Original Poetry Fan Fiction ❯ The Unlikely Poet's Notebook ❯ Light ( Chapter 26 )

[ A - All Readers ]
Act I

The encroaching shadow consumes our hearts
Our only salvation; a motto of the judicious
"As long as the smallest light remains
It shall pierce the most overwhelming darkness"

Though the shadows' strength is formidable
Waning only at the highest light
Still there burns inside our burdened souls
A flame of unrelenting courage and will

The origin unknown, the numbers plenty
Armies felled like cheap lumber in the defense
Heroes conquered long before their time
Truly the most persistent of all plagues

Act II

As the years pass, and the strong begin to fade
Still come the shadows, from within their own darkness
Unforgiving, insatiable in their destructive appetite
Taking life, and giving little in return.

Amidst the madness, three youths steel their spirits
One a maiden of devastating beauty, a centrepiece to the tale
Hair of an autumn hue, with eyes entrancing blue
Never without a smile, and a song in her heart

Another of raven locks, eyes a deep green
A trusting aura, contradicting his demeanor
Always with a sullen acceptance, he sighs his views
Our maiden by his side, contrasting hope

The third a man of great kindess and peace
Eyes an earthy shade, with hair a lightened brown
Determination burning within him, besides his loss
For once our maiden, resided in his arms

Act III

For long the trio fought against the blackness
Learning the weaknesses and overcoming the strengths
The earthen eyed one took up his father's sword
And pledged to defend his once beloved to the end

In silence he battled the all consuming darkness
Till the day the dawn shone a bloody red
And disastrous news fell upon his ears
For our maiden had been abducted

In his anguish, he tore through the shadows like air
His bloodlust conjuring fear into foe and friend alike
He soon met the raven haired one, and begged his aid
The raven said not a word, and turned from the stricken swordsman

In his disgust the earthen exiled himself to a forest
Where he was struck by a flash of inspiration
He would openly challenge the shadows lord
Once his preparations were complete

Act IV

Residing in the darkest pit the earthen waited
Knowing that he may never again see the sunrise
As he awaited his blackened adversary
Whom had dared endanger his cherished one

Not a day had passed when a silky voice spoke out of the darkness
"The strongest of this world have fallen before me
You think it wise to issue a challenge to that
which you cannot even truly see?"

As he finished his voice turned soon to a scream
As the floor walls and ceiling above
Gleamed with light as if the heavens had opened
No corner nor edge was spared the judging bright

"You may be strong amongst your shadows
But you've lived in darkness too long to bear the light"
The earthen replied. And shaded his vision.
He withdrew at the sight of his antagonist

For there, with skin of a darkened grey
And all the darkness of hell in his eyes
stood the raven. Staring angrily against the light
The earthen roared in disbelief and anger

Act V

To learn of the threat, in order to understand it
Was the plan of the shadow lord, the raven
A premonition warned of the piercing light
In the heart of a soul most righteous and kind

"Though your knowledge is your greatest advantage"
Spat the earthen through teeth locked shut
"Your means were your greatest mistake!"
A storm of love raging inside of him, he strikes.

The foundations of the earth itself trembled
As the shadow lord and the earthen, guided by light
Clashed in a seemingly stalemated encounter
Even without his shadows, the raven would not yield

"There are as many shadows as there are your people
For everyone has darkness within them
their hatred, fear, anger and jealousy feed the void
Even you; avatar of the accursed light"

Act VI

The battle raged on as the hours ticked by
Neither side giving the slightest bit of ground
But in the end, our hero of the light, the earthen
Vanquished the shadow lord, and his brood

"Though the darkness smothers all it passes,
It can never cast a shadow upon the light
For As long as the smallest light remains
It shall pierce the most overwhelming darkness"

And so the earthen plunged his sword into the raven
And the blackened forces dissipated into nothingness
From the vanquished a jeweled ring did appear
This, the hero used, to travel through shadow

Upon locating the maiden within a shaded cavern
She seemed to recall nothing of the raven
Nor the events preceding her capture
She had never loved the shadow lord

Act VII

And so the world was purged of shadow
And the people hailed the earthen as their hero
Bard's and minstrels sang of his deeds
And the people demanded him their King

Knowing the earthen too modest to accept
The maiden herself accepted on his behalf
And the hero of the light asked only one thing in return
That she would be his queen, and bring light to his life

And so to this day the earthen and the maiden
Sit upon their immortal thrones and protect us all
With light and love, peace and prosperity
A symbol of the ever piercing light in darkness

As long as the smallest light remains
It shall pierce the most overwhelming darkness
Though a heart is forgotten in the darkness
The memory, needs only the smallest spark
