Chapter Five

To Test A Bond Of Three

Sasuke smirked at the way that Naruto was jumping up and down, he eased into his taijutsu stance and looked at his sparring partner with narrowed eyes. “Dobe, quit jumping up and down so we can start.” Naruto stopped abruptly and his voice raised with his anger as he yelled at Sasuke. “Don’t call me that bastard!” Sasuke almost rolled his eyes at this repetitive comeback. “Che, are you going to stand there all day dobe?” Naruto’s left eye twitched in irritation. “Damn you teme!!!” He shouted, and leaped at him with a high kick, landing on the ground on all fours as Sasuke dodged easily. “You’ll have to do better than that.” With a burst of speed, the black haired genin appeared in front of Naruto, a hard punch to the stomach and a kick to the side sent him sailing into a tree that was across the clearing. “Chikushou…” Naruto muttered and stumbled up, his vision was a little blurry but that returned to normal within minutes.

“You’re going to lose Sasuke! Shadow clone jutsu!” He yelled and formed a single seal, grinning at the shocked look on his face as four solid copies stood on either side of him. “How do you know that jutsu dobe?” Sasuke asked as he stared at the clones. Naruto snickered. “Heh. You didn’t hear how I saved Iruka-sensei and beat up Mizuki-sensei? He had it coming to him though.” The clones rushed at Sasuke and groaned when they landed with a thump against one another. Poofs were heard as they butted heads extremely hard, they muttered “Itai!, Watch where you’re going!” Before they disappeared out of existence.

Naruto grimaced slightly and pulled a kunai out of his holster. Sasuke noticed this, and his eyes flashed with slight disappointment. Dashing forward to deliver a blow to Naruto’s stomach, he smirked as he fell to the ground, loosing his grip on the kunai that he was holding. “This is taijutsu training dobe.” he murmured and kicked him hard when he was finally up again, glaring at him. “It’s something that will make you stronger.”

Lunging at Sasuke, he sent a spinning kick at his midsection, and when the raven haired genin blocked it, he countered that with a sharp hit to his side. Not wanting to show any weakness in front of the so called ‘dead last,’ Sasuke raised his head and glared into Naruto’s grinning face, grabbing his fist that was heading straight for his face. Grabbing his arm with both of his hands, he flipped him over and kicked him onto his side so that he would be disoriented.

This kick didn’t faze him as much as the others, he had cushioned some of the blow with his arms. Kakashi and Kat had stopped their spar when they heard Naruto’s shout of Kage bunshin no jutsu. “Sasuke, Naruto, that’s quite enough.” Kakashi said and walked over to them. The two genin were breathing heavily, and cuts were visible on both of them. He glanced at Kat, then at Naruto and Sasuke. “I think a break is in order. How about we all go and get some food so we can keep ourselves on our feet?” All three of them nodded. “Yatta! Let’s go and get RAMEN!” Naruto yelled happily, sure he was a little sore, but getting the chance to eat ramen and maybe even seeing Iruka-sensei there, who wouldn’t go to Ichiraku’s?

Kat nodded slowly, not really caring if they went to Ichiraku’s, and Sasuke was glaring at Naruto with a brooding look. “Is that all that you eat?” Naruto shook his head. “No, it’s just that ramen tastes so good and I could eat it all day! Rice balls are good too…so is the dango that Kat gave me a day ago…” He said, finishing off with a happy grin. Grabbing Kat’s arm in his excitement, he looked back to Kakashi and Sasuke. “Come on, Kakashi-sensei! Sasuke-teme! We’re going to eat RAMEN!” And almost ran the whole way to Ichiraku’s.

