Chapter 1: InuYasha Makes Decision

This time he had really done it. After trying to convince Kagome that he wanted her to stay by his side, he'd gone running to Kikyou - again. He had planned on it being innocent. He wanted to tell her he couldn't go to hell with her. But instead, he stood there like a baka as Kikyou once again put her arms around him and kissed him. He did not kiss her back. He had finally realized that he did not love her that way; at least not any more. He stood there paralyzed on the spot and did not even hold her, but he didn't move away from her either. Still, it did not undo the hurt that he had put Kagome through once again. She had followed him and witnessed enough to send her running. In five minutes time he had effectively fucked up any progress he had made with the young miko from five hundred years in the future.

It had taken InuYasha a long time to realize it; the poor hanyou had really been confused. He had been willing to turn human for Kikyou fifty years ago because he was so tired of being alone. For his entire life he had been shunned by humans and demons alike. Both trying to kill him whenever they had the opportunity. As a result, InuYasha trusted no one, and once strong enough he killed his attackers without question. If he would not be accepted, then he would survive through intimidation and fear. But after his encounters with Kikyou, InuYasha thought he had finally found someone who loved him, and whom he loved back.

He should have known it was too fucking good to be true. InuYasha was half inu-youkai, half human. The miko Kikyou found his demon half simply unacceptable. She would never love him for who he truly was. The only physical contact they had while alive was one time when she stumbled into him after getting out of a boat and he caught her and held her. While he was almost always near her, he never had the type of closeness that he had developed with Kagome. In fact when he thought about it, he never really trusted Kikyou. He had never even shared his human night with her.

InuYasha wondered how he could have been such a baka when it came to Kikyou. It should have been clear as soon as Urasue revived Kikyou and she tried to kill him on the spot. Not just once this happened, but twice. Even after Kagome had tried to explain to Kikyou that she and InuYasha had been deceived and that Naraku was the real villain; Kikyou had still tried to drag him to hell with her. On top of that, she made Kagome watch. If it had not been for Kagome, she would have succeeded since InuYasha had no say in the matter. For he had been unconscious at the time, thanks to Kikyou. It wasn't long afterwards that Kikyou actually tried to kill Kagome and successfully took her jewel shards in order to hand them over to Naraku. They gave him so much power that he started creating incarnations of himself and became incredibly more difficult to defeat.

Then there were the other things InuYasha had started to ponder. For instance why had he not really died when Kikyou shot him with her arrow (when everything else she shot did)? Why had he been sealed to the tree where he could not die, nor could he live? Was he supposed to be cast into nothingness, alone, for fucking eternity? Was Kikyou really that angry and bitter? On top of that, InuYasha had finally been brave enough to ask old Kaede what would happen to Kikyou when she did die - how would her soul go to hell with him if it really belonged to Kagome? He didn't really realize when that little piece of information came to him, but once again it appeared that Kikyou was trying to find a way to punish him by making him spend eternity alone. Kaede had confirmed that once Kikyou “died” again, her piece of soul that was stolen from Kagome would in fact return to Kagome, and InuYasha would be in hell all alone.

All in all, it did not look like Kikyou had InuYasha's best interests at heart. In fact, it looked like she was being a totally vindictive bitch and still trying to punish him for something that was not really his fault. He had forgiven her for pinning him to the tree once he had found out the real culprit was Naraku. Why was she not able to do the same? An ill-tempered hanyou showing more compassion than a priestess? What's wrong with this picture?

She's like the wind through my tree,
She rides the night next to me
She leads me through moonlight
Only to burn me with the sun
She's taken my heart
But she doesn't know what she's done

Kagome though, she wasn't anything like Kikyou. She might be Kikyou's reincarnation, but it was kind of hard to believe. If it had not been for the combination of Kagome freeing him from the tree and the Shikon jewel popping out of her body, InuYasha would never have believed it. She was so different. Where Kikyou was cold and calculating even in life. Kagome was warm and full of laughter. Her eyes had so much life and she had such a big heart (too big - InuYasha wished she wouldn't be so nice to that filthy ookami Koga).

Kagome had freed InuYasha from the arrow that bound him to the tree; something that was not supposed to ever happen. She made him feel peaceful and soothed his soul in a manner that Kikyou had never achieved. When they encountered the Spiderheads on that first moonless night as they traveled together when InuYasha turned mortal, not only had Kagome not abandoned him when she found out his weakness, she had saved him and then helped to protect him on those nights ever since. She had cried for him when she thought she would lose him to the Spiderhead's poison; no one had shed tears for him since his mother had died. Little by little, she had chipped away at the wall he had erected around his heart. Because of Kagome, he had her as a friend as well as Sango, Miroku, Shippou and even Kirara. It was all because of Kagome that his life had completely changed and he finally felt like he had a purpose. Gathering the jewel shards was just a good excuse to be with her.

