Leia didn't come out of her room all night, and she didn't get up for school the next morning. "Leia?" Gabe called as Rio stood at the front door. "We are going to school now. Do you want Rio to come back and get you later?"
Nothing.
Gabe bit his lip and looked over at Rio who shrugged slowly. "I'll call you later, ok?" He left her there in her room and walked down to the car with Rio. Taking one last look up at the apartment, he got into the car and they went to school.
Patrick's right eye was all but swollen shut. His brother had one hell of a right fist. Like an idiot he was harboring a convicted villain in his house. Still, he was family. There was nothing more he could do but to help him.
He nodded when he saw Rio and Gabe. "She ditching again?"
They looked him over but said nothing about his eye. "Yeah," Gabe said quickly. Taking Rio's hand they started for their new Language class.
Well that was certainly descriptive. With one more sigh, he went about his day, trying not to let his thoughts wander.
Gabe called at break but Leia didn't answer. He called at lunch, still she didn't answer. At the end of the day, he called her before getting into the car. She picked up and he froze. "Leia..."
"I'm...on a plane," she said.
Gabe's eyes grew wide. "What...why?"
"I'm going to Italy to see my mother's grave. I'll be back on the weekend. I left a credit card for you on the bar," she said softly.
"Alright...will you call when you land?"
"Yes. Don't worry, ok? I'll be home soon. I just need to get away for a few days. You and Rio could use some time alone."
"Yeah, sure," he said, trying not to sound worried.
"I have to go, the lady is looking at me weird. Says I need to get off the phone."
"Ok, call me soon."
"Yeah, I will."
Gabe listened to her hang up then looked at Rio. "She's going to Italy."
Patrick called their house, stuck at the school once again. "Hey, Rio. It's me. I think I have eggshells stuck in my radiator..."
Rio looked at Gabe. "Mr. McClain is stuck at school. I have to fix his car."
"Don't offer information," Gabe warned. "I want Leia to be stress free when she comes home and washed of what happened in the last week."
He nodded as he headed out. Driving back to the school, he parked next to Patrick and looked under the hood. Instantly he started working on flushing his radiator.
"Thanks for the help," he sighed. "I didn't realize that eggs could be so dangerous to a car."
"It's bad for the paint too. Leia knew that," he said as he poured water over then engine.
"Yeah, well I got it off before it ruined the paint," he said. There was a pause as he looked over at Rio. "So how is Leia doing today?"
"Wouldn't know," he said shrugging.
He quirked an eyebrow at this. "Haven't you seen her today?"
"Nope."
"Is...she okay?" He was suddenly worried. Had she left? Did she even tell them? Would she tell them? Why would she go?
"Like I said, I wouldn't know," Rio said and finished up. He closed the hood and started wiping his hands on a rag.
"Oh.... Well, wherever she is I hope that she is okay. Thank you for your help, Rio. I know I am not your favorite person, but I do greatly appreciate your assistance. I do not know much about vehicles."
"Maybe you should learn," he said as he got in his car.
"Yes, I guess I should." He leaned against his car, watching him drive away. What was he to do now. Go home to his drunk brother? No thanks. Might as well go check on Rachel. Perhaps he should pay her a visit as well....
Hours and hours later, Leia called to say she was fine, in a hotel and being treated like a Goddess. She talked to both Rio and Gabe on speaker about how large of a house her father had in Italy and how she wouldn't sleep in it because it was where her mother died. She would go to the church where her mother was buried on Friday then would get a plane and head home. They stayed on the phone for hours.
"Rachel?" Patrick pushed his head, inside, watching a red headed beauty bustle about the kitchen. The sound of children running through the house was the first thing that caught his attention. He was immediately tackled by three boys.
"Uncle Patrick!"
"Hah! Easy, guys," he laughed as he hugged them. "Is your mum too busy to talk to me?"
"Not at all brother dearest. Have a seat and a meal. You're nothing but skin and bones!"
