CHAPTER 12

Sango sighed in disgust as she lay reclined in her bed. She was not in bed in midafternoon because she wanted to be there. Oh no. It was because her over protective court and younger brother wouldn't even let her sit up without supervision!

It had been five days now since the attack on the village, where she had been fatally wounded by that cursed bandit and then miraculously healed. Four days since Miroku had returned to the village only to hear the news of what had happened and rushed over as fast as if he was being hunted by Koga's wolves. Since the attack she had been waited on hand and foot, sunup till sundown and beyond, and not been allowed to do anything on her own beyond sit quietly. At first Sango had been willing to go along with it. She had been so shocked by what had happened, and had seen how worried her brother and Miroku were about what had nearly happened to her. So, she had been willing to go along when the two most important men in her life insisted that she take it easy for a while. She had put up with being confined to bed and having them take care of her for a while, knowing that they were only fussing because they both loved her. But after three days of this, Sango's patience had started to run thin and at five days she was all out.

Sango was not the type of woman who enjoyed being waited on hand and foot, never had been. She was an active, independent woman who refused to settle into the expected role for a female in their society. She had been happily living alone and taking care of herself for years. She had her own job, a very unwomanly job at that, and did not depend on a father or husband to pay her bills for her. Facts that she was very proud of. In fact, the main reason she had allowed Miroku to start courting her in the first place was because he continued to allow her to do just that, and in fact seemed to respect her for it. Most men would look down on her for working and being unmarried at her age. Miroku might be a letch at times, but he was also the only man in town who seemed to truly respect her individuality and not try to force her into the mould of what society deemed important for a woman. She wanted to get back out there, start looking after herself again and especially get back to work. After all, if the attack had proved anything in Sango's mind, it was that despite having a God as a resident, the town still needed guardsmen and women to keep it safe. She didn't feel right staying in bed all day while she knew her fellow guard were already back on duty and had been for days.

It wasn't just her own annoyance at being kept in bed that was bothering Sango either. She was starting to feel rather guilty about keeping Miroku and Kohaku at her house all day when she was sure they were needed back up at the temple. It was Inuyasha who actually defeated the bandits after all, and Miroku and Kohaku were his priests. She couldn't help but feel that they should be working to repay their God and fulfilling their own duties by now, duties they had been neglecting for days in order to take care of her. The fact that they had been reassuring her that the temple was currently closed to visitors anyway wasn't actually very reassuring to Sango. The whole reason the temple was closed was because they were currently having a lack of manpower, what with Miroku and Kohaku looking after her, Kikyo expelled from the temple (oh, how she wished she had been awake for that, from Kohaku's description it must have been glorious), and Kagome still trying to regain her strength.

Kagome. Another reason she really wanted to get back on her feet, to see how her friend was going. Miroku returned to the temple every night (Sango drew the line at him sleeping in her home when they weren't married) and returned the next morning with news of Kagome's progress. According to Miroku Kagome was expected to be good enough to get back to work by tomorrow, but Sango really wanted to see her for herself. Kagome had saved her life and the lives of so many other villagers. Sango wanted to thank her for that, and see how she was doing with her own eyes.

Besides, there was another reason Sango really wanted to see Kagome. Kikyo's accusation, which had been repeated to Sango by a rather angry Kohaku, had been replaying in Sango's head for the last five days and she couldn't help but wonder if they were true. Not about the part where Kagome faked her show of power, hell she knew first hand that that was a joke. No, what Sango really wanted to know was whether or not Kagome was sleeping with Inuyasha.

Sango wasn't blind, she had seen the way Kagome's eyes would light up when talking about or too the God of Protection even if no one else seemed to have noticed it yet. Maybe it was because she knew the girl so well, maybe it was because she knew first hand about somewhat unconventional relationships and feelings. Whatever it was that allowed her to see it, Sango knew that Kagome was in love with Inuyasha and had been for some time. This left Sango with a very big question. Did Kikyo also notice the way Kagome felt about Inuyasha and with her already believing Kagome to be a whore just assume the two were sleeping together? Or was Kikyo actually right and had her friend really been sharing her bed with their God? Sango didn't know, and didn't expect to find out any time soon. Even if it was true, Sango knew that if Kagome had kept it a secret until now there was a good reason and would no doubt want to keep it a secret for a while yet, especially after the scene Kikyo had caused the other day. If Sango asked her about it, no doubt Kagome would become embarrassed and deny everything, and Sango might very destroy their friendship in the process.

Still it was a question that had been plaguing Sango for some time now, and Sango was sure would continue to do so until a definitive answer was given one-way or the other. It also didn't help that from what Kohaku had told her, Inuyasha had not actually said whether or not he and Kagome were sleeping together. The villagers as a whole might have taken Inuyasha's words as a denial, but Sango wasn't so sure. Once again her unconventional way of thinking was coming into play, but from Sango's point of view `she is not a whore' and `we are not sleeping together' weren't the same thing.

