A gun was pressed against Leia's temple. "Unless you want to die, I suggest you shut the hell up," Shamus ordered. "Your daddy screwed us all over. You're lucky that we've been generous enough to keep you alive. Don't try our patience."
Slipping off his shoes, Patrick kept low as he started for the run down house. Even though it looked like it was falling apart, it was exactly how he remembered. Flipping the knife in his hand, he went through the back door. He was silent, moving through the shadows, trying his best to remember which boards would creak beneath his weight.
Leia slowly brought her hand to the necklace around her neck. It was something she was given years ago. Gabe had called it their 'break up' promise. After the marriage was called off, he promised to still be there for her if she ever needed him. She wondered if he would pull through this time. Closing her eyes, she felt her body shaking from the cold and the fear.
"It's been an hour. Call him," glasses ordered. Shamus groaned and grabbed Leia's cell. Dialing Pat's number, he waited.
There was the whimsical noise which echoed throughout the desolate building.
"What the-"
Glasses turned and looked at the direction it was coming from. His gun was drawn as he walked toward it. Kicking over a fallen piece of wood, he saw the phone on the ground. "What the hell is this?"
"Boo." Patrick moved from the shadows, his knife going up into glasses's arm. The blade stuck through his forearm, earning a scream from glasses. Yanking the gun out of the man's hand, he twisted and pointing it into his mouth and pulled the trigger. Blood spattered the walls as he yanked the knife out of him.
Shamus held his gun out in the darkness. "I know it's you brother," he laughed. "I take it you didn't bring my money."
No answer.
"Damn it! I need that money! I'm dead without that money!"
"You're dead because of it." Patrick was behind him, his blade pressed against Shamus's throat. "You better be glad that you're my own blood. If it wasn't for that fact you'd be dead by now." Taking the knife, he slammed the hilt into the back of his head. From there he quickly moved to Leia and cut through the restraints.
Gabe and Rio jumped at the sound of the gun shot. "Leia!" Gabe yelled.
Leia felt like she was floating in space. Moving her hands felt like moving rocks. She didn't even reacted to the gun shot or the fact that there was a dead man on the floor. Mostly because she couldn't see but blurs.
"Come on," he whispered. Picking her into his arms, he walked through the pool of blood back out the back door to where Rio and Gabe were waiting. "She's drugged, but I don't see any real damage to her."
Gabe and Rio rushed to him. Gabe pulled Leia into his arms. "Oh God...I'm never leaving you again. You're coming home," he said and she was pulled tightly against his chest.
"Cold..." she whispered. Rio took off his jacket and put it over her.
"She's been in a cold house for twenty four hours...we should take her to the hospital."
Patrick looked down at himself. Blood covered his feet, the bottom of his pants, and his shirt. "Go ahead and take her," he told them. "I'll meet you at the hospital just as soon as I can."
They didn't argue. They took Leia to the car and drove off without looking back.
Patrick didn't bother to wait before going back inside to deal with his brother. He looked down at the man he killed, regret feeling his very being. He hadn't meant to.... It had just happened. He saw Leia there and he lost control. Grabbing Shamus, he lifted him up, pinning him against the wall. "You're dead to me," he whispered coldly.
Gabe hovered over Leia as Rio talked to the doctor. The police had been all over them from the moment Leia had been found and the public was noted. Reports covered door outside Leia's room and she had yet woken up. IVs hung off her and her steady heart was on the monitor with loud beeps while Gabe held her hand.
Rio came back in and sat on the other side of Leia, taking her other hand. "There were so many tranquilizers in her system. The doctors are scared she might have trouble adjusting...parts of her brain could shut down..." he said softly.
Gabe only nodded.
The freezing night air completely numbed him as he made the trek back to civilization. He should have called his driver, but he knew that he'd need this time to think, to contemplate what had just happened. What he had done. What had been done to Leia. By the time he finally got back to Leia's house, nearly two hours had passed since everything had happened. Going straight upstairs, he jumped in the shower to clean off. His skin was still numb. He could feel the droplets of water, but at the same time he couldn't. Getting dressed, he finally called his driver to take him to the hospital.
While Rio sat next to Leia's sleeping form, Gabe was on the phone covering Patrick's traces. Using Leia's emergency money, he had Patrick's old family house burned down and any signs of blood gone. He wasn't sure what happened in that house but he knew a gun went off and someone could have died. He didn't want Leia to wake and be mad that Patrick was in jail for something that could have been covered up. In the morning, Leia's father showed up playing the sensitive father that had just found his most prized possession.
Gabe and Rio hovered, wouldn't let him in the room. "Move," Mr. Johnson said with stern eyes.
"You wanted her dead. You'll have to have us removed if you want to go in there," Rio snapped.
"And don't think we won't tell the whole fucking world that you turned you back on her when she was kidnapped. Walk away, Mr. Johnson or so help me I will ruin your name," Gabe warned.
Mr. Johnson's hands fisted but he did nothing. Above everything, his name was the one thing that he could not ever afford to ruin. It made him what he was and he couldn't have the people thinking he wasn't what he pretended to be.
"How is she?" Patrick hadn't slept since this whole incident occurred. He wasn't even bothering to hide his accent right now. With a soda in one hand and a vending machine sandwich in the other, he was simply preparing for the long haul with her.
Rio and Gabe stood as Patrick walked in. It was mid afternoon. They were surprised he had somehow made it through the reporters and security. "No change...she's just sleeping."
He just nodded as he took a chair and sat down. "I see." Taking another sip from his soda, he closed his eyes and tried to relax. "I see that Leia's father is here. He's out talking to all the reporters."
