"Yes, I'll tell her... okay... good-bye," Shiori sighed as she hung up the phone. This was the third time this week that that Urameshi boy had called to talk to Shuichi, but Shiori had been told by Shuichi to tell everyone who called for her that she was either not home or busy. Shiori sighed again, she really felt sorry for that Urameshi boy. He seemed so distressed about something, and it wasn't just him either. Some of Shuichi's little school friends were calling and asking to talk to her, too. All of them seemed just as upset.

She was really starting to get worried about her. Shuichi seemed to be distancing herself, not only from her friends, but from Shiori as well! Shuichi wasn't speaking to her the way she use to. She hardly even saw her anymore. Everyday after school, Shuichi would come home and lock herself in her room. She even suspected that Shuichi wasn't eating or sleeping right. She looked thinner and dark circles had developed under her eyes.

Shiori bit down on her lower lip. What was happening to her little girl? Surely Shuichi knew that she could talk to her about anything. So why was she pulling away from her? Shiori felt a wave of horror wash over her. Could it be that she was on drugs?

No, no. She thought, shaking her head as if to erase the very idea from her heard. I raised Shuichi-chan better than that.

Another horrific thought came to her just then. What if Shuichi was pregnant? She was dating now, and, despite the fact that Shuichi was an intelligent young girl, boys had a way of getting what they want from sweet, innocent girls like Shuichi.

No. I can't think like that. Shuichi is a good girl! She knows better than to do something like that. I'll just have to bite the bullet and talk to her.

Just then, Shiori heard the front door open and close and she knew right away that it was Shuichi. Speak of the devil... she thought with a small smile on her face. "Shuichi-chan!" she called. "Could you come here for a moment."

She heard a faint sigh as Shuichi trudged over to her. "Yes mother," she said flatly.

Shiori couldn't help but notice the dark circles around her eyes and how red and puffy they looked. "Come and sit with me in the dinning room," she said. "We need to talk."

She noticed her stiffen a little bit as they made their way into the dinning room. Shiori, ducked into the kitchen to retrieve the tea that she had been brewing. She set up a neat little tray for the two of them and couldn't help but giggle a little bit. She knew that she was about to have a serious talk with her daughter, but it made her happy. When she was a little girl, she had always daydreamed about having a daughter that she could sit around and have tea with. Shuichi was her little girl, but she was such a tomboy and they never really had time for such things. It was such a shame that they had have this little moment on such a sad note.

She came back into the dinning room and set the tray down in front of Shuichi. It was filled with tea cakes and things like sugar and honey to add to the tea. She had set the tray down purposely so that the cakes were almost right under Shuichi's nose. She knew that Shuichi would be able to see right through her, that she would know that she had seen her thin little body and was begging her to eat something. Shuichi reluctantly took one of the cups and poured herself some tea, adding a little bit of sugar, but she completely avoided the tea cakes. Shiori's heart sank a little bit at that.

"Shuichi-chan," she said softly, almost patronizingly, "we need to talk. You haven't spoken to me in so long, and I'm starting to worry about you."

Shuichi looked down at her cup as she began to stir her tea with her spoon. "I know I've been a bit... secretive lately, but I can assure you mother, there is nothing for you to be worried about."

She gave her a small smile. "How do I know that if you don't say something? I just want to know what's going on in your life."

Shuichi bit her lower lip and continued to stir her drink. "There's nothing to say."

"Your friend Urameshi called today," she said, trying to see if she'd get some type of reaction from her. She was a little pleased and yet worried when an annoyed look crossed Shuichi's face. "He said something about being very sorry about an incident that took place last week. What was he talking about?"

"Nothing," Shuichi said flatly. "We just had a little fight, that's all."

"A lot of your other friends have been calling too," she said, still wanting to find out more. "There was Myoko, Minako, and even a boy named Kuwabara I believe. They all seem to be worried about you. This doesn't seem like 'nothing' to me."

