In the dead of night Patrick's cell phone rang. After so long he had finally gotten one simply so that he could stay in touch. "Hello?" What time was it? He struggled to sit up, but the voice on the other end made his blood run cold "No," he whispered breathlessly. "No!" He felt tears sting his eyes as he cursed. "Alright... Alright... I'll be home on the first flight. I can't... I mean, you're certain? Aye. I'll be there...."
He hung up the phone, feeling much like a zombie all of a sudden. He moved without thinking, without feeling....
Leia sat up in bed that morning as she heard Rio and Gabe getting ready for school. She pulled her knees to her chest and sighed. Usually she would spend her days looking for signs of Patrick, but today was the day she was truly letting go. She had a plane ticket on her night stand and though she wanted to spend Christmas with Rio and Gabe like every year, she decided it was time to go back to Italy, at least for a while, just to remember who she really was. Her bags had already been packed and her limo would be there in the afternoon. She just needed to get up and get moving.
It was seconds later when her door opened and Rio and Gabe came in to hug her and beg her not to go just yet.
Patrick caught the red eye flight back home. Grabbing the first newspaper, he read the article on the front page. Another soft curse as tears stained his eyes. 'Decorated War Hero Killed in Road Side Bombing'. This was followed with a picture of Michael. He put the paper in his bag and hailed a taxi.
It was Rio who called Leia as she was getting in the limo. He had seen the paper at school and he knew she would want to know. Leia's heart stopped as she heard him read the article.
"Are you...sure?" she whispered.
"Yes," Rio said softly.
Leia hung up the phone. Slowly, she got into the limo. "We need to make a few stops fist," she told the driver. Getting on her phone she had tones of flowers, food, gifts, and anything else she could think of sent to Patrick's family. Of course, she put her name on nothing.
Patrick dropped his bags as he was assaulted by hugs from the boys. "Lads. I'm so sorry," he whispered as they cried over the loss of their uncle. He looked up at Sally, who was sick with grief. Rachel cared for their daughter, but she looked just as distraught as their sister-in-law. Michael was the head of the family. He kept them together no matter what. Now he was gone.
"I'll do whatever I can to help," Patrick promised.
Leia stopped at the bank. "I want him to have the best funeral the military can offer," she said softly to the people that surrounded her. "Make sure the check to the family gets to them today. No excuses. The extra money will help with the loss and if they want to return to Ireland for the ceremony or..." she took a deep breath. "Just make sure the mil gets to them today." Slowly she stood. "I want a call to my phone when it gets to them. If they don't accept it, make sure the money gets put into the family account." They nodded and Leia walked out.
The phone rang amidst the sound of tears. With everyone out of their minds, Patrick walked over to pick up the phone. He heard what the bank was trying to tell him, but he couldn't believe it. "Who made the deposit?" His heart stopped when he heard the name. "We cannot accept that...but thank you." The teller told him what was to happen if he didn't accept. "Of course she would do that." He sighed and closed his eyes. "I'll call her myself to straighten it out. Do you have her number? Yes, thank you."
Taking out his cell, he programmed her number and dialed.
Leia looked at her phone as the limo pulled up to the airport. She didn't know the number, but it could be the bank. The driver opened her door as she answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Hello, Leia. Long time no hear," he said, trying to keep his voice calm and composed.
Leia froze. Her bags were being taken out of the limo and the driver held out his hand for her, but she hesitated. "I...can't talk," she said quickly and hung up the phone. Why did she do that? Because she was washing him from her...because it was the right thing to do... Slowly, she took the driver's hand and he helped her out. Someone smiled at her and started showing her to the terminal she was to go to.
Of course she couldn't. He dialed again, seeing if she would answer.
"Ms. we are boarding now," the attendant said.
Leia looked at her phone. "One moment," she said and answered. "I'm sorry for your loss, Mr. McClain...I'm not taking the money back."
"Please...do not talk about my loss," he whispered, pain soaking every word. "We cannot accept your money, Leia. Your generosity is too great..."
"No," she said softly. "It's not enough."
"Miss?"
"I'm coming!" Leia snapped. "It's my fucking plane, you can wait damn it!" She took a deep breath. "Please, just use the money for the family and you don't have to tell them it's from me. I don't really want them to know."