************************************************ ************************

“Ayame-chan!!! A bowl of miso and a bowl of chicken ramen onegai!” Kat called out as she sat down at the ramen stand. With Kakashi paying for the ramen and running low on funds this month, he told them to get one bowl each.. Sasuke’s voice corrected her. “Make that two bowls of chicken ramen and two bowls of miso ramen.” He sat down next to Kat and Kakashi sat next to Naruto. Glancing at Sasuke half surprised, she asked, “Let me guess, you’re getting chicken? I thought that you didn’t like ramen with the disgusted look on you face every time Naru-kun brings it up…” Sasuke leaned forward slightly and rested his chin on his hands. “I’ll eat ramen, just not in the quantities that he does.” Kat nodded in understanding. “I see. I know what you’re talking about.”

Ayame, who was happily talking to Old man Ichiraku, stopped when she heard Kat’s call of her name. Sticking her head out of the kitchen door, she grinned as she saw Naruto and the whole group. “Hello Naruto, Kat! It’ll be ready in a few minutes!”

Naruto was drooling over the smell of the cooking ramen and Kat couldn’t help but cringe in disgust. “Naruto, you’re drooling…It’s disgusting.” Kakashi lazily looked up from his Icha Icha Paradise and chuckled. It was indeed true that Naruto was drooling, and he looked more like a child than he normally did when he threw a tantrum. Looking at Kat with a pout, and whined. “I’m not drooling!” His statement was proved wrong when a trickle of saliva hit his pant leg. “Eeeww…” He mumbled and wiped it off hurriedly. Kat laughed. “I told you.” Sasuke smirked at Naruto’s misfortune. “Usurukontachi.” Naruto’s eyes narrowed. “You really are a jackass Sasuke.” Kat shook her head. Sometimes she really didn’t get their rivalry, but fighting here is just out of line. “Stop it NOW” she said firmly, looking at both of the boys to emphasize her point. Naruto glared at Sasuke one more time, but clammed up, knowing that if he did fight with Sasuke, Kat would be on both of their cases….

Sasuke’s eyes narrowed dangerously as he stared at Kat. She dares to tell me what to do? An Uchiha? With great restraint, his clenched hand stayed on the table, and away from his kunai holster. Glancing at him with a questioning look in her eyes, she glanced at her sensei who was staring at the three of them with a sweeping gaze. I wonder what he’s thinking about? She focused her attention back on Sasuke and asked softly, “What’s the matter?” His obsidian eyes met with her blue green ones and he said “Nothing.” flatly.

Hmm…he always goes from silent, then to pissed, then to emotionless. Why is that? Damn…I’ll have to figure him out. Such a confusing guy. I thought that Naruto was weird when he wasn’t happy…Blinking when the bowls of ramen were set in front of them, she reached for a pair of chopsticks and broke them in half quickly. “Itadakimasu.” the three chorused and began to eat slowly, not wanting to scald their mouths.

While the three genins were busy with their food, Kakashi took this time to eat his own, making Ayame almost see stars as she glimpsed his face. She knew not to tell the three that weren’t looking at him, because it was something that was worked out beforehand.

Their meal was relatively quiet besides the sound of Naruto’s slurping of his noodles. Kat was lost in thought as she continued to eat, not really noticing when she hit the bottom of her bowl with her chopsticks. Finishing off quickly, she saw that the others were done as well. “So you were waiting for me? Gomen. I was lost in thought.” Kakashi cracked a smile under his mask. “I wouldn‘t worry about it.” Sasuke said as he glanced at her then out at the streets of Konoha.

“We should get back to training…” Kat muttered and watched as Kakashi mournfully looked into his wallet after he paid Ayame for the ramen. Glancing back to the genin, he nodded. “Instead of training, there’s something that you’re going to do. A test that differs from every genin team, but since this year’s crop of student’s have passed in an unusual way, this test will be an unusual one as well.” Kat digested this and voiced her question, which was unaware to her, Sasuke’s as well. “Okay…what’s this test based on? I know that there’s going to be some main element to it, or is that what we have to figure out?” Naruto tilted his head to the side in confusion, the words swirled around in his head, but he really couldn’t put a finger on what Kat was talking about.

