Prologue

Kagome stopped at the bottom of the steps that led to her new school. She knew her mom had just wanted her to be happy, but even being so far away from the shrine, and the memories, wasn't enough to make her forget. Her mom sent her to America to stay with an old friend, hoping that being away would help Kagome recover. Kagome sighed, and closed her eyes as memories washed over her.

::Flashback::

Kagome and the others had finally, hopefully defeated Naraku. She didn't want to think about what would happen if he had somehow survived. They had defeated him, but at great cost to them, especially her.

In the final battle, all had been present. Inuyasha, Miroku, Sango, Kilala, Shippo, Kagome. Even Sesshomaru was there, for reasons unknown. Kouga had showed up right before Naraku did, saying that he wasn't going to trust the dogface to protect his woman. Kikyo was there as well, but not on either side, she was just waiting for a chance to take Inuyasha to hell with her.

Kagome had sent Shippo away, but unknown to her; he stayed and watched, not willing to leave his okaa-san. Inuyasha and Sesshomaru finally formed an alliance so that they could destroy Naraku once and for all. Miroku was fighting against the hordes of demons along with Sango and Kilala. He was at a disadvantage, however, because of the poison insects that made him unable to use his wind tunnel. Kouga had gone up against Kagura, threatening a slow and painful death for what she did to his brothers. Kagome had put herself in the middle, shooting arrows off left and right, but taking careful aim all the same. Every arrow that she let loose hit a target. Kanna was powerless as Kagome had shot several arrows at her mirror, shattering it and letting all the souls loose.

The battle wore on; the group was becoming dangerously injured and exhausted, while Naraku seemed to have endless strength. They never voiced their thoughts, but all of them were thinking that it was hopeless; they were just going to have to take as much as they can, and go down fighting. Suddenly, a chill passed through Kagome. She stiffened, as though listening for something. The jewel shards seemed to be calling to her, tugging her, telling her what she needed to do. She tensed up, and then sighed, looking around at her friends, whom she had grown so attached to, grown to love over the past year.

Her eyes changed subtly, going from a deep brown to a whitish pink. She stood tall, and started walking towards Naraku, towards her first love, and someone whom she wanted to be happy. Kouga lay on the ground panting, having finally killed Kagura. Too injured to move much, he struggled to get to Kagome. She knelt down next to him, sadness in her eyes. She placed her hands on his shoulders, healing him just enough so that he would be all right. She looked at him, and pulled him into a hug. She put her mouth next to his ear whispering something softly to him. He looked up, horror in his eyes, while she gave him a sad smile and instinctively called the jewel shards from his legs to her. They shot out of his legs, right into her palm, where she quickly fused them with hers. She then smiled sadly at him once more and turned to leave. He reached out for her, and got stopped by a barrier. He looked on in horror as the only one he wanted as a mate walked towards the enemy and an almost certain death.

Inuyasha was lying on the ground, nearly dead from his injuries. He fought to stand up and continue fighting while his brother, who was also injured, though not as badly, flew at Naraku, becoming a white blur that would stop and get thrown back every once in a while. Sango and Miroku watched in quiet horror as Kagome put her hand on Inuyasha's shoulder. She put a slow healing spell on him, making sure that he would be all right. He looked at her in shock, then reached to push her back, so she wouldn't be in harm's way. She placed a barrier similar to Kouga's around Inuyasha. He screamed and pounded his fists against the only thing that stood between him and the one he had come to love.

Sesshomaru, seeing the look in the miko's eye's, stepped back respectively, watching to see would this woman he had come to respect, as well as maybe something more, would do. Concern flashed through his eyes, but was quickly replaced with his stoic mask. She looked at him, and was about to say something, when a brown blur come running at her. She caught Shippo and hugged him. He had tears streaming down his face as he was screaming, begging his mommy not to leave him. She looked at him, her eyes glistening. She put her face next to his and whispered something to him. She then tapped him on the nose, sending him into a deep sleep. She handed him to Sesshomaru, who looked shocked. She looked at the man who had so often tried to kill her and told him to take care of her pup until she came back. He stared at her, breathing in her scent, which intoxicated him, this human woman who had found a way into his heart without even trying. He looked at her once more and nodded. He would take care of the pup, he would guard the little one with his life if need be, as he did with Rin.

He watched in wonder as the brave miko, turned, and looked at Kikyo, who was Inuyasha's first love, and always would be. Kikyo just stared back, not knowing what to make of this strange girl who was her reincarnation. Naraku choose that moment to attack Kagome, thinking she was distracted. Kagome simply turned to look at him, her eyes having gone to pure white. She put out a hand, power growing all the time. As Naraku closed in, she let out a burst of power, catching him directly in her unexpected attack. Naraku screamed, and tried to get away. Kagome twisted her hand so that her palm was facing up and called with all her might. The jewel shards come flying out of Naraku's body, being purified by Kagome. They fused together to make the complete Shikon No Tama. As Naraku suddenly disappeared, Kagome knew what she had to do.

With one last look at her true friends, who would always remain in her heart, she made her wish. As the Shikon No Tama burst into a blinding white light, Kagome fell into blackness. As she saw the concerned faces of her friends rushing to her side, she finally let go and settled into the peace of the darkness, content for the first time in a long time.

Her eyes felt heavy for some reason as she tried to open them. She groaned, hungrier then she had been in a long time. She heard someone move around, before finally managing to open her eyes. As her eyes adjusted to the light, she saw three worried faces hovering over her.
