Chapter 3- Nephrite and Mako

“Oh, Neil (Nephrite)! This is so cool!” Excited, a seated
Mako straightened her black dress with the large red rose imprint on
the front. “Riding in a limousine is so thrilling!”
Chuckling, Neil, in his black tuxedo, pressed a button and
romantic music filled the car’s interior. “I thought this would help
you prepare for what the evening has to offer.”
“Oh, believe me! I’m so ready!” Mako squirmed happily in
her seat. ‘This is it!’ she thought. ‘He’s going to propose to me!
Why else would he want me in this dress? He knows that I would meet
my Prince Charming in this dress!’

“Well, here we are,” Neil announced as the limo pulled to
a stop. Stepping out, he turned and held out his hand to assist Mako
out. As she stood before him, she recognized the restaurant that she
once dined with Usagi, Mamoru, Chibi-Usa, and the girls. It was the
Rokuten Restaurant owned by the elderly lady Mayako Rokuten and the
famous French chef Ichiro Ohno. They were standing at the front
entrance and greeted as Mako and Neil entered.
Inside, Mako’s smile grew wider. There was no one in the
restaurant, and a beautiful table for two was prepared. ‘I knew it!’
she thought as Neil helped her into her seat. ‘He’s going to propose
tonight!’

After Neil sat in his own chair, Mayako described the menu
as Ichiro pushed out the food on a wheeling tray. They had a special
French dish, plus Mayako’s famous stew. And for dessert, a strawberry
shortcake. “Mako, I hope you don’t mind, but I followed your recipe
from the Yoshinokaw Tetsurou cooking show,” Mayako said, serving the
slices of cake.
“Oh!” Mako blushed. “I can’t believe you saw that episode!
It was really messy and embarrassing.”
“True, but I thought it was very funny and refreshing,”
replied Ichiro as he cleared the other dishes from the table.
“Especially when your friend Usagi used the baking powder instead of
the flower. Ha, ha! She certainly blew up a storm!”

“Mako, before we start dessert, there’s something I have
for you. And I hope it will make your dreams come true,” Neil said,
taking her left hand in his.
‘My left hand!’ she thought. ‘This is it!’ But then she
noticed that Mayako and Ichiro are still there, and she blushed. ‘I
expected a little privacy. Are they going to be witnesses?’
“Mako?” Neil stared at her, intently.
Forgetting everything around her, she stared back. “Yes?”
‘Oh, who cares?’ she thought. ‘He’s proposing to me. That’s what
counts!’
“Your dream to own a restaurant has come true.”
Mako blinked a few times. “Huh?”

Neil nodded to Ichiro who took out some papers to hand to
her. “I know it’s your dream to own a restaurant and cook to make
people happy,” Neil said. “Since they saw you on the cooking show,
Mr. Ohno and Ms. Rokuten knew you’d be perfect to take over for them
when they retire. So I helped them make the arrangements. They plan
to marry soon and travel all over the world. With you, they know the
restaurant will be in good hands.”
Mako bent her head so her bangs could hide her eyes. ‘He’s
not proposing?’ she thought, shocked. Her eyes watered with tears,
but she held them back. ‘How silly of me. I mean it was sweet of him
to make my dream come true, but I really hoped he would…’ Her
thoughts trailed off as she took a deep breath. “Thank you,” she
said, quietly, as she placed down the papers.

“Oh, I forgot the champagne!” Mayako turned to return to
the kitchen.
“I’ll give you a hand.” Ichiro followed, pushing back the
wheeling tray, full of dirty dishes.
Left alone, Neil looked at Mako with her head still bent
down. “I know you’re in shock of all this, but maybe this will make
you come down to Earth a bit,” he said.
As Mako raised her head sadly, she drew back, startled, as
she saw him holding out a green velvet jewelry box to her. Feeling a
new hope rise within her, she gingerly took it and opened. Giving a
happy gasp, she gazed at the gold ring with a nephrite for its stone.

Neil was already down on one knee before her. “The
restaurant also comes with a huge space to be made into a dancing
hall for parties and celebrations which gives me a better opportunity
to teach dancing here.” He smiled lovingly at her. “So I come with
the package.” Then he took her hand in his. “I love you, Makoto Kino.
Will you…marry me?”
‘He proposed!’ she thought, happily, as tears slid down
her cheeks. “Oh, yes…I will, and I love you, Neil Etirhpen!”
After he placed the ring on her, they leaned toward each
other, kissed, and then embraced.
Mayako and Ichiro watched them, discreetly from the
kitchen door, smiling. Holding hands, they clunk their champagne
glasses in a toast, and drank.