“The test is a bell test, and it’s also something that you have to figure out for yourself. You have two main ideas to figure out during this test to pass as well.”

“Well, are we going or not?” Naruto asked impatiently. Kat nodded and walked out of Ichiraku’s, Sasuke and Naruto following her at a leisurely pace. Walking out of Ichiraku’s as well, he said to all of them. “Meet up at the training seventh training ground. Kakashi used a teleportation jutsu as they nodded, and he disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Training Field 7

Walking into the training grounds, all three of the genin were surprised that Kakashi was actually on time for once. He had appeared in the clearing just when Naruto had sped to a large, branched out sakura tree. He looked up with such an awe of wonderment, the petals slowly floating down were beautiful. Kat giggled and walked up behind him, placing her hand on his shoulder. “Hey, Kakashi-sensei is here Naruto. It’s not the time to daydream.” He blinked owlishly and shook his head. “Oh…right.”

Setting an alarm clock on a stump, he almost laughed outright at all three of their bewildered looks on their faces. “You will have two hours to retrieve these bells from me.” He said, dangling five bells in front of him. “Your test starts now.” All three of them disappeared into the trees, watching as their sensei walked into the clearing to read his Icha Icha Paradise. From time to time, he would let out girlish giggles and his nose was constantly buried in the book.

“We can’t rush out at him…That would be reckless and stupid.” Kat whispered softly. Sasuke agreed with her as he stared down at his giggling, perverted sensei.

Naruto was feeling antsy, he wanted to get these bells and get the whole test over with. “Kat! Kakashi-sensei is too busy reading that book to notice us if we stay quiet! Let’s go and get them!” He whispered loudly. She shook her head. “Naruto, he’d overpower us! We’d have to work together to get those bells if we want to stand a chance!” She whispered back. She knew that she was right, and the glaring look that Sasuke had gave to Naruto had confirmed her suspicions as well.

“Okay…If that’s one part of the test that we’re to figure out…then what’s the other?” She said on a soft whisper, not knowing that she was saying it out loud. Sasuke glanced at her, as well as Naruto. “I’m not sure.” he replied coolly.

Having enough of this waiting, Naruto had jumped down and hid behind a tree that was on the edges of the clearing that Kakashi was standing in. He contemplated on using his shadow clones or just jumping him to try and get the bells, but then he had an idea. A wide fox like smirk spread across his face and he slowly crept closer to his sensei.

A branch snapped under Naruto’s foot as he stepped out of the shadows of the trees, he was several feet from where Kakashi was standing. Quickly forming the seal for his Oiroke no jutsu, he formed the seal for his shadow clone jutsu and smirked as he appeared around Kakashi in a blonde female form, which had him drop his book when he saw all of the girls that were naked with only smoke covering their most intimate areas. “Kakashi-sensei…Don’t you want to play with us?” the girls cooed. They giggled as they saw a noticeable red spot of blood that was seeping through Kakashi’s mask. If he wasn’t careful, he could pass out any minute. Peeeerfect.

Kakashi saw the devilish glint in all of the henged girls eyes, and knew that he had to get out of there. He used a teleportation jutsu and sighed with relief as he found that Naruto wasn’t around. That boy will be trouble. He sighed irritably as he took off several masks to clean his bloody nose, and then put several back on.

************************************************************** **********

Sasuke and Kat had fled the safety of the trees to search for Kakashi, leaving Naruto who was alone in the clearing where they were just at. Quiet footfalls were barely heard as they both jumped from tree to tree, searching for Kakashi’s chakra signature. Sasuke noticed it first, and stopped, getting a nod from Kat. Jumping down to the ground, she grinned as she grabbed some ninja wire and kunai out of her holster and a small pouch that was attached to her leg. “Do you know any fire element jutsus?” He nodded dully. “Hai.” Her grin became wider. “Well, then this will be fun…” she had a wicked grin on her face as she began tying the wire to the kunai and creating a trap that she’s used many times. Stringing it from the trees, she grinned as she laid the trip wire.