"Yeah...but he's not coming in here. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried smothering her," Gabe said coldly. He sat down and Rio followed. He softened. "I burned your family house...they didn't find any bodies so I assumed you...took care of them..."
Patrick froze as he heard this. "Ye burned down my home?" His hands played with his drink while he took small bites of his sandwich. "I see. Yes. I guess that that everything has been taken care of then."
"It was for the best. It's something Leia would do."
"I'm not entirely certain that burning down a man's home is for the best," he muttered. Finishing his sandwich, he stood and tossed the wrapper into the trash can in the room. "What happened in there...it was a case of self defense. Nothing more."
Rio and Gabe nodded. "I'm sure."
"Of course."
Even he thought their voices sounded slightly patronizing. Walking over to Leia, he caressed her cheek tenderly. "I hate that this happened to her. She deserved better. She deserved her father to actually be there for her."
"She has us. That's all she needs," Gabe said.
Patrick couldn't help but smirk. Us. That was the first time that they'd really considered him one of them. "Aye," he whispered. "That she does."
Rio took a deep breath. "I don't mean to point out the elephant in the room...but...you slept with Lilith...the day she got kidnapped..."
"Rio, maybe now is not the time-"
"I think I have a right to know why he did it. I mean...even if Leia said it was ok, if you had any feelings for her, you would have said no then...well, let's see...not see Lilith again!" Rio yelled.
"Keep your voice down." Gabe pulled him down to sit. "I'm not happy about this either but he saved Leia so shut your mouth and be grateful."
Rio pulled from him. "I'm happy she's here and safe, but not only was it him who cheated on her, but it was his brother who took her!"
"He is no brother of mine. Not anymore," Patrick said. His hand stayed on Leia's cheek. Taking a deep breath, he turned and gave them his feeble explanation. "Lilith is an exceptionally attractive woman. Gabe, apparently ye can testify to this. From what I heard even you were excited by her."
"Working with her father everyday, I was bound to see her and feel these attractions. Leia and I wanted to see if it was anything more than physical. It was her idea for me to do what I did, so therefore I did it. That way I would know what Lilith meant to me."
"We know the story. Leia told us," Rio snapped. "It doesn't excuse the fact that you slept with her. You're an adult for Christ sake! Does sleeping with another girl while seeing someone make sense to you? Leia isn't one to say what's on her mind or how she feels but the day she told us you were sleeping with Lilith...she said she wasn't ok." Rio looked at Leia. "Have you ever seen a heart break before your eyes? Well...that's what we saw. And I didn't even know she felt that crazy about you. A part of her had hoped you would say no. That you would say you didn't need to sleep with someone else to know that she was enough for you. But you are just too stupid to know something like that. You are just like most men out there. You think with your crotch."
"Rio!" Gabe gasped. "Enough!"
"Yes. You are correct. I was thinking with my crotch." He admitted it. There was really no point in denying it. "It's okay, Gabe. Let him yell at me now rather then when Leia is awake to overhear it."
"I'm already awake," Leia groaned. Heads turned to her. "I've been pretending to be asleep for a few hours. I kinda liked being thought so highly of," she smirked.
"Leia," Gabe whispered and moved on top of her to hug her. "I-"
"If you say you were scared and pull that mushy crap on me, I swear I'm going to puke," she said rolling her eyes.
Gabe pulled back with happy tears in her eyes. Leia looked at Rio who looked ashamed. "And you. What gives? Why are you so protective?" He opened his mouth but she cut him off. "Thanks I suppose...and I suppose you are right too. Mr. McClain is kind of a jerk." She smirked at that and leaned towards Gabe as he curled up on the bed next to her. He pulled her tightly to him.
Patrick gave a sigh of relief as she finally started to move. "I am glad that ye are alright," he whispered.
"Yeah...though...I think I'm coming down with something. My head is killing me," she said.
"You were in the cold for a full day..." Gabe said as she moved into his chest. He stroked her hair.
"You were late. Your fault."
"Sorry..."
"I'll think about forgiving you."
There was a knock on the door and Rio stood. He answered it and someone walked in with a large thing of roses. Rio grabbed the card and started to read it. "Wish I could get pass security to see you-Vince Daniels."
Leia looked at the roses. "There has to be a few dozen..." She looked at Rio. "Let him in?" Rio nodded and walked out the door to go find Vince.
Patrick moved closer to her. Leaning down, he kissed her cheek. "I'm sorry that I wasn't there when this happened. That is was my own flesh and blood which did this to you."
"I figured that out when he spoke. His voice sounded a lot like yours. And the other voice was the guy that came to see me about your Michael committing treason," she said. She tried to pry herself from Gabe. "Really...you are over stepping my hugging boundaries."
Slowly Gabe pulled from her just as the door opened. He got off the bed and helped her sit up as Rio and Vince walked in. "Leia, it's good to know you are safe. You are all over the news," he said. "Like the roses?"
She smiled and nodded. "Sure I do. They are the only flowers I got."
He smiled and moved to her side. His fingers went to her cheeks. "You feel a bit warm. Might be coming down with something. How about I bring your school work to you and tutor you after school so you can take a few days off?"
Leia groaned. "Couldn't let school work be ignored huh?"
"You need an education," Gabe, Vince, and Rio said all at the same time.
"Ok...that was a little freaky...."
Slipping off his shoes, Patrick kept low as he started for the run down house. Even though it looked like it was falling apart, it was exactly how he remembered.
