of a breath she was subconiously holding Vanessa bobbed her head forward as if a lot of weight was removed from her shoulders just then. So the Inu had listened to what she had asked. He hadn't been a total ass to her about the knowalage he had inatvertanly learned.

"..Yeah..a fight..actually I got into a fight with Dante as well. Both men wanted me to choose them and I couldn't," Well that was sorta a half truth. It was enough information that Candy seemed to accept it shaking her head.
"Well then I've got to help you win at least one of them back!" She giggled throwing a thumbs up into the mix then throwing Vanessa off a bit.

Did she want either of the men back? Vanessa glanced away knowing the truth. She really didn't want either of them back and in truth she wanted the woman in front of her more then anything but that wasn't going to happen.
"..It's fine really Candy," Vanessa muttered quietly. "I don't need help with it. It was my own doing." Which of course was the truth. Another half true to keep the questions low. All Vanessa needed was to blurt out that she loved the woman and it was she whom she wanted.
"No! I insist!" Candy broke in again grabbing her hand and dragging her toward her door.
"Hey wait!" Vanessa yelled who was now very visably flustered over this whole thing. Couldn't she just let it be?! It wasn't like Vanessa was visibly in tears or anything.
"Love weights for no man..or woman!" Candy looked back grinning. "Tonight we'll hit the mall before it closes and get you an outfit that would make Dante and the Inu come crawling back on their hands and knees, begging for forgiveness and then tomorrow we'll go out demon hunting!"
"Demon hunting?!" Ok now Vanessa was utterly confused.
"..Well yeah," Candy stopped by her door turning her head, looking adorably cute. "They are both half demon after all. It was a play on words. I thought it was kind of funny."
"Yeah funny," Vanessa chuckled nervously. "So you want to follow them..and then what?"
"Well then we'll put you in the picture somewere so they can see the all dolled up and pretty you."

Ok that was a simplistic way to view love. Vanessa couldn't help but laugh at this. Well it was more so a more lusty view on love actually. There was no emotional connection with the whole concept of "Love at first sight" although Dante that view might work on, but the Inu was a whole nother matter.

Not to mention she had no intention of really getting back with either of them till this whole infatuation was sorted out.

But.

Maybe if she played along with this whole outragious idea Candy had come up with that she could spend some extra time with the woman and figure out her true feelings without alarming the poor woman.

Without destroying her views of herself.

"Ok." Vanessa laughed watching Candy just light up instantly. Somehow she could do that so easily.

The woman's heart was always on her sleeve, fearlessly. Sometimes made Vanessa jealous. After all it would be a whole lot easier if she could do that but then again it would mean Candy would know.

"Really?!" She exclaimed.

Vanessa nodded as her hand was taken again and pulled out the door. Hopefully what ever outfit Candy decided she should buy wasn't to much. She realized she couldn't really say no to the woman and if she thought she looked cute in an expensive one, well the urge to buy it would be greatand then she'd be broke..

It was nightfall once more, he could feel the sun's rays take leave of the Earth again. Narsist sat up in his sleeping quarters, not a hair out of place, his silver tipped cane beside him, leaning up against his *bed* for him to grab. Tonight he would hunt again while his new lacky would search out the keys he so desperatly needed to gaine the power he wanted. To throw the world into utter chaos that he loved so much. So he could admire himself in a mirror again and not fear the sun anymore.

Slipping out of his resting area, quickly taking his cane into hand he left his santuary to find food.

A man did need to eat after all.

He'd think about his plans when he got back.

A couple of bags swong about them as they walked back from their mini shopping spree. Ok so Vanessa had to get Candy to buy that dress she had tried on. It didn't take much convincing either when they were trying on clothes. The woman beside her, now giggling over something she had said, still looked as cute and sweet as ever. How ironic her name was Candy. Who ever named her did an excellent job. It fit her perfectly.

Shit. The feelings she held for the woman weren't flying away like she so wished they would.

But then again the want for those feelings to fly away was the one thing that was flying away and the sad thing about it is she really didn't mind at the moment. Everything had went perfectly.

It almost seemed like a date really.

With that thought Vanessa's cheeks flushed and quickly she turned her head coughing. No. It wasn't a date. Candy had just taken her shopping for a dress for one of her boyfriends. Hell, Vash would probably see Candy in the dress she had bought more then herself which of course made the senshi of the phoenix jealous. Nothing that cute should be waisted on HIM. Hell, Vanessa thought, that man didn't know what a treasure he had in his arms.
"Vanessa, are you alright?" Candy's voice broke in startling her as she jumped a little and turned her head laughing, her cheeks still flushed.
"I'm fine, just thinking about how Dante and the Inu are gonna react when I walk up wearing this dress." She lied.
"I know!" Candy gleemed clapping her hands together in front of her looking toward her. "You looked beautiful in it! I'm so glad it wasn't expensive either! I would have had a hard time telling you to buy it if it was expensive after all."

Beautiful?

Vanessa's flushed cheeks weren't cooling down at the moment. Her mind was going crazy with a buzz of emotions. For at least a moment Candy had thought she was beautiful. Probably not in the way she really WANTED it to mean but...

But it was better then nothing!

When Dante or Inu Yasha ever told her she was beautiful she never felt the swirl of emotions like what just happened. Not even when they were first dating did she feel that way really.

"You look tired Vanessa, maybe we should stop somewere and get something to drink." Candy said her head turned and looking toward a small sidewalk cafe that had an empty table and was still open.
"Nah I'm fine really," Vanessa laughed nervously. "I should probably get home anyway."
"..Ok," Candy said sounding a little pouty.
"..Of course unless you want something to drink. If that's the case you should have just said something!" Vanessa said looking over at the small cafe again.
"No, I'm fine. It's just we never get to spend time like this together as of late." Candy then stated looking toward her. "You have Dante and Inu Yasha to take up your time and Vash usually takes up mine. I just didn't want the night to end so early."

