She seems to love giving you reasons to fall on the fallouts, selfishly loving to fan your flames of self-hate
She's been that monkey on your back for so long, you barely notice the weight
Of her digging her nails in your back for purchase—she's been there forever
Oh, great…

When you're looking at the woman in the mirror, primping and tweaking in vain
Tell me, `cause I'm a little lost, how much have her words really cost
To realize, because she said it, you're crying again?

How many times has she crushed you? Made you doubt all potential within?
So quickly to group you with life's “Out crowd”…so hesitant to fathom you with the “In”

It's not that she's inept in giving you words to lift you out of your woes
It's that, when she tries, you get this…look in your eyes
Like you'll never be able to live up to you preconceived dreams, so you fret and you sigh
And you cast down your face to the floor
Any courage to fight her, no more
Is it so fascination, his land near your toes?
You surely stare there enough—is she down there, too?
Omnipresent, on your back, and perhaps on your shoes
or, maybe, in your mind? Have you ever stopped to think she implanted that far?
Sometimes I wonder… Do you really know who you are?

I so hate her vernacular
And, daily, I contemplate slapping her
But, logic holds me back. Hmm, wonder why?
Because…there's more for you to see than just what comes to you from me
What I say out my mouth, from my eyes, from my heart

Because she said, for so many years, regardless of your inner fears
You ignored her when she's always been there

So close
Too close
You guys really need to talk

After a good hug, I turn you around to the mirror

Do you see her?

Hope you figure it out soon…
