Chapter 1

Washing up on Team Magma's submarine was not really the best choice they could have made, but what else was there to do? And within moments, they had been captured - though listening to Maxie's plan for World Domination using Groudon was certainly not fun. Of course, that was when the Magma grunt in the back of the room had caught the Blue Orb, and then everything had really gone downhill from there…

Lance wasn't sure why he had reached out to grab the Blue Orb, but he was quite certain that he had intended to stop Team Magma from using it to control Groudon. Of course, that wasn't much good because Kyogre had just escaped - let out by one of Team Aqua's operatives in disguise more like - and Team Aqua had the Red Orb, but he wasn't really in the right mind to ponder these things as the power in his hands screamed, and he felt his body respond.
Then his mind had gone blank, and he couldn't feel anything not even Father and then everything hurt and he wouldn't lose no he wouldn't lose himself but they were shrieking and he had to help-!
And he laughed, low and soft and chilling, nothing like what they had expected, and he felt all heads in the room swivel to face him, as he casually flipped his hood back, seeing shock and recognition flit across two familiar features…
There was no need for disguises now…

“L-Lance…” Ash whispered, recognizing the Dragon trainer, even as he saw red tattoos blaze into being, around his eyes and over his pale cheeks, even as the Magma uniform he had been wearing shredded in a burst of dark red energy, revealing night-black streaked with red. “Are you… are you all right?”
“Who are you?” Maxie demanded.
May and Max huddled close together, frightened. They were foolish, but they had enough sense to stay out of the way.

Lance's lips curved up in a smile, as he held up a hand. The seas outside suddenly churned, as four Hyper Beams skewered through the room. The Magma team cried out as they were flung every which way, Ash and his companions not faring much better. Lance laughed again, as the ceiling began to collapse, but it tore outwards, revealing four dragons floating in the air.
Two Dragonair, a Gyarados, and an Aerodactyl… the rest of his team, save Dragonite and his Red Gyarados, who were with Clair in Blackthorn, training and breeding…

The dragons cocked their heads at their trainer quizzically. Yes, they knew that taking down Team Magma and Team Aqua was imperative, but… that strange sense of power… it was different from what they felt, and so much power, the only thing that came close was the Dragon Master ceremony but that was in December!
Lance whistled and Aerodactyl swooped down while his other three dragons fired Hyper Beams at anyone who got too close to their trainer, including Ash and his friends. Max and May tumbled overboard and Brock dived down to save them, while Maxie and his Grunts hurriedly ran for their airship, desperate to leave the rapidly sinking sub.
But he wouldn't let his precious one drown, oh no… he would keep him away and keep him safe, and leave him where he would never be hurt again. He inclined his head, and Gyarados nodded, diving into the water as his trainer sped towards Team Aqua's hideout, the two Dragonair following.

Ash gasped for air as they surfaced, before realizing what they were perched on. It was a Gyarados, but it didn't look angry…
Pikachu spluttered and shook himself, before settling back atop Ash's cap. Max and May were barely dazed, though Brock was frowning.
“This is Lance's Gyarados, isn't it?” He asked.
Ash nodded. “Yes.”
“But… why would he do this?” May asked.
Max nodded. “First he attacks us, and then he saves us? What's going on?”
“I think it has something to do with the Blue Orb.” Brock's eyebrows knitted together, before he nodded. “That has to be it.”
“What do you mean, Brock?”
“Well, think about it Ash. The Blue Orb is supposed to be able to control a legendary pokémon, right? What if… what if it can also take control of whoever it touches?”
“You mean Lance? But he was wearing gloves!” Ash protested, surprised he had noticed such an insignificant detail.
“Maybe something like that doesn't matter.” Max put in. “But wherever he's going, Gyarados is probably taking us to the same place.”

The next moment, all of them gaped as the Gyarados turned its head back towards them and nodded, before speeding off again.
“I hope he's all right.” Ash murmured.
“I know.” Brock maintained his composure, though inside he was shaking. If even a member of the Elite Four like Lance could be possessed, then…
How would they be able to stop him?
At least his pokemon seemed fine, though he wasn't completely sure.

Lance nodded as he and Aerodactyl landed atop Team Aqua's sub. “Shh, shh… we will free you now, precious one…”
Aerodactyl's wings glinted, even in the pouring rain, for they were made of solid rock razor-sharp, slashing through metal easily.
Kyogre was out there. Kyogre would flood the land, and though that would give his pretty dragons more space to live, and perhaps destroy those humans, what of the land pokémon?
So they had to help.

They dropped down into the containment chamber, where Groudon still slumbered, poor petrified almost-dragon of earth, and Lance smirked disquietly as blades of red energy glittered on his fingertips, before the shackles fell.
“Wake up…” He crooned sweetly, as the legendary opened his eyes. Seeing the Dragon Master, he laughed, a laugh that was almost a roar, and then Eruption blasted them both out, the Dragon Master laughing as he and Aerodactyl soared out behind Groudon.

Hooray for Youtube! I finally got to watch the Houen episodes with Lance today! *Squee* Yeah, it's far from perfect, but so many plotbunnies went crazy in my brain once I saw it. Yum! This is a vastly AU fic. *Grin*
… What kind of idiot goes undercover with only a Dragonite? Yeah, it's a pretty powerful pokémon, but still. His Hakuryuu would have been so useful, especially if it was Manga! Lance
… Yeah, I've kind of replaced Anime! Lance with Manga! Lance… once he gets possessed, all of his dorky nature goes out the window…

So, where does the title come from? Well…this poem!

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice. (Robert Frost)