Kagome tried to make it clear that she liked him the way he was. No, it was more than that. When Kagome saved him from Kaguya she told InuYasha she loved him as a hanyou before she kissed him. She was able to reverse the spell that was removing his human soul to lock it in the mirror in order to turn him into a full-fledged youkai. Not the kind of full youkai like his brother Sesshomaru, but a violent, non-stop, killing machine that would not have recognized himself, much less his friends who had helped him so many times. Kagome had done that alone. Brave and foolish, she had clung to him and brought InuYasha back to his sanity even though the others were trying to tell her to stay away.

He was really kind of irate that Miroku had to go and ruin the entire thing. After they had escaped Miroku just HAD to try and kiss Sango using the excuse that since Kagome and InuYasha had done it, they should too. Kagome instantly went into denial mode by covering her ears and saying that she couldn't hear them. Then, InuYasha had to stick his foot in his mouth once again by saying he didn't really want to; Kagome had jumped on him. In truth, he did enjoy it. InuYasha had kissed her back and held her with good reason, but he was too afraid to let her know.

Kagome also seemed to like the things about him that set him apart from others and made it clear InuYasha was a hanyou. He had the hardest time keeping her hands off of his ears (even her mother liked them). InuYasha actually enjoyed it, but only when Kagome touched them (though he would never admit that to anyone).

She wasn't the least bit afraid of his fangs and claws, even though they could easily shred her. Kagome also seemed to love riding on his back, even when he was leaping from tree to tree and practically flying. She would clutch his torso with her legs, and shoulders with her hands, and often laugh as they raced through the treetops. She seemed to have no fear when she was with him - unlike the vast majority of people that reeked of the smell of fear just at the sight of him.

Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind

Still, just because Kagome said she loved him did not mean she was in love with him. It took InuYasha a long time to understand that concept when he would hear humans speak in those terms. For himself, he knew that he did love Kikyou fifty years ago. He was actually willing to become human for her in order to stay with her and no longer be alone.

However, InuYasha had started to realize that he was probably truly in love with Kagome. He needed her like he needed air to breathe. InuYasha was stronger when she was at his side. He was happy when she was with him. When she went home for her tests, even if only for a few days, he had an unexplainable sense of loss. He would never stray far from the Well or the Goshinboku so he would be nearby when she returned. When he became too anxious, he simply made up an excuse and went after her. While InuYasha may have blamed it on Shippou, Sango, or even Kaede, he went because he wanted to, and no one else.

InuYasha was often glad that he was the only other one that could travel through the well. It was the only time he could see her without interference and smart remarks from the perverted monk or Shippou. So, while InuYasha was pretty certain that he was in love with Kagome, he didn't really know if she felt the same way about him.

Others had tried to hint that she did, but he was so afraid of her rejection that he had been terrified of letting her know how he felt. After all, InuYasha had been told his entire life that he was a filthy hanyou, that he should have never been born or at the very least killed upon his birth. His half-brother Sesshomaru had blamed him for the death of their father because he fell in love with a human and died protecting her. His mother's family blamed InuYasha for her death because she had fallen in love with a demon and bore him a son. Demons in general wanted him dead because his blood was tainted with human blood, and humans wanted him dead because he was tainted with demon blood. It did not seem to matter what he did or where he went, he was accepted by no one - until Kagome.

Not once had she ever asked him to change who or what he was (with the exception of yelling at him or even sitting him to make him quit calling her bitch or wench). But what did he actually have to offer her? All he owned was the robe made of the firerat fur that his mother left him, and his Tetsusaiga from his father (though he actually had to put some work into it to acquire the sword, and in the end retrieved it because of Kagome). InuYasha owned no land, and only knew how to fight. He loved her like no other and would battle to the death to defend her, but would that be enough?

InuYasha was so afraid of rejection that he thought it would be easier to go on in silence than to tell her how he felt. However, that was not working real well, either. Every time she would start to get too close, he would either do or say something stupid to push her away. It usually worked, too. She would yell SIT at him (the number of times depending on how mad she was) and then storm off. If she was close enough, or Kirara was available, Kagome would storm all the way home to five hundred years in the future. On those occasions he usually had to suck up his pride and go after her. Somehow she seemed to understand that he was sorry even though he couldn't spit out the words and would come back with him.

Which leads back to his current problem. For once InuYasha wished Kagome had stayed right where she was and witnessed the rest of the “affair” with Kikyou before running off. He even wished that the often spying monk had been there as a witness, but he couldn't smell him anywhere nearby.

As soon as InuYasha had come to his senses, he told Kikyou to get the fuck away from him and that he was not going ANYWHERE with her, especially to hell. He then proceeded to tell Kikyou that she was a cold-hearted bitch who had never loved and appreciated him the way that Kagome did. InuYasha said that he could not believe the Kikyou that he had loved fifty years ago was in that cold clay body at all. At least he hoped she had not been as cruel in life as she was in death.