"Your plane... So, you're leaving then? You will not be here for the...funeral." That word sounded so cold and foreign to his lips.
"I wouldn't be wanted at something like that. We both know that. I think your family should only have to deal with one thing at a time. And the child that tore your family apart should at least have enough brain and heart to stay away," she said in a low tone.
"I...would like to see there," he whispered. "I've lost Michael, and I know it's selfish, but I'm already at my wit's end. Just...seeing you might help."
She shifted. "I'll...show up...and stay on the outskirts a good way from your family," she said. She owed him this. It was because of her foolishness that he didn't get to see Michael off before he went back to war. He never got to say good bye. "Please...don't tell your family. I won't stay long. Just enough to pay my respects and go."
"Aye," he whispered. "I would like that."
She nodded even though he couldn't see it. "Goodbye," she said slowly. She hung up. "Trip's off for a few days," she said to the people and started back to the limo.
The viewing was the most emotionally trying day of his life. Even the trial and being locked in prison wasn't as traumatizing as seeing his brother laying there in the coffin. A million thoughts filled his mind. Some made him angry. Some made him cry. Others simply made him feel numb. By the time the funeral came about, he thought he had cried as many tears as he possibly could.
He sat with the family, which ended up taking two pews. Throughout the service, he kept glancing back to see if she was there. He had been wrong. There were many more tears still to come.
Leia showed when the burial was being taken place. When they walked to coffin to the grave and the preacher was saying his peace, she stood a good few feet from the crowd. She was far enough away to not be heard so she stood by a tree wearing all black when her hair dancing in the cold chill. Her tears stung her face, but she wiped them quickly before they got too far. She wasn't sure why exactly she was crying, but she was...and in public. Her limo waited behind her, the driver ready to open her door at any second. She had told him to be prepared to have a quick getaway if the family saw her.
As the servicemen turned to give him a twenty one gun salute, Patrick turned to look away. It was in that instant that he saw her, standing there by herself. Taking a deep breath, he slipped through the crowd making his way toward her.
As soon as Patrick was spotted coming to her, she started backing away. The driver opened her door and she got in. "Hurry," she said and he nodded as he closed her door and rushed to his door.
Patrick's pace increased when he realized she was bolting. As he drew near the driver got into his car. Why was she leaving? "Leia," he whispered, reaching for the door.
When the door was opened, the driver couldn't take off without hurting Patrick. Leia froze and wiped her eyes again, not being able to look at him. "You should be with your family," she said softly.
"I am," he said as he got into the limo and sat beside her. She was crying.... He reached over and caressed her cheek, wiping the tears from her eyes. He sniffled, wiping tears from his own. "He's gone," he whispered.
She nodded. "I know."
He relaxed in the seat, laying his head back against the cool leather. "I miss him...." Looking over to her, he fixed his suit. "May I have a hug?"
"Yes, of course," she said. She owed him so much. She'd give him anything he wanted. Closing her eyes, she let him pull her into his chest as she wrapped her arms around him.
He held her tight, not wanting to let her go. In the silence of the car, it was easy to imagine that it was just them. He stroked her body, tears falling down onto her face. "I've missed you," he whispered.
She tried hard not to cry. She tried so very hard. "Please...don't say that."
"But I have. I lost Michael. I don't want to lose you...."
"I've already messed so much up, Mr. McClain...I really don't want to do anymore damage."
"Just tell me this. Would you...do you want to be together...again?"
It was silent for what seemed like forever. Leia needed to weigh her answer. She needed to make sure she was ready for what was to come after her answer. "Yes..." she whispered. More than anything, it was yes.
"Are you certain?" His hands stroked her back. He didn't want to believe what he had just heard. He didn't want to believe that he could actually have a chance. After all of this, it just didn't seem possible. For so long he had laid awake, thinking about her, and now she was telling him yes.
How many times had they fought to be together? How many times had it almost ended but came back to this? How could he ask her this after everything? "I need to know if...you love me..." Why else would he be her after she left him alone? Why else would he want to be with her after she ruined his family?
The next few seconds were going to change everything. With her pressed against him, her breathing tickling him, he knew then what his answer was. "Yes," he whispered.
Leia reached over and pushed a button. The area between the driver and them was closed giving the full privacy. "Yes, I am certain then."
