CHAPTER TWO

Link and Zelda trembled in their blankets, not from the cold, but from the fear of the story.

Spryte continued…

Spryte: Well… you can bet your boots that when Daddy heard about Jack Frost wanting to be Mortal… He was Angry! In fact he was as mad as a Blizzard!

* * *

King-Oberon: “Outright Insubordination!!”

Jack: “If I am insubordinate, Father, it was you who made me so!”

King-Oberon: “I did?... But how, my Son?”

Jack: “Because… I'm the only one you send out their among the mortals in the winter, and it is only then that I am permitted out there.”

“Bring joy to the mortals! Make their Christmas' whiter! You ordered.”

“But when I try to shared their joy… they can't Hear, or See me because my powers cover me up.”

“Even if they hadn't, no one would want to know a tiny little Fairy like me!”

“So, why can I not be part of them?”

King-Oberon: “Because, you'd be a stranger to their ways, my boy.”

“Nobody out there really wants to know, Jack Frost!”

Jack: “You're wrong, Father. One person does.”

* * *

He told him about, Anju.

* * *

Jack: “Magician, she calls me…Hero.”

“Father, please… Grant my dream come-true!”

King-Oberon: “Ohh…Time! Give me time to consider your request! A Decade, or two.”

Jack: “I'm afraid… that may be too late!”

* * *

He began to sing again.

* * *

Jack: (Singing)

-I'd like to be, like everyone I see,
Not Special, Just an ordinary guy.
Who falls in love, and leads a simple life
At least, I'd like to have the chance to try.

-The happiness of being me,
Is not what it's cracked up to be.
It's lonely being, One… of a kind.
It's lonely…being…One of a kind!

* * *

A Tear rolled down his cheek!

* * *

King-Oberon: “If you really feel so lonely, Jack, I will have to grant your wish.”

“You may become mortal! Temporarily… I will give you the rest of the winter of mortality.”

“And if by the first sign of Spring… you have obtained, and acquired the basic mortal essentials…”

“A Houseto shelter you…
A Horse…to bear you…
A Bag of Goldto sustain you…
and a Wifeto make it all worthwhile…”

“Then… you be Truly Mortal, and may stay so, with my blessing, Forever.”

* * *

Spryte: “Gee… that's some proposition.”

Jack: “No trouble at all, Spryte… Well, I'm off!”

Spryte: “Wait Jack… Take this please!”

* * *

She handed him the pendant with her name on it, which she always wore round her neck.

* * *

Jack: “Your Lucky-Charm?… but you love it so!”

Spryte: “It's okay… I can always make more. Think of it as something to remember your little sister by.”

Jack: “Thank you, Spryte! Don't worry… I'll never forget you… Farewell.”

* * *

Spryte: “And Jack Frost was on his way.”

“As he flew back to Termina, he could suddenly begin to feel mortal things for the first time.”

* * *

His wings vanished, and his skin became flesh in blood, and he grew to a regular size.

He wore a simple light blue Tunic, dark tights, white boots, and a cape.

* * *

Jack: “Oh my… A Heartbeat… and an itchy head… It's WONDERFUL!!!”

* * *

PLOP!!!... He fell into a snow bank near the icy-lake!

* * *

Jack: “OUCH!!!”

Anju: “Huh?... Who said that?”

* * *

She saw him pop out of the snow.

* * *

Jack: “I have Words now… I think I almost spoke one.”

“I have Bones now… I think I almost broke one.”

* * *

The moment he started walking on the ice, he slipped and fell.

* * *

Anju: “My, but you're very clumsy on ice.”

Jack: “Clumsy on ice? Do you know who I am?”

Anju: “Well… You're certainly not my Little Warrior.”

Jack: (Slips again) “You're right… I am clumsy.”

Anju: “Even though you're not a warrior… You are very nice. What's your name?”

Jack: “Jack Fr…Oops!!”

Anju: “Jack Oops?”

Jack: “No…uh…uh…Spryte… I- I'm Jack Spryte the Blacksmith…see!”

* * *

He showed her the pendant on his neck, with the name Spryte carved into it.

* * *

Anju: “A Blacksmith. We need a Blacksmith in town.”

Jack: “Well… I need a town to Blacksmith in.”

Anju: “Well… Why don't you stay in Clock-Town.”

Jack: “Why don't I stay in Clock-Town.”

Anju: “Come on… I'll race you.”

* * *

But he slipped and fell again.

Spryte, and Crystal were using magic to watch him from the Fairy-Springs.

* * *

Crystal: “He's falling all over himself.”

Spryte: “Jack Frost, slipping on ice? What's the world coming to?”

Crystal: “Mortals are never as graceful as Fairies.”

Spryte: “Mark my words, Crystal. He's going to be in big trouble if he's not careful.”

King-Oberon: “We must not allow harm to come to, Jack Frost.”

“Spryte… Crystal… therefore, you will both become mortals until the Spring!”

* * *

“Spryte, You actually became mortal?” asked Link.

“For a while, yes.” Said Spryte, an then she continued…

* * *

Spryte: Now… back in Clock-Town, at the Stock-Pot-Inn, Anju's folks invited Jack Frost…or Jack Spryte to dinner.”