Huh?

Quickly shaking her head to remove the unwanted thoughts (the fact that the last statement Candy had said could be taken so wrong) Vanessa took a deep breath. She didn't want it to end either, but if she let it go on any longer she would do something inapropriate to the woman.

And then her secret would truely be out.

Their friendship ruined.

"..Well then we'll have to do it another time really," Vanessa said. "A girls day out!"
Nodding Candy smiled although something about that smile bothered her a bit.
"Yeah!" Candy responded. "Should I walk you home or are you fine?"
"I'm fine," Vanessa responded. "You can go if you want."
"But I just said I don't want to go," Candy then giggled. "Well didn't want it to end early but it's the same thing."
"Fine," Vanessa caved in. "Were did you exactly want go at this time of night?"
"Your house." Candy grinned causing Vanessa to almost fall. She had to catch herself there. So this was sounding more and more perverse (stupid hentai brain) as the conversation went on.
"What do you mean?"
"..Well we could have an anime marathon sleep over!" She grinned pulling out a bunch of anime dvds from somewhere unseen. So she had planned this all along?
"Arn't we a tad bit to old for sleep overs?" Chuckling Vanessa.
"Ahh come on! I know you wanna!" She wiggled the case she had in her hand back and forth. Again Vanessa was mently slapping herself and telling herself to keep the perverse thoughts in her mind, in a far corner there.

It wasn't the movies she wanted though and that was the problem.
"I don't think tonight will be good," Vanessa sighed mentally slapping herself again. She really did want to have an excuse to snuggle closer to the woman. To watch her sleep in her arms. To wake up every day next to her smiling face.

Shit. This really was full blown love. Wasn't it?!

"..Ok..." Candy said putting the movies in one of her bags she was carring sounding down. "Maybe we can do it another night or something."
"That'll be fine." Vanessa agreed. She never liked the sad down look on her face. "i just have much to do tonight to even think about anime."

That was semi true. Parts of her house did need to be cleaned up a bit before she'd even attempt to have Candy over.

Hell that would be one very bad and very stressful night to say the least.

"Well then I'll come over tomorrow and help get you all dolled up!" The woman exclaimed throwing a thumbs up in the mix for good measure and then walking away, while waving of course leaving Vanessa laughing a little, wondering how the hell she could have any feelings toward her.

Let alone love.

Ok so she was admiting it now but it still didn't change the fact that she needed to rid herself of these unneeded feelings.

Red eyes glanced at the busy humans rushing about on the street in front of him and of course the one almost dead one in his hands, fangs sunk into her neck as she tried to mumble a protest, but of course couldn't.

Stupid humans. All they were good for was to feed on, and maybe amusment.

Releasing the woman from his grasp, she fell to the alleyway floor with a dead thump as he strolled out to the masses wiping his lips with a cloth. Didn't need to freak any of them with visable blood. Hell, he was a superior race but if enough of them ganged up on him he would be overthrown. That he wasn't going to risk...yet..

Glancing around, hearing fragments of the thoughts the humans were thinking he smirked a little chuckling to himself. How petty and stupid they all really were. Most of them were thinking about what to buy or where they were going to get drunk that night since it was a shopping part of town.

But it really still amazed him how far humanity had come in such little time. It was like they took ten big giant steps back in evolution.

As Narsist walked calmly, and almost coldy, through the mass of shopping people (and the now growing crowd of club goers) he began to feel a slight dimming of his vampiric senses. Never had the vampire felt this at this time of night. Back when he had lived with his father (of course before he killed him) if he had stayed out to late during the night and the sun's rays were peaking over the hills as he rushed to his sancuary he had felt it before. With the coming of the sun vampiric powers always seemed to dim, even when one was as old has he and as strong.
But that wasn't the end of the oddness during that time of night. He began to feel a radiating heat, much like sun's rays once again, and it was coming from his left side. Even the hairs on his arms began to stand up.

Narsist had read something a long time ago about what was happening. It was a piece of parchment that his father had collected in the family library that had been suck in an old book.

It spoke of a time during a great peace through out the world about one of the people that needed to be elimated fully for his plans to take affect.

It was a person that if you killed, you would dim, or even destroy the sun.

The parchement was written by a very old Vampire who had incountered the person in question a few times and had wrote about it also stating that if the world was to be taken over by vampires that they would have to die..but there was one big old warning in his letter:

If the sun child was of purity no vampire could get near them. They radiated sun like heat and sun like waves (without the light of course) all the time, and was amplifed if the sun was risen, weither or not they were in sunlight directly.

The old vampire had made mention that the sun child had caused his arm to burst aflame and then a hundred or so years later when he came upon the child again, much changed, didn't cause any of the pain.

The parchment then stated that only when the child is impure (though he didn't write HOW to do that, just that it had happened, he had seen it and speculated that's what had happened) would be the time to take them out, before they somehow clense themselves.

So the reincarnated sunchild was near..and obviously pure enough to cause the side effects. Narsist was feeling sick standing there, looking in the crowd for someone, anyone who could be his mortal enemy.

..And that's when he saw her. She was brunette, with a pair of oval frames on her face, bending over trying to help a human who had spilled their bag full of needless stuff pick it up before it was ruined. He could tell it was her by the fact he couldn't really *look* at her. It hurt his eyes.

Rubbing them he glanced her way again trying to focus his mind reading ablilty on her.

After a few minutes a wicked smile spread across his bloodred lips.

The idea of Candy-chan always radating sun like waves was an idea of mine, adds a whole twist to the situation.

I hope you all enjoy this story and please do check out the original sprite comics I love! You'll at least understand a bit of where this story is coming from.