Sango sighed again, deciding that this path of thinking wasn't getting her anywhere right now. She debated getting up again when she heard the sound of her brother and court coming from her small kitchen and couldn't help but smile. Apparently the two were having trouble cooking, again. She couldn't help but chuckle slightly as their distress over the food refusing to cooperate with them got louder. This wasn't the first time Sango had heard her boys panicking over their cooking, and each time just seemed to be more amusing that the last. To make things even better, those times when they messed up too badly, which was more often than not, instead of subjecting her to their horrible cooking they would instead go and get something from the village inn for their meal. The cooks at the village inn her much better cooks than she'd ever be, and she believed that they would be cooking her favourite tonight.

`Okay.' Sango decided. `I'll stay in bed one more day, but tomorrow I'm going back to work and those two are going back to the temple. Even if I have to chase them all the way there with Hiraikotsu!'

Inuyasha couldn't help but smirk slightly as the woman below him moaned with pleasure in time to his thrusts. He had already brought her to her peak twice so far, once with his tongue and once in the more traditional way, and was determined to do so at least once more before reaching his own climax. This was the first time the two of them had been together since the attack on the village, and worried that Kagome might not yet be back to full strength Inuyasha was being as gentle with her as he had the very first time they were together. Wanting to increase his love's pleasure, Inuyasha reached down to rub at her nub while continuing to move within her. Already close to her climax, this was enough to push Kagome over the edge a few trusts later. With a howl of victory, Inuyasha quickly followed himself and collapsed on top of his partner as, not for the first time, he silently thanked the long dead construction workers who had build the temple for their fantastic job on sound proofing his room.

Kagome was in a state of pure bliss as she lay underneath her God and lover in the wake of their combined climaxes. She was so lucky to have such a man as him as her first and hopefully only. Although her family had not arranged a marriage for her, as was custom in their land, her mother had taken the time years ago to explain a wife's duties to her daughter, including those in the bedroom. As such Kagome knew that there were many men out there who did not care so much if their partner was satisfied as long as they themselves were. This had never been a problem with her and Inuyasha though, as he had always ensured that she had reached her peak, often several times over, before he allowed himself to reach his own. The fact that Inuyasha had admitted to her weeks ago that she was by far not his first lover did not bother her, as she knew that she was his first love and that meant far more to her. And besides he had also sworn that he would not take another while she was with him, so whatever had happened in his past he was all hers now.

Kagome was almost disappointed when she felt Inuyasha pull out of her, before rolling onto his back at her side. Wanting to remain in contact with him she scooted over herself, enough that she could use his chest as a pillow. As she snuggled into his side, she couldn't help but let out a yawn as her body reminded her how late it was and that she had been recovering from her massive display of power for the last few days.

Inuyasha smiled as he realised that Kagome was falling asleep on him. He wasn't surprised; he had known that she wasn't completely back to full strength despite her claims to the contrary. In fact he was surprised she had been feeling strong enough to engage in their activities that night, although he was more than happy about being proven wrong in that regard.

Inuyasha hadn't been planning on doing anything with Kagome tonight. In fact, he had been expecting that she would not be feeling up to mating with him for several more days, and had been completely willing to go along with that. But when she had turned up at the door to his room tonight an hour after the rest of the temple staff had gone to sleep, claiming that she wanted to be with him once again, he would admit that it hadn't taken all that much convincing on his part. It was the first time Kagome had actually come to him. In the past Inuyasha would always be the one who made the first move. He had never pushed, but Kagome was until now too shy about their relationship to initiate their encounters herself. She had also often been worried about people seeing her with him, which after what Kikyo had said the other day may not have been as unreasonable fear as Inuyasha had first thought. However when Inuyasha had asked her about that tonight, Kagome had simply stated that she was sure that everyone else was asleep and not likely to wake up for several hours. Inuyasha had not doubted her, as he knew that on top of the other powers his Kagome had displayed during the attack, Kagome had also become much more aware of the world around her, and had been instinctively aware of what others in the temple had been doing for days even when she could not see them. This kind of power was not overly common with those with spiritual powers, and neither Kaede nor Miroku possessed it, but it was hardly rare either. Inuyasha had been very pleased when he discovered Kagome had such a power at her disposal as well, as it would help keep her safe by informing her of danger before it hit her, and being a passive power would not drain her strength as her other powers did.

