Chapter 10 – Back at Kaede’s

Even though they had managed to handle the oni alright, everyone knew, should their opponent have been a higher level youkai, they could have all been in a lot of trouble. So, it was unanimously decided that they would return to Kaede’s village until her potion was ready, and they changed back.

Kagome and Inuyasha were both getting tired of their friends, though they knew they meant well, or at least, Sango did. But with the way she kept looking at her, and with the way Kagome’s nose was telling her that Sango was feeling sympathy, no, make that pity, yes, Sango was pitying her, and she didn’t need that.Miroku didn’t pity Inuyasha, but wouldn’t stop teasing him. Once, he even had the balls to ask Inuyasha if he could touch one of ‘his’ breasts, and Kagome promptly scared the crap out of him when she snuck up behind the monk, cracking her knuckles, while she asked sickeningly sweetly

“What was that?” With a big toothy smile, that of course meant, she was showing her fangs.

Inuyasha had to suppress a fit of chuckles at that, and didn’t need his sense of smell at the moment to tell him that the bouzu was scared, especially after he turned around to catch the way Sango was glaring at him.

So now that they’ve reached the village, the two of them had been spending the remainder of the day together, by themselves, sitting up in Goshinboku.

“Hey, you did pretty good back there…” Inuyasha said, while sitting up on the tree branch next to Kagome.

“So did you…” she returned, leaving it at that. She wasn’t going to comment on the incredibly strong sensation of fear (for her safety) that she had sensed from him as he fired that final arrow, it was enough to know he felt it, and she was touched.

But though she was willing to let it slip, Inuyasha apparently felt otherwise, being more talkative the longer he remained in her body.

“These human emotions of yours are gonna take some getting used to…” he suddenly blurted out.

“But you were able to channel your fear into your arrow, and made it all the more powerful, I’d say, you’ve already got it down.” She whispered after his comment.

“I still don’t like feeling like that…” he mumbled humbly.

“I know…” she sighed, wrapping an arm around him and pulling him against her, to rest his head against her shoulder, since she was currently the taller one.

Kagome tried to think of something to lighten the mood, so taking a whiff if her own hair, on the head that was currently resting right below her nose, she smiled softly, and said “Hey, I do smell nice…”

