[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
It was the day before the weekend officially started and Sango had been stressing, she was on edge because today was the day they posted who made the football team. After the incident on the first day of try-outs Ayame had been spending less and less time with her fellow cheerleaders and more time around Sango and Inuyasha. Sango didn’t mind really, all things considered Ayame was actually pretty decent compared to everyone else. But then Sango wondered why, on the surface she looked like everyone else, she wore same over priced nightmares that the rest of the world called fashion, and talked the same but her personality didn’t seem like that at all. Ayame had and story and curiosity had compelled Sango to find out what it was, and she had a plan. It was sixth period study hall and like usual Inuyasha was drawing in his sketch book, while Sango on the other hand was just sitting under the tree getting in some well deserved relaxation after the week she had.

“ Hey Inu?”

“ Hmm?” He said glancing up quickly then back down at his sketch pad.

“ Have you seen Kohaku?”

“ He’s interviewing the jocks today.” He stated beginning to draw slightly faster.

“ Cool.” She said about to stand up.

“ Hold it.” He said clearly annoyed.

“ What the fuck is your problem lately? This whole week whenever I try to stand up during study hall you snap at me!”

Inuyasha looked up at her and let out a huge sigh when suddenly it clicked in her brain, she felt stupid that she didn’t realize it sooner.

“ Oh, you were drawing me.”

“ Yes.”

“ Why didn’t you say so?”

“ I don’t know.” He said as Sango took her seat back under the tree.

In reality Inuyasha didn’t want Sango to know, it was a project for his Art class, it was due at the end of the year as a final project but Inuyasha liked to get things done early so he wouldn’t have to worry about it later, besides his AP classes were easier than he thought so he had a bit of free time. His project was to find something or someone that means a lot to him and turn it into a masterpiece. That’s all his art teacher would say, he personally thought she was a nut job but he did like the assignment. He remembered thinking about that first day, and he knew right away he’d draw Sango, she was his sister, his best friend, and he didn’t know where he’d be without her. Part of him was a little embarrassed about the whole thing and the other was really excited but in the end he decided to leave Sango in the dark about the assignment and surprise her at the end of the year.

“ Yes, you do, you just don’t want to tell me.” she said with a grin “ It’s okay though.”

“ Hey guys!” Said Ayame walking over with her usual chipper demeanor.

“ Hey,” Sango started ready to put her plan into action “ Ayame, could you get Kohaku for me? I have to tell him something important.”

“ Sure,” She said as she ran over to get Kohaku.

“ What are you up to?” Inuyasha asked her looking her straight in the eye.

“ I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“ Yes, you do.”

“ You’ll find out soon enough.”

Inuyasha raised an eyebrow at her just as Ayame came back with Kohaku and his camera crew.

“ What’s up sis? I’ve still got more work to do.”

“ I know,” she started “ I got you a good subject.”

“ Who?” Asked Kohaku as Souten and Kanna exchanged glances.

“ Ayame.”

“ What?” Ayame said startled while turning bright red “ I- Me?”

“ Sure, why not?” Sango asked her while Kohaku gave her a look.

“ I- I guess I could.”

“ Great! Go on Ko-chan!” Sango said knowing she just embarrassed her brother with his nickname.

“ Aight, and don’t call me that!”

Inuyasha glanced at Sango then Kohaku then Ayame, feeling pretty confused.

“ What the hell would interviewing Ayame do?” Inuyasha thought while watching them.

“ Okay, Sango go sit next to Inuyasha so Ayame could sit there, it’ll be a good interviewing spot.”

“ Okay.” Sango said getting up and sitting down next to Inuyasha.

Sango almost laughed as she saw his expression, she gave him a look then turned to watch Kohaku set up for the interview. She was really proud of the fact that Kohaku had really put a lot of effort into making the documentary, last time she found him in his room already editing footage. It made her laugh to imagine him being a big director bossing people around but now that she was really seeing him in action, it actually suited him very well.

“ Alright, here we go,” he said pointing his camera at a now nervous looking Ayame “ Ready?”

“ Yes.” She said simply.

Kohaku signaled to Souten, then to Kanna then said “ Action.” and clicked on the camera, after Kohaku thought he got some good head shots he proceeded with the interview question.

“ Tell me who you really are?”

“ What do mean?” She asked him back.

“ Let me know Ayame, tell me about your life, about school, about your friends. Gimme something.”

“ Okay.” She said as she began to talk about her life.

