Chapter 2- Jadeite and Rei

“Oh!” a bored Rei sighed. “I can’t believe Grandpa had me
working as a fortune teller again.” She adjusted her veil as she sat
in her tent at the Fuku Fuku Department Store. “At least no one knows
about this, except Usagi. And if she tells anyone, she’ll lose her
odangoes!”
The curtain parted, and she sat up straight. “Yes, come
in,” she said in a low quiet voice. “Please be seated.” She indicated
the chair opposite the table with its crystal ball and herself. It
was very dim in the tent so Rei focused on who was sitting. Her eyes
widened in surprise as she saw her boyfriend, Jared (Jadeite) sitting
before her!

“I’m concerned over a girl,” he began. “A girl I love. A
few days ago, I tried to talk to her about a new career opportunity
for me. I have been teaching karate for years, and because of my
professional training, I was offered a job as a bodyguard for some
important politician.”
Rei remembered the conversation, or rather, the heated
disagreement about whether Jared should accept the job or not. “Is it
because she worries over your safety?” she asked, using her low
voice.

“At first, I thought it was that,” he said. He then made a
sad face and continued, “But I remember that she hated the world of
politics. It took away her father, it caused her mother loneliness
and death, and before she met me, it took a man, Mr. Kaido, away from
her. Naturally, I assumed she would not want a future with someone
who will associate with politics.” He then took a deep breath. “I
guess being a bodyguard to a politician will take me away from her.
But I won’t let it happen!” He leaned forward and placed his hands on
the table. “I won’t let it! She’s everything to me! I see myself with
her in the future, maybe even having a family, and helping her
achieve her dreams.”

He slumped back in his chair, looking defeated. Rei could
feel her heart bursting with love at his confession. ‘He really wants
to be with me,’ she thought. “Then why do you not tell her in
person?” she asked. As he looked up, she gasped quietly as she took
in his look of fear.
“I’m scared,” he admitted. “That she won’t want to be with
me. She confessed to me that she could have married Mr. Kaido even if
he did go into politics. If she was willing to do that for him, then
I don’t have a chance.” He placed his hands in his head and ran his
fingers through his hair in frustration.

Tears fell from Rei’s eyes, and she quickly wiped them
away. After a long moment of concentration, she leaned forward to
stare in the crystal ball. Then she said, “The answer does not lie
here.”
Jared lifted up his head. “What?”
“You must approach her,” Rei suggested “And let her know
how you feel. Show her that you want her in your future. If you do
not, then you will never know.”
Jared blinked as he pondered this, then he got up and
bowed. “Thank you,” he said and left.

After she was done with the fortune telling for the day,
Rei changed into her temple clothes and headed back for the shrine.
When she arrived, she was astonished to see the most beautiful flower
decorations of her favorite white lily, Casablanca, all over the
place. As she approached the front steps, she saw Jared standing at
the top of the steps, also wearing his temple clothes. When she came
up the steps and faced him, he got down on one knee and opened a red
velvet jewelry box. Gasping, she saw the beautiful gold ring with the
jadeite for its stone.
“I love you,” he said. “I see you in the future with me,
having children, growing old together, my helping to make your dreams
come true, and all the good times in between. I’ll give up the job
for you to make you happy if…you’ll have me.” Jared took in a deep
breath. “Rei Hino, will you…marry me?”

Taking in his proposal and the look of hope on his face,
Rei burst into tears and draped herself all over him. As he held her,
she cried, “Forgive me! I was so scared of losing you to the world of
politics, but I was just being selfish. I know deep down that you’ll
always be by my side. So don’t give up on the job!” Straightening up,
she smiled lovingly down at him. “I love you, too, and yes…I will
marry you, Jared Etiedaj!”
Smiling as the happiest man on Earth, Jared placed the
ring on her, stood up, and hugged Rei tightly as if he would never
let her go. The two crows of the temple flew over, circling and
cawing, as the couple kissed.