Her eyes flashed with glee as she leaped at Kakashi, she cursed inwardly when he dodged, and she tried to engage him in a small taijutsu spar. Every kick and punch were blocked, the slashes of her kunai were dangerously close as he began to dodge faster. “So it seems that you’ve shown yourself finally Kat.” She grinned and jumped away from him, throwing a kunai in his direction. He dodged it, but when he head the sound of the kunai slicing through the wind, he looked behind him and dodged the projectiles quickly. A smirk was present on her face as she threw one of the kunai that were tied to ninja wire toward Kakashi, grinning at how the sidestepping and dodging made it wind around his lower body and left arm.

Throwing another kunai into the bark of the tree that Sasuke was leaning against, watching Kat and Kakashi spar, he glanced up and smirked. He knew that Kakashi wouldn’t be expecting it, and that gave him an upper hand…for just how long he was trapped.

The wire was used to bind him, and as Sasuke stepped out In front of Kat and as he finished the set of seals he started, he called out “Katon Goukakyuu no Jutsu.” The large fireball barreled toward the silver haired jounin sensei, and as it engulfed him in flames, he disappeared in a poof of smoke. “Damn, I should of guessed it…he used a kage bunshin.” Kat cursed and threw a kunai into a tree. “He’s still here…Don’t you feel it?“ The wire and kunai clattered to the ground, and she looked up when she heard a soft chuckling. “Very observant of you Kat, and I have to say that I’m impressed that you got Sasuke to work with you.” Sasuke scoffed. “It would be better to work with her than the dobe.” Kat glared at him. “That might be a compliment coming from you, but working with Naruto isn’t so bad.”

Naruto barreled into the clearing and gasped slightly as he tried to catch his breath. “There you are teme! We still have to find Kakashi-sensei and all that you’re doing is standing here?!” He shouted. Kat clamped her hands over her ears to try and stop the ringing. “Naruto, lower the decibels a bit, please?”

Naruto’s head shot up in the direction of where Kakashi was hiding and he caught their eyes in a glance. “Get down!” he whispered harshly. All three of them dropped to the ground, much to the displeasure of Sasuke and Kat, and she internally winced as a shuriken whizzed by her head nearly cutting off some of her hair.

The loud ringing of the alarm clock stopped them dead in their tracks as they were getting up, and Kakashi appeared before them. “Your time is up.” He dangled the bells before him. ‘You didn’t retrieve them from me. But, there’s something else that you’ve shown me.” Kat looked at him confused. “What’s that?” A grin was visible beneath his mask. “You’ve already found the first part of the test, you just have to know what’s the second half.” he knew that he was speaking in riddles, and he relished the confused looks on his genin’s faces.

“So does that mean we have another chance?” Naruto piped up. A glint appeared in Kakashi’s only visible eye. “I’ll give you twenty minutes.”

Almost identical smirks crossed both Kat’s and Sasuke’s faces, and Naruto grinned. Naruto was the first to attack, then Kat and Sasuke joined in. Kakashi managed to dodge most of Naruto’s attacks, and a kick to his side sent him reeling, and this left Kakashi’s side open. Kat took this opportunity to grab the bells and used kawarimi to replace them with acorns. She sent a low kick to is ankles and jumped back Sasuke followed suit and grabbed Naruto’s collar as they faced their sensei.

Kat let out a bell like chuckle and dangled the silver bells in front of her face. “Look what I have sensei.” she tossed two to Sasuke and Naruto, and kept one for herself. “Looks like we passed.” she said with a smirk. Kakashi nodded. “Hai, you three have.” The smirk on Kat’s face turned into a vulpine one. “The other part of the test that you were hinting at was having compassion for your teammates, wasn’t it? I already know that the first part was teamwork.” She said and grinned. Kakashi sighed. “It seems that I have two quick-witted students…”

The sun’s rays were dying down and Naruto looked up at the sunset. “You’re all dismissed. Meet up at the bridge at 7:00 a.m. The three of them walked back to Konoha, already knowing that their sensei was gone.