Sango listened very closely as she spoke, Ayame started telling about her hobbies, interests, and friends but when she started going into how her life was Sango found herself unable to ignore it. She began to tell about how she came to Yakamoto High school last year after she came to live with her grandfather. Her parents died when she was a baby and began to get passed around throughout her family. At first she stayed with her Aunt and Uncle then her father’s cousins over in the U.S. She began to tell about how much she loved living in New York, and how the kids there were really cool, but then they gave her to her father’s parents, and how that didn’t last long and finally when that didn’t work out she moved in with her mother’s father. She began to tell how awful everything was whenever she had to move.

“ It felt like no one wanted me, like I was just a bother on them. Whenever I would move, I would always ask why? Why do I have to leave? They never answered me, none of them. I'd always wonder why? Am I not good enough for them? Do I not fit in with their family? Was I bad? Did they just hate me? I hated not knowing, and so I always felt like I wasn’t good enough for any of them, that I was this horrible person for wanting things I just couldn’t have.”

Inuyasha stared at Ayame with this look on his face, Sango glanced at him then back at her, she knew why he had that look. He felt the same way, although Inuyasha would never admit it but she knew, she knew him better then he knew himself. She knew Inuyasha felt that no one wanted him, that he was worthless. It hurt him more than he would ever admit that his brother rejected him, that Kikyo betrayed him, that he was moved around in foster homes far more than Sango and Kohaku were, and she knew that he missed his parents because he needed to be loved. So, he began to do better in school, a lot better, he pushed himself farther than he wanted to be perfect but when he still was moved around it hurt even that much more. As Ayame continued to speak, Sango began to remember that time Inuyasha almost killed himself. It was one of the most horrible nights of her life, and as she remembered she could feel the air around her getting hotter. Those memories of the days when everything was wrong, back when Kohaku almost got caught up in a gang, when she found out Inuyasha suffered from depression, when she cut herself to find some kind of escape. Suddenly, the world begin to shrink and she could feel her heartbeat in her ears. As Ayame spoke she began to remember those nights when she’d lock herself in the bathroom trying to find that release from the pain she felt inside her everyday of her life.

“ When I finally came to this school I felt like an outcast, I didn’t fit in at all. I didn’t want to be shunned, I wanted to be accepted, I wanted people to like me. I wanted people to want me around, so I changed the way I dressed, acted, I changed the person I was because I thought no one would like the real me. No one wanted to know the real me, I didn’t want to be rejected anymore. I wanted someone, anyone, to love me, and accept me. This school was nothing like the school I went to in New York. I found people like me, who wanted to be liked. I miss them all the time, I just wish that things weren’t so complicated like that. I wish that accident didn’t happened because then maybe I would have parents that loved me for me.”

Suddenly, Sango heard that screaming in her ears, all those flashbacks came flooding back all at once. But the one that stuck out in her mind the most was that night she saw Inuyasha standing in the park with a gun in his hand. She could still hear the screams of what happened that night echoing through her mind.

“ INUYASHA!!! NO!!!”

“ Leave me alone Sango.”

“ NO!!! YOU CAN’T DO THIS!! STOP BEING SO GOD DAMN SELFISH!!”

“ What?”

“ Why would leave us? Why? We need you Inuyasha. Don’t leave us, please.”

She didn’t want him to leave her, maybe that made her selfish and to Sango it did. But at that moment she didn’t care. Him and Kohaku were the only family she had, she wouldn’t know what she would do if something happened to the both of them. But that’s all it took for him not to go through with it, just someone telling him they needed him. Sango always thought the only reason he didn’t do it again was for her and Kohaku, but she knew he was worth way more than he thought he was. Inuyasha had saved her, she wanted more than anything to save him. She saved him from killing himself that night, but she hadn’t stopped him from dying inside. But then she thought maybe she wouldn’t be the one to do it. Sango always remember how much pain she was in, how Inuyasha would always be there, he’d always go out of his way to make sure she was okay, to help in anyway he could, she remembered how he looked for her that time she ran away from her foster home even though he lived two towns away. He made the world bearable, he helped get Kohaku away from gangs, it was because of him that she stopped cutting. She wished there was something she could do to help him. Inuyasha glanced at Sango who looked like she was going to have a heart attack then back at Ayame and almost paled. He knew Sango was thinking back on everything they went through, and Ayame had effected him as well in an understanding he’d never admit, but he knew that Sango knew and that she was getting upset by it. When Ayame was finally finished, and Kohaku stopped recording, a strange silence falling over them and Sango wanted nothing more than to get away. Suddenly, the bell rang and Sango jumped up almost immediately, running as fast as she could.

“ Sango!” Inuyasha yelled quickly stuffing his sketch pad in his bag and running after her.

Ayame looked up at Kohaku then to Souten and Kanna and asked “ What just happened?”

“ More than you’ll ever know.” Kohaku answered as he gather his equipment and walked away leaving a confused and emotionally exhausted Ayame behind.