"Do you...feel anything for me?" He cupped her face so that she could look up at him. His eyes were still red and puffy, but there was a hopeful smile on his face.
"It is...implied," she said softly.
"If you do...then I want to hear it."
She pulled back and looked down. "It's not so easy for me. I think that knowing it is just the same as saying it..."
"You know that's not true."
"It's enough that I admitted it. Saying it is too much at the moment..." She looked outside the tinted windows. The funeral was over and his family was looking for him. "You should leave before they realize there is an extra limo."
Turning her head, he leaned down and kissed her, gently licking her lips. "Call me. Please?"
She nodded. "I hope the money helps your family," she said as she opened the limo door and lowered the wall that blocked her view of her driver.
He walked out, taking a deep breath he pulled his jacket around him and started off to his family. Wrapping his arms around one of the little ones, he looked back at the limo but kept walking.
"Drive," Leia said in a low voice and slowly the limo took off. Her heart was pounding hard against her chest as the limo driver rounded corners and headed for home.
Patrick stayed at Rachel's house while they took care of everything dealing with Michael's death. They wanted to help Sally, but there was only so much they could do for her. The money that Leia transferred to them helped take care of Sally financially
while they figured everything they could. Patrick still didn't even know what he was going to do.
He couldn't stay here. He couldn't go to Ireland, not without Leia.
Leia waited two weeks before calling Patrick. It was Christmas and she wanted to wish him a Merry Christmas. She had to sneak away from Rio and Gabe large Christmas party. There seemed to be people everywhere she went so she had to go down stairs to the parking lot where it was freezing.
"Merry Christmas," he said with a smile, recognizing the number immediately. "What are you doing this evening?"
"Merry Christmas," she said and shivered with the cold. "The boys are having a party." She started walking to keep warm. "Sorry it took so long to call...I didn't want to call at a bad time. How is...everyone?"
"They're...adjusting. I guess that is the best way to describe it. Everyone is still broken hearted, and understandably so." His car stopped on the street and he opened up the door. "Want to get in out of the cold?"
She looked over at him with a smile and hung up her phone. She crawled in the car. "It's not safe to be seen with you," she said.
"And yet you still got in the car," he smirked. Leaning over he kissed her hungrily, massaging her lips with his. "Merry Christmas."
She ran her hand over his cheek. "Hotel?"
He nodded. Pulling away from the curb, he started off to the downtown district. "Rachel's letting me use her car, so hopefully no one will suspect...us."
She nodded. "Where...where were you all this time? I search the whole country for you," she said as he drove. Leaning down, she laid her head in his lap.
He was startled by her simple action. Reaching down, he ran his fingers through her hair. "Ireland," he explained. "I did a lot of work there to keep my mind off of things." Off of her. "I didn't realize.... Why did you search for me?"
"Every inch of the country. I didn't think to look in Ireland..." Of course he would go there. It was home.
"You didn't answer my question," he said as he traced the outline of ear. "Why were you searching for me?"
She sighed. "You know why, Mr. McClain. You know exactly why."
"How long have you felt this way?" He took a turn and pulled up to the hotel. It wasn't exactly high end, but not that many people would actually see them here. Looking down at her laying her head in his lap, he smiled. "You make me happy, Leia." He paused as he said that. Where had that come from?
She looked up at him, shocked that he would just out right say that. "Um...thanks..." she finally said. Sitting up she looked at the hotel and smiled. She then turned to him. "I don't really know how long I've felt this way. Long enough, I suppose." She got out of the car and started to the door. Going in, she started paying for a room.
When she came back out, he followed her to the room. Opening the door, he pulled her inside. Shutting and locking the door behind him, he wrapped his arms around her, kissing her slowly and sweetly. Leia jumped into his arms as they kissed. Her Christmas dress was short and as she wrapped her legs around his waist, it slid up high on her thigh. She brushed his lips with her tongue until he opened his mouth and when he finally did, she started massaging his tongue with hers lovingly. As her dress slid up, he could all but grind against her panties. Holding her ass with his hands, he pulled her close as he grinded. Her tongue in his mouth felt so good, so right. He moaned softly, missing her more than he had realized.
He hung up the phone, feeling much like a zombie all of a sudden. He moved without thinking, without feeling....