* * *

Old-Lady: “Eat hearty, and curse the Skull-Kid!!”

Young-Lady: “Mama!”

Old-Lady: “On Christmas, sometimes we share a turkey sandwich… without the Turkey of course.”

Anju: “Grandmamma?... Mr. Spryte has no place to sleep. May he stay the night with me in my room?”

Old-Lady: “Sure… why not! It's been so long since we had company.”

Jack: “I'll find a house in the morning. It's very important I find I house.”

Anju: “Oh… But there are no empty hoses in Clock-Town, Mr. Spryte, and the Stock-Pot in is rental only!”

Jack: “Then I'll build one.”

Young-Lady: “With what?... the Skull-Kid owns all the Timber, and the Brick!”

Jack: “But I have to get a house. Not to mention a Horse… a Bag of gold… and- -!”

Young-Lady: “The Skull-Kid owns the only horse, and all the gold… The King of the Masked-Beasts!”

Old-Lady: “But even the Masked-Beasts couldn't stand him! So, they all left.”

Young-Lady: “Now he lives alone in his castle… High on Miserable-Mountain.”

* * *

Just outside of Clock-Town, The Skull-Kid sat up in his empty Castle on the mountain top.

* * *

Skull-Kid: (Singing)

-I'm the Skull-Kid, I'm King of all the Masked-Beasts,
But there are No Masked beasts to be king of, there's the rub.
There's the Rub…
There's the Rub!

-I'm the Skull-Kid, I could have been a Pharaoh,
but there are No Pyramids around here, there's the rub.
There's the Rub…
There's the Rub…
There's the Ru-u-u-ub…
Rub-a-dub-a-dub-dub-Rub!

-I rule with magical hand.
I get whatever I demand.
I own the people and the land.
So why is it I'm not happy, I don't understand!

-I'm the Skull-Kid, I could have been a Rajah,
but there are No Elephants around here, there's the rub.
There's the Rub…
There's the Rub…

-I'm the Skull-Kid, I could have been a Shogun,
but there are No Samurai around here, there's the rub.
There's the Rub…
There's the Rub…
There's the Ru-u-u-ub…
Rub-a-dub-a-dub-dub-Rub!

There's the Rub…
I Hate the Rub…
There's the Ru-u-u-ub…
Rub-a-dub-a-dub-dub-Rub!

* * *

Spryte: My brother found out that no mortals or animals would live with the Skull-Kid.

So the mean, and evil Masked-Beast King had to make artificial ones out of Rock, Leaves, Sticks, and a little magic.

There was Rockefeller… the Horse.

And Forest-Fetcher… The butler.

And there was his army of… WAWIOR's… in rocky armor.

Wilkin…Willy…Waldo… Warren… and all the rest of them. Each lifeless with a stone for a heart, but very mean and powerful.

Why, even the Mice were artificial.

And then, to have someone to talk to… there was his little puppet, Twiggy!

* * *

Skull-kid used a playful voice when he made the puppet talk.

* * *

Skull-Kid: “Hello… Twiggy!”

(S-K)/Twiggy: “Hello, Skull-Kid! Gee, it's swell being here with you.”

Skull-Kid: “Twiggy, Twiggy on my knee… Who is Handsome as can be?”

(S-K)/Twiggy: “You are, Skull-Kid!”

Skull-Kid: “Ha, ah… And Twiggy… who is brave, smart, Strong, and nice?”

(S-K)/Twiggy: “You are, Skull-Kid!”

Skull-Kid: “Nice… Twiggy! Ohh, it is so good to be loved.”

* * *

Back at the Stock-Pot-Inn…

* * *

Jack: “The Skull-Kid, has got to be overthrown!”

* * *

There was a knock at the door, Anju saw two pretty girls… Spryte, and Crystal.

* * *

Anju: “Oh… Hello there!”

Spryte: “Hello, miss… have you by any chance see a young Blacksmith around these parts?”

* * *

Jack's eyes widened.

* * *

Jack: “I don't believe it! These are my younger sisters.”

“This is ,Crystal.”

Crystal: “How do, please.”

Old-Lady: “What is she, an angel?”

Young-Lady: “She's even to pretty to be a Princess.”

Jack: “Oh…uh well… Crystal is a Princess, A Gypsy-Princess.”

“She pleased the…magic Gypsy-Barron who made her beautiful.”

“And this is my other sister…Spr- -”

Spryte: “Ah, ah, ah, ah… Shhh!”

Jack: “Oops!”

Anju: “Another Oops?”

Spryte: “Uh…Amelia… Juliana… Rosemarry… Thermopolis! That's me.”

Jack: (Whispers) “What?!”

Spryte: “It's all I could think of.”

Old-Lady: “Well…Whoever… Come on in.”

“Daughter… bring an extra helping of soup!”

Jack: “You won't regret this, Madam. With my sisters by my side, I just know the Skull-Kid's days are numbered.”

“First thing tomorrow, we'll pay a little visit… to the King of Masked-Beasts.”