"Yes ma'am," he laughed. "How is Richard doing?"
"Oh, he's fine. Works hard all day, but he comes home happy." She reached up and grabbed his face, looking at his eye. "I see you're still a sap. You're letting him stay with you, aren't you?"
"Aye," he admitted.
"He's gonna get you in trouble. God bless his soul. He's a bad omen in human flesh." She paused and looked back at him. "Have you been to see her lately?"
"No. I'm thinking I'll pay her a visit tonight. She's been on my mind a lot."
On Friday, Leia went to her mother's grave. She talked about why she hadn't visited often and about the new wife her father had. She went on to talk about Patrick though she didn't remember where it came from. She asked for guidance though she wasn't sure if she would get it. Her mother never did like 'American boys.' After spending hours there, she left, walking down the large stone steps to her taxi. It had just rained and she slipped on the last few steps.
Gabe and Rio were both called from the hospital when Leia needed to complain about the service. They were completely shocked that she had broken her arm and only called to complain about food but not to actually tell them she had broken her arm. It didn't delay her plans, however. That night she got on a plan back home. Both Rio and Gabe met her at the Airport the next morning.
"Green cast?" Gabe asked as he started writing hearts all over it.
"It was that or pink and I didn't want to wear pink," she said.
"Pink looks good on you."
"I know."
Patrick sat there looking over his bank statements. It had only been a few days that his brother had been staying with him, but already he was nearly broke. "You have to quit drinking," he sighed. "This is just ridiculous. You've bought five cases of beer today alone. I can't afford this!"
"Ah, quit worrying ye pansy. I'll take care of it," he assured him, downing another beer.
"Of course you will," he sighed.
"How was your trip besides breaking your arm?"
"It was ok. My phone didn't work there so every time my dad call it went to voice messaging. When I landed I had about ten messages asking me if I was serious about moving and changing schools." She laughed. "Sucks that I couldn't torture him and tell him where I was. He would have a cow."
"Are you feeling better?" Gabe asked as they walked through the mall.
"Yes, I am."
"Yes...I realize it. This would just be a temporary loan." Patrick sat in one of those quick cash places in the mall. They were checking his financial records and credit rating to see if he would qualify.
"Of course sir," the lady said, nearly ignoring him as she finished the paperwork.
When it was finally through he took the money and put it in his coat. It would pay the bills for now.
Leia watched from a far as Patrick took the money. Gabe and Rio were about to say something but once Patrick was gone, so was Leia. She walked straight up to the lady. "Hi," she said and slipped her father's card to the lady.
"Ms...Ms..." the lady stuttered as she read the card.
"That's right. I'm the daughter of the owner. I want to speak to your manager," she said as she sat down.
The lady rushed out and the manger rushed in. Leia smiled. "That Irish man that just came in...I want to pay off his loan."
"Of course. He must be a close friend," the manager said as he started pulling out paper work.
"Something like that," she said as she pulled out her credit card.
After that was all done, she said nothing to the boys as they started to the car.
Patrick took the money and went straight to the bank. He nodded to the lady as he cashed it. The bills would come through and he'd have twenty dollars left till payday.... He could make it. It was only a week. "Okay," he said as he walked in. "I've taken care of the mon-"
He stopped when he saw his brother on the bed with a hooker. There was white powder on the ground and a needle sitting on the night stand.
"What the fuck!"
"Are you going to tell him?" Gabe asked.
"Tell him what?"
"That you are still...in like with him?"
Leia looked at him. "He wants me out of his life."
"You just paid off his loan," he said. "I think he will find out."
"I've also paid his bills for the next six months..." she said softly.
Rio gasped. "Leia..."
"He won't notice."
"I think he will."
Nothing.
Gabe bit his lip and looked over at Rio who shrugged slowly. "I'll call you later, ok?" He left her there in her room and walked down to the car with Rio. Taking one last look up at the apartment, he got into the car and they went to school.
