Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Freedom or another prison ❯ Trouble ( Chapter 9 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Manic stroked Surge’s spines as she slept.

Their three day old babies snuggled in a pile beside Surge. They whimpered in their sleep.

Manic kissed Surge’s forehead. “Love you.” He whispered.

 Surge woke up and yawned.

“Aw, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” Manic said.

“Huh?” Surge asked. “How long have I been out?”

“A few hours.” Manic replied. “The babies are exhausted too. They’ve been asleep since their last feeding.”

A ring portal opened in their room.

Manic sat up, bumping Surge’s head in the process.

 Surge groaned.

 “Sorry, babe.” Manic said.

Kit, hyperventilating, stepped through the portal. “Surge.”

Surge propped herself up on her pillows. “Kit? What happened?”

“Starline… gonna invade… Mobotropolis… with Robotnik.” Kit said, catching his breath. He took a deep breath, then exhaled loudly. “I finally had a chance to escape. He’s gonna roboticize Manic and the triplets. Everyone else is looking at a death sentence.”

“He said he’d spare them!” Surge shrieked.

The babies woke up and started crying.

Surge tried to calm the babies down again.

“What?” Manic asked. “Wait. You knew?”

Surge glanced up at Manic. “I can explain.”

“I get it.” Manic said, narrowing his eyes. “This whole thing was a way to get information out of us and kill my family. You think I’d be happy that you tried to spare me and the babies and that I’d forget the rest of my family? How could you do this to us?!”

“Manic, please hear her out.” Kit replied. “She does love you.”

“You all must have a weird way to show it in Tashistan.” Manic sneered.

Surge looked at Kit. “Calm them down.”

Kit eagerly stepped over and started tending to the babies. “Hi, nice to meet you.” He said softly as he petted the babies’ backs.

Surge glared at Manic. “You think I wanted this?” She asked. She took off her rings. “You know enough about Starline to know I had no choice.”

“But you could’ve told me all of this.” Manic replied. “You’ve had about five months to tell me.”

Surge held up the rings. “These were used to shock me.” She said, shoving them at Manic. “If I did anything wrong, he’d shock me at best and threaten to kill me and Kit at worst. This was gonna happen anyway. I was gonna tell you as soon as Kit had enough info to take Starline and Robotnik out. I didn’t think Kit would wait this long.”

“I wanted to come earlier, but I was held captive.” Kit protested.

“I don’t need this right now, Manic.” Surge continued. “I just had the babies a few days ago.”

Manic held the rings up. “Then why didn’t you take these off before?”

Surge did a double take at the rings. “I… I’ve never been able to do that before.”

Kit held up the flash drives. “I got everything you’ll need.” He said. “Manic, we lived in fear every day. I finally had an opportunity to escape with what you all will need. Please don’t be angry at her. You have no idea what Starline put us through.”

“I’m sorry.” Surge said. “I should’ve said something, but I didn’t know what to do. I swear the rings must’ve stopped working recently because I’ve never been able to take them off before.”

Surge motioned to the Kit and the triplets, then to Manic. “I care more about keeping you all safe than anything.” She said, her eyes and spines lighting up. “I didn’t want to sell your family out, but they’re not my priority like you and the kids are.”

 “And me.” Kit added.

“Yeah, him too.” Surge said, her eyes and spines glowing brighter.

“You have similar powers as my bro, Shadow, and Knux.” Manic replied. “You couldn’t do anything to stop them?”

“What are you talking about?” Surge asked.

Kit’s eyes widened. “Surge, he’s right.” He replied. “I’ve never seen you do that before.”

Surge glanced at herself in the mirror. “What?”

 The lights started flickering.

“Power down.” Manic said, grabbing Surge’s shoulders. “Calm yourself, Babe.”

Surge exhaled slowly. Her eyes and spines stopped glowing.

Manic hugged Surge. “It’s okay, I believe you.” He said. “I’m sorry.”

“Bro?” Sonic called as he knocked on the door. “Is that you or Surge making the lights flicker?”

Manic got up and let Sonic in. “We have a situation.” He said, shutting the door as soon as Sonic stepped inside. “Starline is in league with Robotnik.”

“I brought all of their defense codes.” Kit said, handing a couple of flash drives to Sonic. “We can take them down quickly.”

“So are you and Surge spies or…?” Sonic asked.

 “Sorta.” Surge replied.

“Starline forced us to spy on Mobotropolis, but we’ve never been on his side and waited until we were free before we did anything.” Kit added.

“Shut up, Drippy.” Surge said, giving Kit a dirty look.

Sonic glanced at Manic. “Manic, get the babies and follow me.” He said. “We’ll have your marriage annulled.”

Surge caught Manic’s arm before he could reach for the triplets. “Manic?”

“I know we didn’t love each other to start with, but I fell for you.” Manic said. “Did I really grow on you or was it all an act?”

“I really love you.” Surge replied. “I wouldn’t try to save you and the kids if I didn’t.”

Manic nodded. “I love you too.”

Surge hugged Manic. “Please give me a chance to make things right.”

 “Sure, babe.” Manic said.

Kit hurried over and handed Sonic the drives. “Give these to Tails.” He said. “He’ll know what to do.”

 Sonic looked at Manic. “Bro?”

 “I believe her.” Manic said.

“Have Kit help you take them to the emergency shelter, Manic.” Sonic replied. “Settle them in, then meet us in the warroom.”

 Sonic raced off.

Manic helped Surge up. “Kit, get the carrier.” He said, motioning to the carrier on the dresser.

Kit got the carrier and stepped over. He carefully picked up the babies, one by one, then picked up the carrier.

