CHAPTER 16: ADVENT GUARD

Kuwabara placed a vanilla milkshake on the bench beside Mitarai and took a seat.
"Thanks. So, what did little big man say, Kuwabara?"
"He grumbled and bitched but he'll get the psychics in position to take down and rebuild the barrier when you give the word. Also, he's throwing you a going away party after the invasion so when you to pick up your last check so be sure to look surprised."
Mitarai let out a disgusted grunt. "A surprise party....on the bright side there's a good chance I'll be killed before I have to go."
"I'll hold off on getting you a present then."

While Mitarai stared at the maps Kaito made for hours on end Kuwabara kept the staff of the restaraunt he
sat in off of his back by ordering a meal every hour.
"You know....I just noticed you've been around a lot more lately. What happened to your job?"
"Got fired. No big deal, though. I had more important stuff to do anyway. Like taking care of you and
Hannah."

Mitarai braced himself to ask his next question and for the answer he knew he'd receive. "How is Hannah
doing?"
"Um....she's still in some pain and doesn't like to leave the couch much. I have to do a lot of stuff for her
now. It's, uh....great, man! I don't like that she got hurt or anything, but waiting on her all the time is tons
of fun. I feel needed. It's weird but cooking for her and fetching stuff for her makes me feel like a real man."
The feeling of genuine happiness for his friend eclipsed any traces of jealousy that might have remained in
Mitarai's mind.
"What are you wasting time here for? Demons are invading in a night or two, depending on the weather. Go
spongebathe your woman while there's still time."

After another hour of staring at his map Mitarai looked at his watch and saw that he had burned through
most of the afternoon and thought of nothing new. He soon gave up and stepped outside to guage the
weather.
"Looks like it won't rain tonight," he said to no one in particular. "Good."

Mitarai turned and pulled out his squirt gun when he felt something strike the back of his neck. His sense of
preservation died down when he saw Sniper holding a handful of marbles while Amanuma chuckled beside
him. While he knew he was in no trouble Mitarai pulled out his second gun and squirted Sniper and
Amanuma simultaneously in the crotch.
"Real mature, Mitarai."
"So says the guy with a Mario tattoo on his ass."
"Shut up. It part of the Donkey Kong mural on my back."

.....

"It just dawned on me that we are such losers." Asato said.
Yana and Kaito looked at one another and shrugged indifferently.
"Looks like someone is having trouble connecting Gong Li and Harrison Ford," Yana said smugly. "Come
on, I can do it in like two steps."
"I just think that we should spend this time training instead of playing six degrees of separation." Asato
resigned himself to his fate and knew that going off by himself to train would only be a sign of weakness to
his friends. "Fine. If I have to prove myself to you jerks, that's okay. Harrison Ford was in The Devi's Own
with Ruben Blades who was in Chinese Box with Gong Li. There. Can we do something constructive
now?"

Asato lead Kaito and Yana to the gym where he pointed to a mat where he and Yana could spar. "Yu?"
"I'll turn on my territory. The taboo phrase will be 'I am not a loser'." Yu then summoned his psychic
territory where no violent actions were allowed and the taboo was not to be spoken. "You two losers may
now fight."

Yanagisiwa and Asato looked at eachother then at Yu and then back at eachother while waiting for
someone to initiate the sparring session.
"I'm not scared, Yana."
"Me either."

Another minute passed before deciding that since neither were scared that training was not a necessity.
"Hey, Yana. I bet you can't connect Takeshi Kaneshiro and Woody Allen."
"You're on."

.....

After the time it took Kuwabara to convince Hannah that bathing her would be in her best interest and
involve less moving he found it surpisingly unerotic.
"Kaz, am I pretty?"
Kuwabara knew Hannah well enough that after brutal fights or after too much to drink she would eventually
question some aspect of her femmininity.
"I think I made you too many margaritas and you've been fighting too much. Lift your arm, please."
"....This isn't the tequila and pain talking. Come on, I know I'm not prettier than your ex, Yukina. Hell, I
might even be a step below Hiei."

Kuwabara dropped the sponge he used and climbed fully clothed into the tub and wrapped his arms and legs
around Hannah. Instead of offering words of placation he held her until the water turned tepid, then cold
and only opened his mouth to suggest they spar.

"Kaz, I hurt, it's too dark and I can't see for shit."
Kuwabara fired a shard of spirit energy into the lone lamp in the park illuminating them. "No, now you can't
see for shit. Get ready."

"Is this your lame attempt to get me over my self-consciousness?" Hannah asked just before a blunted spirit
sword hit her between her ribs.
"Is it working?" Kuwabara asked before he kicked Hannah in her previously wounded ribs and onto her
back.
"Believe it or not but I'm not feeling too attractive right now."
Kuwabara sat down at Hannah's side. "You look good, though. You always look good when you fight.
Winning or losing you get this kinda glow around you when you're fighting. Right now at this very
moment you are the most beautiful woman in the world."
Hannah knew instinctively when Kuwabara stretched the truth to comfort her but sensed nothing but
honesty in his voice.
"You broke my ribs you fuckin' jerk."

As Kuwabara carried her home on his back, shuffling his feet instead of stepping so as not to jostle
Hannah's broken ribs, she rested her head on his shoulder and despite the pain she felt herself delving into
sleep.
Most of her life Hannah had considered words to be cheap compared to one's actions. She knew she could
read just about any emotion into an act. As a result she never verbally expressed that she loved Kuwabara.
Dispatching her fast and telling her the truth, she realized was just his way of communicating in her
language.
Before falling asleep she tried to mumble the words: "I love you" but only manged a barely audible
grumble.

Kuwabara paused in his shuffling and suddenly felt like the most important man in the world.