Inuyasha chuckled smally at her words, and mumbled “Yeah…”

```````
That night, neither of them wanted to sleep, though they were both so tired that they realized they had to. Neither had mentioned to their other friends the fact that they share each other’s memories in their dreams, nor had Inuyasha told Kagome what it was he dreamt about the night before.
Everyone was understanding enough of their current situation, how upsetting something like that could be, that they said nothing when the couple announced that they’d both be sleeping outside that night. Though Kagome was tired, she wasn’t truthfully cold, and didn’t appose to being outside, especially since they had a fire, since they went back to where they’d made their earlier makeshift camp from two nights ago, when they were practicing their respective battle techniques. It was a good thing they had, too.
Though Inuyasha was feeling the cold, being in a human body, he toughed it out, and didn’t complain, all the while wondering just how many times Kagome herself had been the one to tough it out and not complain, when she was as miserable as he currently was.
Kagome could sense his duress, and said the first thing that popped into her mind, that would surely cheer him up, or at least, make him realize, it could be much worse.
“Hey, I know you’re not happy with being in my body, but look on the bright side….”
He raised an eyebrow, momentarily pausing in rolling out the sleeping bag as he was doing, waiting for her to finish, wondering what on earth could possibly be a ‘bright side.’
“We’ll be changing back in like a week, right?” she asked knowingly, making him think about it.
“What’s so great about that?” he asked grumpily, wishing they could change back now.
“Remember where I was with my cycle?” She decided upon, blushing profusely as she said those words.
An amusing expression of realization spread across Inuyasha’s face, as what she was hinting at dawned on him. She wouldn’t start her monthly blood time for about two weeks, so he would, apparently, be spared that experience. She was right, it could be much worse.
Through the crimson blush that had stained his cheeks, he managed to mumble “Keh…”
***Inuyasha’s Dream***
She was scared, at first, having been kidnapped by the wolf prince, for her ability to sense the jewel shards. But her fear quickly morphed into courage, when she helped little Shippo escape. Slowly but surely, the seriousness of the situation sunk in, as she found herself fighting with the wolves, against the Birds of Paradise that were eating them. It surprised her though, when they started called her “Sister.” She didn’t know why Inuyasha had gotten so upset, she sympathized with the wolves once she understood, Koga was doing it all out of love and devotion of his people. He was their leader, and it was up to him to save them all from the threat those other youkai possessed. It stung her in the worst possible way when Inuyasha insinuated that she had actually slept with him, and she stormed off without taking the time to think about things from his point of view, which she did, quite thoroughly, once she was soaking in her tub at home. Deciding to come back, she was more than a little humiliated to learn Shippo had shown his drawings around, but that wasn’t that bad, not really. Not as bad as later, when she saw the two of them together, when she saw him with…her. She was a fool to think he actually cared, to think he may actually be in love with her, as Shippo had claimed. Like an idiot, she had gotten her hopes up, heart held high, that his jealousy over Koga could mean anything other than not wanting to share his shard detector. In that moment, she knew, she could see it in his eyes, what he wanted, needed to say, but couldn’t at the moment. In that moment, she ran, knowing if she stayed that she would hear what she couldn’t hear, what she prayed beyond anything wasn’t the truth. He had chosen Kikyo. Later, when she realized she still had her jewel shards, she knew she had to return them, but…couldn’t face them, couldn’t face him. She tried on more than one occasion to jump through the well, but chickened out. Wanting to see him so badly, but knowing when she did, that it would be the last time, and she wanted to postpone that last time. She didn’t want it to be over, not yet. Breaking down, she cried on her mother’s shoulder, and her soothing words helped her come to her final decision. She needed to follow her heart. It was then that she made up her mind. She’d rather be second to him, then not be with him at all. Even if it would mean that they would never be more than friends, and his heart would forever belong to Kikyo, leaving no room for herself. When she told him this, she couldn’t bring herself to use the word love, to tell him that she loved him, just as Kikyo does. He doesn’t need to hear that now. But she did say, that she understood Kikyo, and felt that they had a connection in at least that one way, in their desire to be with him. Let’s leave it at that. He was apparently willing to let her stay by him, and for that, she was eternally grateful, a gratitude that grew slightly, when he allowed her the rare luxury of holding his hand.
Slowly, he opened his eyes, eyes that were filled with the tears his remembered emotions had caused him. It took him a minute to realize who he was, and that those memories were not his own. He had broken her heart. He never knew. Sure, he knew that she had been upset over that incident, but he never realized that she had been so deeply in love with him.
Looking over at his body, at the girl who was sleeping next to him, she was still asleep. But it didn’t seem that she was having a very restful dream, with the way she was squinting her brow, and mumbling a few small things out loud. His hearing not being what it used to be, he tried to breath as quietly as possible, and make no other noise whatsoever, as he strained himself, leaning closer to her, in an attempt to hear what she mumbled. What she had said was…. “Kikyo.”
It pained him even more. Why? Why did Kagome have to be subjected to that? Not like this, not now, he should wake her up, and spare her from that pain. It was the least he could do. He was just about to wake her too, before she suddenly bolted awake on her own, clinching her chest with clawed hands, while uttering the hurt filled question…
How could you??
Blinking, it took her a minute, too, to shake the feelings from her head. Glancing next to her, she was surprised to see Inuyasha already wide awake, and looking at her with a strange mixture of sympathy and understanding.
“You dreamt of when I was sealed to the tree, didn’t you?” He asked, merely a whisper, speaking so lowly with Kagome’s voice, that he knew only his own demonic ears would be able to pick it up.
She said nothing, but her ears lowered on the top of her head, before she lowered her gaze as well, and softly nodded.
“That’s funny….” He said next, his voice sounding completely void of humor at the moment, as he continued with his ironic observation. “You dream of when Kikyo pierced my heart, and I dream of when I pierced yours.”
Even his human ears didn’t miss her gasp, as she raised her eyes to look at him again. The crescent moon somehow provided enough light for her hanyou eyes to see the glistening of unshed tears that were currently in her friend’s borrowed orbs of chocolate.
“Tell me…” he began next, sounding soft, slightly depressed perhaps, but also, somehow, slightly hopeful. “Are you still in love with me?”