************************************************************ ************

As they passed Ichiraku’s, Sasuke and Kat couldn’t help but cringe. Sakura was sitting there sipping a green tea thoughtfully. Turning around when she heard Naruto’s boisterous voice, her eyes lit up happily as she caught site of Sasuke. “Sasuke-kun!” She latched onto his arm and he looked at her in disdain. “Get off.” He said harshly, and as she stared at him, her lip quivered slightly. Kat stood near him, her eyes never leaving Sakura’s. “Sasuke, let’s go get some onigiri, Personally, I’d have to say I’d like some right now, and with the way Naruto keeps staring at that ramen stand…he’s going to drag us in there too. Plus, I’m making Naruto eat something else but ramen.” Naruto whirled around as he heard, “…Making Naruto eat something else but ramen.” He looked at her with watery eyes. “Why are you taking my ramen from me?” he whined.

Kat almost laughed and she smiled at him. “Naruto-kun, ramen is okay to eat sometimes, but eating it all of the time is just plain disgusting.” Sakura’s arms clenched around Sasuke’s pale arm and he scowled as he glanced at the pink haired kunoichi. Letting go quickly as if she was burnt, she stared at the three with jealousy, the slightly tense but still friendly air around them was something that she desired..

******************************************************** ****************

Sakura was left behind, lost in her thoughts as they left the shop quickly. The smell of fresh rice and cooking fish was present as they passed shop after shop and Kat’s mouth watered a bit. “I haven’t had onigiri in a while…It smells so good…” she mumbled. The large restaurant like shop wasn’t full of customers like Ichiraku’s was, it had more of a slow traffic today. Sasuke leaned against the doorway inside and Naruto leaned against the walls of the shop outside as they waited for Kat to get a box of onigiri.

Grinning as she walked up to Sasuke, both of them walked out of the shop which was becoming packed now. Pulling on Naruto’s arm, she led them all to her house, It was the closest.

Opening the door to the quiet mansion, she showed the two to the dining room and sat the onigiri on the table. Glancing around, Sasuke surmised that the inherited Nakami compound was almost the same size of the Uchiha compound.

“Hey Naru, Sasuke, do you want some mint tea?” she glanced at Naruto who was munching on one of the rice balls already and Sasuke who was watching the steam rise from them. He looked up and nodded with Naruto. She grinned slightly and stood up, the clanging of cup signified that she had brought out cup and a louder clang signified the placing of the tea kettle on the stove.

*********************************************************** *************

“You know teme, you should talk more, you wouldn’t be as much of a prick to others when they actually try to talk to you. I really don’t see why they try to talk to you though, you’re just a bastard. You’re completely rude to everyone, when they want to get a word in you just glare at them. You’re a cold hearted bastard Sasuke-teme.” Sasuke sneered at Naruto.

“I could care less about what you think dobe. The villagers are simply to put it, brainless, insignificant, fans that don’t know the meaning of the words back off.”

Kat gave a low chuckle as she stepped out of the shadows that covered most of her doorway, and she turned to Sasuke. “What you say about the villagers is mostly true. But there are some exception, and one of them is standing in front of you. Another is to your left, and he doesn’t give a damned if you’re an Uchiha.”

With that, she sat the tray that she was holding down on the table. “Here you two. It’s good.” Taking her cup, she gently blew on the hot liquid to cool it and sipped it slowly.

The quick meal of onigiri and green tea was over in ten minutes and as Naruto and Sasuke stood, she smiled as Naruto grinned widely at her. “See you tomorrow!!” he hugged her tightly and waited for Sasuke to say his goodbyes.

A slight nod of his head and his voice softly saying “Arigato.” Both male shin obi’s walked out of her house and she sighed. “I wonder what’s going to happen tomorrow?”