"... I broke up with my boyfriend..." she said finally, her voice just barely above a whisper.

So that was it. All this over a boy. Her heart went out to her poor daughter. She was young once and knew that, as the saying goes, breaking up was hard to do. She rested her hand on Shuichi's shoulder and gave her a light squeeze. "Oh Shuichi-chan," she said softly. "Did he... leave you?"

She finally let go of the spoon and pushed her cup away from her, bowing her head so that her eyes were hidden behind her beautiful red hair. Her shoulders began to shake and Shiori moved to grab her and hold her tight. She held her close and began to rub her back in soothing circles. "Shhh, shh. It's alright darling."

Shuichi was limp in her arms, save for the slight shakes that her tears had caused. "It's just been so... hard!" she said between sobs. She sniffled and began again. "I mean... I broke up with him! And yet I..." she began to trail off as the tears came harder. It was clear that she'd been holding this in for quite sometime. "I thought I was doing the right thing..."

"Oh Shuichi-chan..."

"I feel so bad... and I feel even worse when I think about him!" Shuichi pulled away slightly and sat herself straight again. Shiori went to the kitchen and quickly got some napkins for her. Shuichi, dried her eyes and then continued. "You should have seen him," she sniffed. "He was practically on his knees begging me not to leave... and I did it anyway! Breaking up with someone was never this hard before!"

Shiori stiffened. "Before?" she repeated. What was Shuichi talking about? Had there been other boys before this one? She'd never even heard Shuichi talk about anyone else. "Shuichi, what do you mean 'before'?"

"I mean... when my friends talk about breaking up with there boyfriends... they make it seem so easy..." she said as she continued to wipe her eyes with the napkin.

Shiori relaxed a bit. For a second she had thought Shuichi had been keeping boyfriends from her. She rested her hand on her daughter's shoulders and couldn't help but notice how sweet and innocent she looked. "There there," she said lovingly. "It's not easy for everyone. I remember when I broke up with my first boyfriend. I cried of three days straight."

"I just can't believe I did this to him," she whispered. "I mean, Hiei wasn't just in love with me... he was obsessed with me! And I betrayed him! I broke his heart..." she looked down at her hands as if they belonged to someone else. "I'm a monster..."

"But how do you feel about this?"

Shuichi blinked a few times. She looked at Shiori, confusion written all over her face. "W-What?"

"Shuichi-chan," Shiori began as she moved her chair so that she could sit opposite Shuichi. She grabbed her hands and gave them a gentle squeeze. "You've been talking about feeling bad for hurting someone else, but you didn't tell me how you feel about the break up. If you broke up with him, it must have been for a good reason. Is this just about you feeling sorry for Hiei? Or do you still have feelings for him?"

Shuichi thought about this for a while. "I..." she began. "At first, I pitied him. I just looked at him as if he were a little boy with a crush on a movie star. Then, I fell in love with him, but it was hard. It was hard for me to do things with him in public. I could barely even hold his hand... let alone kiss him. I couldn't give him what he needed. So, I thought that it wasn't fair for him. I decided that, sooner or later, we were going to break up once he realized I wasn't the goddess that he imagined me to be. So I saved us sometime and just let him go."

"But you still love him..." Shiori said, rather than asked.

"... yes..."

"Shuichi-chan, you took the easy way out. Instead of working with Hiei on this relationship, you just gave up and that's not my Shuichi. Maybe you should give it another try."

Shuichi looked ready to cry again. "I can't..." she said weakly.

"Why not?"

Tears began to run down her already damp cheeks. "Because I don't know where he is!" she sobbed. "Besides... he hates me! I know it!"

Shiori moved to cradle Shuichi in her arms once more. This was just one problem after another.

AN: I know this is going to sound stupid and it's likely that you really don't care, but my favorite teacher left my school today and I'm really upset. The only reason I'm even posting this chapter is because I had a good idea from a friend and she helped me to think of an ending! So if your reading this Amanda, this chapter's for you!
