I Want You to Love Me

As I think about you, songs drift through my head

Like that old Marvin Gaye joint, I remember it said:

I want you—the right way

I want you

But, I want you to want me, too

I can, now, relate to that song—it's more than just a rhythm and a tune

It breaks down the feeling of wanting someone the way that I want you

I want you to love me the way I've never had love before

I want a love that is love; that's always giving more and more

And more often that not, I furrow my brow

In silent contemplation of gaining your heart somehow

But, as the late Phyllis Hyman sung:

I can't make you love me if you don't

You can't make your heart feel something it won't

You may never feel, in any way for me, the way I do for you

But, is it a crime I still want you and I want you to want me, too?

Oh, when you hold me, a hug is more that a squeeze

It connects me, for a moment, with the man of my dreams

And, as both our hearts beat together, I feel such a sensation

It runs all through my being and I lose concentration

So, for that one moment, I feel I'm home in your arms

And that, in you, I have a man that would never do me harm

~sigh~

But, eventually, the euphoria ends as you loosen your embrace

Then I remember we're only friends so I quickly fix my face

But, I think you know how I feel about you

And you know that I know that you know I love you

Damn, I said it—I love you! Oh, what a day it would be

If you could return the notion and say you love me

But, life's not a daydream and reality bites

I guess hope is all I have and I'm hoping alright

Can we be on the wings of love and let our love fly?

I just want you to love me—let's give it a try