Manic picked up Surge. “Follow me.”

“Wait.” Kit said. “Surge, take off your ear cuffs.”

Surge took them off and broke them.

“Good; those were cameras.” Kit said.

 Surge grimaced. “Ugh. Should’ve known.”

Manic led Surge and Kit to the shelter.

*

Manic made his way to the war room after getting everyone settled into the shelter.

Tails was typing away on his computer as Sonic finished briefing everyone.

Shadow was leaning against the wall, giving Manic a death glare. “I tried to tell you all.”

Manic sighed. “Don’t rub it in.”

Tails grinned. “It doesn’t matter.” He said. “I can override and shut down everything they got, leaving them sitting ducks for you all. I just sent you all the locations on my defense app.”

Sally and Sonia joined the group.

“Sonia and I will take out Robotnik, Manic and Sonic will handle Starline.” Shadow said. “Knuckles is in charge of the army. Sally can keep the bots down remotely while Tails coordinates the army. Whoever’s done first, helps out the other. Who’s guarding Kit and Surge?”

“Mom.” Sonic replied. “Surge isn’t going to feel like doing anything.”

“Besides, Kit gave us legitimate codes and several files on their abuse he kept a record of.” Tails said. “I think they’re telling the truth and were forced into this.”

Shadow leaned away from the wall. “Let’s go.”

*

Surge made sure the babies were asleep, then turned to face Kit. “Do me a huge favor.”

 “What?” Kit asked.

“Watch the babies, don’t let anyone mess with them.” Surge replied. “Not even Manic, okay? I have to handle this; I don’t know if everyone believes us yet and won’t try to take my kids from me.”

Kit pinned his ears back. “Are you sure?” He asked. “You probably shouldn’t fight right now. You’re still recovering.”

“I’ll be fine.” Surge said, ruffling Kit’s fur. She left the shelter. “This is personal.”

*

Sonic and Manic caught up with Starline in the palace courtyard.

“Ah, so you think you can stop me?” Dr. Starline asked.

“Well, we’re taking out your bots and Ro-butt-nik as we speak.” Manic said.

Sonic spin dashed a nearby robot, only to be grabbed by a drone with a large claw. “Manic, a little help.”

Dr. Starline shocked Manic with his gauntlet, then pinned him down with his boot. “Hmm… you’re more trouble than you’re worth.” He said. “I think I’ll roboticize your brother instead and let you have his death sentence. He’d make an excellent robot.”

“Manic!” Sonic yelled as he fought harder.

Manic struggled to get away from Starline as a drone floated closer to his head.

Something spin dashed Starline and the drone.

 Manic scrambled to his feet.

The claw drone finally dropped Sonic.

 “Thanks, Shadow.” Sonic said.

Surge landed. “Not Shadow, but you’re welcome.”

“Babe, we got this.” Manic said. “You need to rest.”

Dr. Starline got to his feet, then pressed a button on his gauntlet. He furrowed his brow as Surge didn’t even flinch.

“How did they override it?” Dr. Starline muttered as he checked his gauntlet’s system.

Surge glared at Starline. “I took the rings off.”

“How?” Dr. Starline asked. “You weren’t supposed to be able to.”

“Guess they quit working.” Surge said, cracking her knuckles. “Heard you were gonna roboticize my family.”

Manic cracked his knuckles as well. “I’ll handle this, Babe.”

Surge punched Starline. “You treated us like dirt for years and expected us to respect you?”

Starline struggled to get back on his feet. “You-”

“Manic treated me better than you ever had the day to be and you think I’ll stand by and let you do that to him and our kids?!” Surge yelled as she kicked Starline.

Sonic stepped over. “Okay Surge, I get it.” He said. “Just let us handle it. You need to rest and you already beat him like a piñata anyway.”

Manic stepped over, then gently pulled Surge away by her shoulders. “Proud of ya, Babe.” He said, walking her out of the room as Sonic handcuffed Starline. “You handled your business. Who’s watching the babies anyway?”

“Kit.” Surge muttered. She stopped walking and slumped against Manic.

Manic picked Surge up. “You overdid it.” He said. “I’ll get the doc to check you as soon as we get you back to bed.”

Surge weakly clung to Manic. “Thanks, Cute Stuff.”

Manic kissed Surge. “You’re welcome, Babe.”

*

Surge woke up from her nap.

 “You feeling okay?” Manic asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Surge replied. “What did the doc say? Where’s the kids?”

“You’re okay, but he said you needed to take it easy.” Manic said. “Robotnik and Starline were arrested. Kit soaked Starline with this hydropack or whatever he called it. It was hilarious.”

Surge smirked. “I would’ve loved to see that.”

“Maybe it’s on our security system.” Manic said, sitting beside Surge. “I’ll ask Tails later.”

 “Where’s the babies?” Surge asked.

Manic motioned to the other side of the bed. “In the crib.”

Surge glanced over at the babies, who were fast asleep. “So how does your family feel?”

“Ma and Shadow think you and Kit are telling us the truth.” Manic said. “Tails and Sonic are going through the files as we speak; they seem to believe you. You two are going to be pardoned for your involvement. Ma’s not annulling our marriage.”

 “That’s a relief.” Surge replied.

Manic stroked Surge’s spines. “Get some rest.” He said. “It’s finally over. You don’t have to worry about those guys anymore.”

Surge settled into her bed. “Can you put on a movie for me?”

Manic turned the tv on. “You ever seen Birdemic?”

“Another one of those ridiculous movies?” Surge asked. “Eh, that’s fine.”

 Manic started the movie.

Surge fell asleep during the first few minutes of the movie.
