Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Freedom or another prison ❯ A few months later ( Chapter 7 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Surge woke up two hours earlier than she normally would, completely nauseous.

Manic stepped into the bathroom. “Babe, are you okay?”

 Surge started vomiting.

Manic knelt down beside Surge and held her spines. He reached into the bedroom and picked up one of Surge’s headbands that had fallen off the desk the night before. He pulled her spines into the band and tied it.

 Surge gasped. “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it.” Manic said, getting up. He stepped over to the sink and soaked a wash cloth in cool water. He wrung out the water. “I’m guessing Starline didn’t take care of you when you were sick. Please don’t answer that. I don’t think I can handle hearing about him anymore.”

“I don’t feel like talking anyway.” Surge muttered.

Manic knelt down and gently wiped Surge’s face. “Aw, babe, I’m sorry.”

 “Thanks.” Surge muttered.

“I’d like to know what kind of bug this is.” Surge said as Manic tossed the washcloth into the hamper. “It’s been a little over a week and I haven’t gotten any better.”

Manic bit his lip. “Maybe this is morning sickness.”

 “What?” Surge asked.

 “Morning sickness.” Manic replied.

“What the heck is that?” Surge asked.

Manic stared wide eyed at Surge.

 “What?” Surge asked

“No one explained what that is or anything to you?” Manic asked.

 “No.” Surge replied.

“If it really is morning sickness, then you’re pregnant.” Manic said.

 “What?” Surge shrieked.

“I didn’t say you were, babe.” Manic said, rubbing her shoulder. “Just that you could be. Don’t get worked up over probably nothing.”

Surge shook her head. “No, I can’t be.” She hyperventilated. “We’ve only been married a few months.”

Manic hugged Surge. “It’s gonna be okay, Babe.” He said softly. He rubbed her back. “It’s okay. You won’t do this alone.”

Manic rubbed Surge’s back as she cried it out on his shoulder.

Some time later, Surge finally stopped crying. She eased away from Manic. “You’re right. Maybe it’s just a bad cold and I’m overreacting.”

“Eh… that’s possible.” Manic replied. He looked at Surge. “Let’s see… you’re a tenrec, you should be showing a little already if you are.”

 Surge shrugged. “I guess.”

Manic got up and helped Surge up.

He eased around to look at Surge from the side. “Yeah, it looks like you have a slight bump.” He said, rubbing her slightly swollen belly. “That tank top used to fit better than that.”

Surge looked at herself in the mirror and sighed. Her once slightly loose tank top was snug and barely fit over her slightly swollen belly.

“Well, at least we can see the doc quickly.” Manic said. “That’s one good thing about being royalty.”

“That’s about all it’s good for.” Surge muttered. She laid her arms on the counter.

Manic rubbed Surge’s shoulders. “Sonic will dissolve the monarchy as soon as he’s in charge. We’re all buying our time until then.”

 Surge nodded.

Manic half smiled. “I’m sorry, I know it’s a lot to take in.” He said, rubbing Surge’s belly. “But I’m here for you. We’ll have a lot of help with our baby. I’m sure you’re scared and I’m here if you need to talk.”

 Surge hugged Manic.

Manic rubbed Surge’s back. “It’s gonna be okay, babe.” He whispered. “It just happened a lot earlier than we planned.”

Manic finally pulled himself away from Surge. “Okay, babe, we’ll take our showers.” He said. “Then, I’ll take you to the doctor.”

 Surge nodded.

“Go ahead and take your shower first.” Manic said. “I’ll… I can shower later. I have a few things to do.”

 “Fine.” Surge muttered.

 Manic left the room.

*

Manic sighed. “I can’t believe no one explained any of this to her before.” He muttered. He picked up his phone and called Shadow since he didn’t know who else to call to rant about how Surge was pretty much neglected.

“I can’t believe he didn’t have anyone try to explain that to her.” Manic thought. “Hmm, something’s fishy with that Starline guy anyway.”

Shadow finally answered. “Why are you bothering me this early in the morning?”

“How much do you know about Starline?” Manic asked.

“Enough to say I never trusted him.” Shadow replied.

Manic flopped down on his bed. “Why didn’t you say something before?”

“Your mother said it wasn’t my concern.” Shadow said. “Just hers, yours, and Sonic’s. I didn’t want to stress you out even more and neither of them would listen.”

