Step Three: Keep Your Chin Down

As Kurama trudged home from a long day of school, he thought about all the things that Myoko had said to him. Basically, what she had said was that he could either rip Hiei's heart out by telling him straight forward that he doesn't return the fire demons feelings for him, or he could trick Hiei into confessing his love for him then rip his heart out. Still, he had to keep in mind the fact that he wasn't one hundred percent sure that Hiei felt that way for him. He sighed. None of this would have happened if he were in a male body, or better yet in his Yoko form. He doubted that Hiei would fall for him if he were still in his true form.

Hiei leapt from branch to branch as he followed the red headed beauty as she made her way home. Hiei couldn't help but notice the fact that Kurama's dainty shoulders were slumped as she walked down the street, a sure sign of a bad day. However, even with the air of a foul mood hanging over her, Kurama was still extremely beautiful.

He shook his head violently at the thought, doing his best to knock it out of his head. He was no better than the boys at her school. No. He was much worse, because he knew something about her that they didn't know. He knew that underneath the body of a young human girl, beat the heart of a ruthless, male Yoko.

Still, he couldn't help but think of Kurama as a girl. He would constantly refer to him as her when he thought about him. There were even times when he would slip and call Kurama a she out loud. This would often result in strange looks and teasing from Kuwabara and Yusuke. Kurama, however, would usually just ignore it and for this he was grateful.

He was slipping and he knew it. It was beginning to get harder and harder for him to hide his feeling for the fox. He once found himself trying to hold her hand. Luckily he stopped himself before he could touch her.

But who could blame him? Kurama, weather he wanted to admit it or not, was at times quite feminine. There are times when it seems to Hiei that Kurama is actually flirting with him. However, he constantly reminds himself that it's likely all in his head. He had heard that Yokos were very sexual creatures, but it was very unlikely to him that Kurama was gay.

Still, he wasn't the only one of the tentai members to be hypnotized by Kurama's beauty. If he recalled correctly the first time Kuwabara had laid eyes on Kurama (thinking that he was a girl of course) he'd nearly killed himself trying to impress her, much like how he acts with Yukina. Luckily for Hiei, he had the pleasure of crushing the moron's little fantasy world, by informing him that Kurama was in fact a male Yoko trapped in a human girl's body. The look on his face was priceless. A mix of horror, disgust, and disappointment.

Hiei even remembers Kurama once telling him, that after confessing to Yusuke about his true nature, the young sprite detective took it upon himself to see if what Kurama had said about being in a girl's body were true. He'd always feel a mix of anger and envy when ever he thought about that.

There were times when Hiei thought about giving up this charade of his and coming clean with Kurama, telling her once and for all that he loved her, but the very thought of the pain and humiliation that would most certainly follow was always too great.

I suppose that I'll just have to enjoy my one sided love, he thought as he watched the red head open the door to her home and shut it behind her.
