Chapter 2: Tomorrow Is A Different Day

~

There was an abrupt drop in Joey's heart rate; the heart monitor started beeping frantically because of the flat line on the screen, causing doctors from all over the hospital to rush into Joey's room. Yami and Yugi shrunk away from the commotion, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. They did not want to leave Joey's room.

"He needs a blood transfusion, NOW!" a female doctor screeched. "What blood type is he?"

"O Negative," the male doctor responded quickly. "But we don't have any of that blood type left in the storage room. . .he can ONLY receive O Negative, or else he will have a reaction. . ."

"Does anyone here have O Negative blood?" another doctor asked. There was utter silence following his inquiry.

/Is Joey going to be okay, Yami?/

//Yes, I'm sure they'll find somebody to give him blood.//

/I hope so…/

**When you say that it's gonna be**

~*~

"Doctor, he's not breathing." The numb voice came from the female doctor.

~*~

**It always turns out to be a different way**

~*~

/What if Joey doesn't make it? I don't know WHAT I'd do. . ./

//Don't worry. He'll make it. Trust me.//

~*~

**I try to believe you. . .

. . .But not today. . .**

All of a sudden, the last person Yugi expected to see burst into Joey's room.

"Kaiba?!" Yugi exclaimed.

"I came over as soon as I heard there was trouble," he grunted.

'But…I thought Kaiba hated Joey. Maybe is Yami wrong?'

Kaiba sat down on a chair and rolled up his sleeve. "Take my blood," he ordered. "It's O Negative, same as Joey's."

The female doctor, whose nametag read, "Dr. Chaoskee," grabbed a plastic band from the table and wrapped it around Kaiba's arm.

"Make a fist," she commanded, snatching a syringe from the medicine cart. She thrust the needle into Kaiba's arm, drawing a significant amount of blood. Kaiba winced, groaning inwardly. The blood transfusion began, Kaiba's blood flowing directly into Joey's body.

'Why would Kaiba go through all of this trouble just to save Joey?' Yugi wondered.

Yami must've heard Yugi's thought, because Yugi heard a reply coming from his other half:

//He's probably trying to make himself look innocent. Or perhaps he's realized what he's done is wrong. It's called, 'undoing.' It's a psychological defense mechanism used during times like this.//

/I don't know, Yami. . .I mean, he's innocent until proven guilty, isn't he?/

//Well, he's acting pretty guilty now. I say we interrogate him as soon as this ordeal is over with.//

/Maybe we should give him a little breathing space first, before we grill him, Yami./

~*~

**I don't know how I'll feel. . .

Tomorrow**

~*~

Yugi stared as the blood slowly began to drain out of Kaiba's face. His face was pale, tinged with gray. Yugi glanced at the heart monitor, hoping to see improvement in Joey's condition. Joey's heart was pumping once again, although his pulse was weak.

"Mr. Kaiba, we can't draw any more blood from you," Dr. Chaoskee informed him, "or we'll have another problem on our hands. We've already sent for some more blood; it's being transported here as we speak."

It was then when the alarms sounded once more. Joey's heart rate had gone dangerously low, and he was in need of an immediate blood transfusion.

"Take my blood," Kaiba instructed, his voice hoarse. "He needs it; I'll be fine. As long as he makes it."

~*~

**Tomorrow,

I don't know what to say. . .

Tomorrow. . .

Tomorrow is a different day**

~*~

"Mr. Kaiba--"

"Save it," Kaiba interrupted. "Make sure Joey lives. He just HAS to live. Or I'd never forgive myself…"

//That's it! He's confessing to his crime!//

/Yami, what he said didn't mean anything. He's probably really light-headed from his own lack of blood. Just give him a chance to explain himself./

//As you wish…//

Moments later, Joey's heart rate went back up again to normal.

"He's going to make it!" Dr. Chaoskee cried. "He's actually going to make it!!"

Yugi turned to Kaiba, who looked worse than ever. "Kaiba. . .?"

The corners of Kaiba's lips curved upwards, revealing a weak smile. "He's going to live," he stated, his voice thin.

"Kaiba, are you going to be all right?"

"Hai…" he replied, but his voice was shaky and unconvincing. Kaiba leaned his head back against the wall and closed his eyes, panting slightly. Seconds later, he fell over, unconscious.