“Well, I’ll listen.” Manic replied. “It’s weird he adopted her just to use her as a pawn. Why did he even bother to adopt Kit? Surge didn’t have a good life there and I’m sure it’s the same deal for Kit.”

 “Hmm.” Shadow muttered.

 “What?” Manic asked.

“I think she’s a spy.” Shadow replied. “Her and Kit. He’s awfully interested in Tails’ tech when he’s here.”

Manic bit his lip. “Nah, I think they’re too innocent for that.”

Shadow sighed. “You’ve fallen for her already.”

Manic drummed his fingers on the bed. “Yeah, but-”

“Nothing.” Shadow said. “You’re too blind to see things now. Listen, start keeping your distance as best as you can so we-”

“I can’t do that now.” Manic replied.

Shadow groaned. “You and your brother are the two biggest idiots I’ve ever met.” He said. “Your-”

“Shadow!” Sonia scolded him in the background.

“Do what you want.” Shadow said. “Tails and I will get to the bottom of this if Sonic hasn’t warped his brain. Maybe your mom will finally listen since the treaties are finalized.”

 Shadow hung up.

Manic thought about the conversation. “She can’t be a spy.” He thought. “Maybe Starline has ulterior motives and Kit is forced into spying, but she’s not a spy. I don’t think she’d risk getting pregnant if she was. That’s pretty far to go to spy on us or keep her cover up.”

Surge, wearing a pair of sweatpants and an old sweatshirt, finally came out of the bathroom.

“There’s my girl.” Manic said, getting up. “Are you ready to go?”

 Surge slowly nodded.

Manic walked Surge to the door. “It’s gonna be okay.” He said, holding her hand. “Maybe it’s a false alarm.”

*

Surge and Manic, both with thousand yard stares, walked back into their room and sat down on their beds.

“I didn’t think the triplets thing was genetic.” Manic said. He glanced at Surge. “I’m sorry. I guess it should’ve occurred to me.”

“It’s not all your fault.” Surge replied. “I just hope three is your limit.”

Manic sighed in relief. “I’m glad you agree.” He said. He hugged Surge. “It’s gonna be okay. We’ll have a ton of help and we can definitely afford them.”

 Surge nodded.

“I can’t imagine how overwhelmed you are.” Manic said. “You get the hardest parts; I’m just here to try to make this as easy as possible.”

“Yeah, it is.” Surge replied. “I need a nap.”

“Me too.” Manic said, laying down.

 Surge laid down.

 Manic fell asleep immediately.

Surge sighed. “Oh, sure, he can sleep peacefully.” She thought. “I have to worry about Starline and how he’ll use this as part of his scheme.”

Surge pulled her phone out of her pocket. “Should I text Kit?” She thought. “No, Starline reads his messages. I have to wait until I can check in and try to talk to Kit privately.”

Manic woke up. “Oh, man, I’ve never dozed off like that before.” He said. He yawned. “Well, unless I’m sick.”

“Babe?” Manic asked. “Oh, I’d wait to tell your… family. It’s too early. I’m not telling my family yet.”

“I was gonna check on Kit.” Surge replied.

“He’s old enough to make his own living decisions, right?” Manic asked.

 “Not in Tashistan.” Surge replied.

Manic groaned. “Man, I hate leaving him there.” He said. “It sounds awful over there.”

“I’ll try to talk him into leaving.” Surge replied. She checked her phone. “I can’t call him now anyway. It’s almost night and he’s doing some kind of dignitary thing according to his last message.”

“Ask him if he wants to live here the next time you speak to him.” Manic said. He kissed Surge’s forehead. “Hey, I know it’s not much, but at least we can give our kids the life you didn’t have.”

 “Thanks.” Surge replied.

Manic stroked Surge’s spines. “It gives you an excuse to play with Legos and super soakers.”

 Manic and Surge laughed.

 “Thanks, Cute stuff.” Surge said.

Manic slid his hand into Surge’s hand. “I’m just glad I get to give you a better life, Babe.” He replied. “You deserve it.”

 “What?” Surge asked.

Manic sighed. “I don’t know what Starline or whatever said to you, but it’s garbage.” He replied. “You deserve to be treated with respect.”

 Surge sniffled.

Manic held Surge. “Aww, babe, I didn’t mean to make you cry.” He said as Surge buried her face in his chest. “Are those happy tears?”

 Surge nodded.

Manic smiled as he rubbed Surge’s side.