He continued his tirade by telling her that Kagome was NOT a poor copy; she was MUCH fucking better than the original. Maybe Kagome had not been trained to use her powers the way Kikyou had. The hanyou had come to realize that it was a fucking blessing in disguise since Kagome had not also been automatically trained to hate and slay demons just for existing since they weren't ALL bad.

InuYasha made it very clear to Kikyo that she was not to come near either him or Kagome again unless she had some valid news regarding Naraku. And then, he would come only if Kagome or one of the others accompanied him. Needless to say, Kikyou was a bit stunned. While she did not necessarily expect InuYasha to go happily with her, she didn't expect this reaction at all. InuYasha did not even say good-bye when he was finished. He just gave her a glare that gave new meaning to “if looks could kill” and tore off after Kagome.

I look in the mirror and all I see
Is a young old man with only a dream
Am I just fooling myself
That she'll stop the pain
Living without her
I'd go insane

InuYasha practically flew after Kagome. As he had expected, she had gone home through the well. Without any hesitation, he jumped in to go after her. When he jumped out five hundred years in the future in the shrine well house, he stopped to calm down and try to formulate what he was going to say. He really didn't want to fuck up this time. He had finally managed to tell Kikyou exactly how he felt, so he needed to do the same for Kagome.

As expected, she was alone in her bedroom stretched out on her stomach on the bed with her face in her pillow. He could smell the salt of her tears from outside. He jumped softly to the roof and went quietly through her window.

“Kagome…”

Kagome sat up on her bed and faced him.

“InuYasha - why are you here? You went with Kikyou…”

InuYasha sat down next to her with his ears flattened on his head, and looked at the floor. He was afraid to face her directly in case she rejected him when he was through telling her everything.

“Kagome, for once I need to you stay quiet and listen. Let me finish before I fuck up what I'm trying to say. You left too soon. For once I wish you had actually stayed and listened to what I told Kikyou, but you jumped to the wrong conclusion and took off - again. I fucked up when I thought I could go alone to tell Kikyou I have no intention of going to hell with her. I will still kill Naraku to avenge her death fifty years ago, but that is all I owe her now.”

InuYasha then proceeded to tell Kagome exactly what had happened and what he told Kikyou after Kagome had fled. Kagome's eyes got bigger and bigger until they filled her entire face - she could not believe the words InuYasha were retelling to her. For once, her complete shock kept her mouth shut so she didn't interrupt. InuYasha was grateful because he did not know if he could continue if she stopped and questioned him in the middle of his story. Silent tears started to fall again from her eyes when he reached the part where he told Kikyou that he thought Kagome was MUCH fucking better than the original.

Kagome made a soft gasp, and looked at InuYasha.

“InuYasha, did you mean it? Did you really mean what you told Kikyou?”

InuYasha turned to face Kagome, so she could see his eyes.

“Yes, I also meant the part where I told her that I would never go see her alone again. While I finally understand that I do not love her anymore, I know I can become a complete baka when she comes around and does something I didn't expect, like when she kissed me tonight. Either you will go with me, or Sango or Miroku. I never want to be in that situation again.”

“Kagome, that's not all. I finally realized that there is something I have to let you know. I keep pushing you away, but it is tearing me apart. I thought it was for the best, but I'm not so sure any more. I told you a long time ago that I feel at happy and at peace with you, you soothe my soul. You make me stronger when you are with me. But that's not all, I need you, like I need air. I can't fucking breath if you are not with me. I don't know how I would survive if I lost you. I understand if you do not feel the same way about me, but Kagome, will you still stay with me, stay by my side?”

Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind

Kagome sat on her bed with tears streaming down her face. She knew it had taken a lot for him to say everything that he had said, both the first time to Kikyou and then again to her. At this point she launched herself into his arms and wrapped her arms around his body.

“InuYasha, thank you. I will stay with you...I…I love you and have probably since I first saw you pinned to the tree. I thought you would go with Kikyou and that there was no room for me in your heart. I've always run because I couldn't stand for my heart to be crushed again, but I keep coming back because it hurts too much to stay away. I feel safe with you, and I feel complete with you. I don't know how I would survive without you.”

InuYasha held her in his lap with his arms surrounding her and his chin resting on her head as he breathed in the scent of her hair - he did not know for how long. He finally got up enough nerve to place his hand under her chin and tilt her head up, and gently kissed her. Kagome willingly complied, parting her lips and inviting his tongue to explore her mouth. After a gentle but passionate battle of tongues, they finally pulled apart for air. As InuYasha wrapped his arms completely around her and drew her in as close to his body as he could, he whispered “Thank you, Kagome.” He also thanked Kami that the monk, demon slayer, and kitsune weren't around to ruin it this time. He had no intention of taking back anything he had said tonight.

I feel your breath on my face
Your body close to me
Can't look in your eyes
Your out of my league
Just a fool to believe
She's like the wind
She's like the wind