Kagome had been unable to train with Kaede to better develop her powers so far. The fact that Kagome was still so weak was troubling to both the old priestess and Inuyasha, although they would also admit that it was not altogether surprising considering the huge display Kagome had put on five days ago was about equal to what an average spiritually powerful priestess might use in a year. Today had been the best Kagome had been feeling in days, and she had asked earlier about maybe being trained today, but Inuyasha had convinced Kaede to hold off the training for one more day in favour of seeing how Kagome was feeling tomorrow. Instead Kagome had spent the day help Kaede and Hojo prepare the temple for when visitors would be once again allowed in. Kagome had been somewhat annoyed by this, as she didn't like being cuddled too much (unless by Inuyasha while they lay together in bed, but that was a whole other story), but Inuyasha would be damned before he allowed his precious Kagome to risk relapsing by pushing herself too far when he wasn't convinced she was truly recovered yet.

Besides, it wasn't like there wasn't plenty to do around the temple anyway. With Kikyo gone, Kagome on bed rest, and the rest of the temple staff devoting so much of their time looking after either Kagome or Sango, the temple was falling into something of disarray, even without visitors. Nothing a good solid cleaning wouldn't fix, true, but there was still quite a bit of work that needed to be done before the temple would be open again. Inuyasha hoped that Miroku and Kohaku would be back to help with that soon, as with the temple staff once again back down to five he really couldn't afford for it to remain at three for too long. Not that it was likely those two would be gone for much longer, Inuyasha thought with a smirk. If Kagome disliked being waited on, it was nothing compared to Sango. He was sure that the guardswoman would force his priests to leave her alone and get back to work before too much longer.

Hopefully his temple staff would all be back at work soon, and life at the temple would go on. Once it did, Inuyasha knew that things were no doubt going to change. Kagome would have to get training in using her spiritual powers from Kaede and possibly Miroku as well. He wondered how Kagome would do with that, and how much that would affect her learning herbal lore as well. Knowing her, she'd somehow be able to manage it, Inuyasha never failed to be amazed at how much Kagome could do when she set her mind too it. They were likely to see an increase in visitors to the temple as well, Inuyasha knew, as news of Kagome's power was already becoming something of a legend around these parts and already there was some talk of people wanting to see such a powerful priestess as well as the God who would defend his people from bandits with his own hands. And, of course, there was the little matter of once again having a priestess position to fill. No doubt he would soon be getting swarms of hopeful applicants arriving. Remembering the drama that he went through and all the wannabe priestess's he had to reject last time made Inuyasha cringe. He really, really hoped things would go better this time round, but he wasn't counting on it.

Glancing over at the angel by his side, Inuyasha smiled as he realised that Kagome was by now truly asleep. Knowing that even gods needed sleep at times, and that it was likely that he would be almost as busy as his priests once the temple reopened, Inuyasha decided that Kagome might have the right idea, and settled himself down to join her in the land of nod.

Things were currently quiet in the Realm of the Gods. Tsukuyomaru was currently doing his duty, watching over the earth while it was clouded in the darkness of night, while most of the other Gods either used this time to get some sleep or reflect on the events of the day and what needed to be done tomorrow.

However, in the private chambers of Taisho and Izayoi, three gods were still very much awake and busy discussing something which was very important yet unknown to any besides them.

“Things are moving along as I have foreseen.” Kanna said, even more softly than usual. Kanna always spoke softly, but she always did doubly so when talking about one of her visions. “The dark priestess is gone, and the priestess of light remains. They are growing ever closer to each and to their destiny should they prove worthy of it.”

“Are you getting any clearer on the outcome?” Taisho asked, his voice slightly worried. A lot was riding on this after all.

“Alas, no I cannot.” Kanna said. “It is still unclear. There is potential there, but I still sense that an unforseen danger stands between them and their ultimate destiny. It is up to them to overcome it, for if they do not all will fail.”

“Are you sure we can't help him?” Izayoi asked for what had to be the thousandth time. “Maybe if we warn Inuyasha, he can…”

“I'm afraid not my Queen.” Kanna said. “We may not interfere at this time, least we doom them by interfering with what is their's alone to complete. Until the time is right and he comes to us, we must not let them know of the prophecy, and I sense that much must still happen before that time not all of it good. And even when that time comes we still may only advise, so is the will of destiny.”

Izayoi bit her lip. She had known Kanna would say that of course, she always said that, but that did not mean that Izayoi liked it. Inuyasha may be six hundred years old but he was still her baby and she hated to think of him struggling with what Kanna had told her was to come.

“Fear not my Queen.” Kanna said gently, reassuringly. “Your son is strong, one of the strongest of the Gods both in body and in spirit. If any of us can overcome what fate has in store, it will be Inuyasha.”

AUTHOR'S NOTES

Yay, I finished the chapter. I'm not completely happy with this chapter, but lets see what you think. I'm going to try to slow the story down somewhat from this point on, as my first few chapters seem to make some pretty big jumps over things and I want to stop that. I'm also going to try to bring more of other characters into the story from this point on and stop focusing almost solely on Inuyasha, Kagome and Kikyo (especially since Kikyo should be gone for the next few chapters at least).
