Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha or any of the characters in the Inuyasha cast. In this story, Kisa is not the Kisa from Fruits Basket. I'm just using the name. But the story line in this story is all my idea, to anyone who may make or have made any similar stories is by coincidence.

Chapter Eleven:

“What is it?” Miroku was standing close to enough to hear is friend. He looked over the man's shoulder to read the report, even though he wasn't allowed to look at it, he was sure. His became the size of gulf balls. “Wait, is that `Higurashi' as in…”

“Kagome's brother.” Inuyasha wanted to punch himself in the face. How could he not have recognized the kid? He was just brought into the station just a few weeks ago for crying out loud! It was all making since now. How she became extremely quiet once they started looking at the body, how she seemed so positive about his age, why she didn't come in yesterday, why the chief called her to his office…

Something hit him just then.

He took her off the case. Of course he would, the victim was Kagome's family. He would obviously assume it would be too personal for her. But he's wrong, he thought, she's one of the best detective's I've known. She be more dedicated to this case, of all cases. Besides, this mean Sai would probably bring in another cop and he didn't want to work with another cop. He wanted his partner.

“Oh my god…” Bankotsu was curious as to why the two men were suddenly speechless.

Inuyasha got out of his chair without warning and headed for Toutousai's office. He didn't bother knocking.

“Inuyasha what are you -“

“You can't take her off this case.” He interrupted. He couldn't believe he was doing this. Since when did he care?

“Inuyasha, I don't have a choice. This case would be too personal for her -“
“Which is exactly why you have to give it to her!” he paused, “Think about it, she hasn't been with us for very long but during the time she has we've noticed she's one of the best you've got and I know you know this too so don't deny it!”

“Yes Inuyasha, I understand that but she could end up doing something she might regret.”

“Like what?” he forced himself to keep his voice at a low.

“This is her brother we're talking about here. What if you do find his murderer? What do think she's going to do? Keep in mind, Inuyasha, she does have a gun. She wouldn't be going out of her way to pull a trigger.”

“This is Kagome we're talking about here! She's not going to take one look at them and shoot `em! She's too professional for that.” He was about to tell him that if she shot him. It didn't really matter, whoever did this deserved to die. But he didn't want to give Toutousai any reason to take him off as well.

“Even if she that was the case, it still wouldn't be wise to give it to her.”

“Toutousai, I would not be in here if I didn't think -“

“Kagome, I'm sure, is too emotional to work anyway. She'll easily get distracted. It won't have her undivided attention.”

“But you're wrong!” Toutousai rose his eyebrows at that…and the volume of Inuyasha's voice. “Because this is her brother on the slab she'll put everything she has into it! Do you not see how early she came in today?”

This made his boss think. He had a point there. “Inuyasha…”

“Toutousai, please, I wouldn't be in here if I wasn't absolutely sure.” His voice was softer.

Toutousai looked up from underneath his reading glasses and thought for a moment. He sat up straight and sighed, “You know if you were any one else, this would be the last thing I'd do.” Inuyasha didn't know what to make of that. “Ok, she's back on.” The detective let out a blow of air he didn't realize he was holding in. “But…if I suspect anything- and I mean anything—that would support what I am expecting she's off and I'm taking you off as well. NO exceptions.”

“Fine.” Inuyasha accepted the circumstances. Sai leaned back into his chair and waved the man off. Once Inuyasha left he couldn't help but ask himself, “What in hell am I doing?” Talk about trusting your employees.

Kagome changed into her pajamas, black tank top and purple pajama pants. She had been fighting back tears for two days now. It was starting to get hard. But she couldn't, if did she wouldn't be able to stop. Besides, it would send everyone the impression that she was vulnerable. She learned her lesson at an early age.

When she walked into the living room she noticed the box full of videotapes Bankotsu and he had pulled out when they had him over. She thought she had told to put them back in his room…when she went to pick them up by the handles in the sides of it, it ripped and the tapes poured out onto the floor. When she saw them laying there, for some reason, she let her legs collapse from beneath her and leaned on the wall behind her.

She couldn't believe he was gone. Wasn't it just last week that he was arguing with Kisa over what movie they wanted to watch…

Kisa…she didn't know yet. Kagome looked at the clock above the kitchen sink. She was out of school by now. Kagome didn't want to do this.

“Hello?” The phone only rang once. The girl was waiting for him to call.

“Hi…Kisa…” Kagome's voice was quiet.

“Kagome? Souta hasn't been at school, is he ok? When I didn't hear from him I was starting to get worried…” As she listen to herself talk, the high school noticed that it was Kagome that was calling and Souta.

“Listen, Kisa…I'm sorry for doing this over the phone but…” Her voice cracked.

“Kagome? What is it?” Panic was slowly arising in her voice.

“Kisa, Souta's dead.”

It went silent. Kagome knew she was still there. She didn't expect her to say anything so she continued. “Saturday night…when you called me…I had just arrived to a crime scene and…well…”

“No…”
“Kisa, I know, believe me…I know.”
She didn't answer her.
“I'm going to go. If you need me just call. Ok?”
“…Yeah.”
“Bye.” Kagome hung up the phone once the line went dead.

The second the phone was back on the hook, the she heard a knock at the door. Great, people to deal with. She opened the door to find the least likely person to be at her place standing at her door with a solemn look on his face.

She looked at him, confusingly. He was uncomfortable here and when she didn't say anything it was only making it worse. “Umm, is alright if I come in?”

She hesitated, “Yeah…sure.” She stepped aside to let him in.

After a few seconds of awkward silence she decided to break it, “Inuyasha, what are you doing here?” she didn't sound angry or impatient, just quiet. He noticed she wouldn't look at him. Her arms were crossed when he turned to look at her

“I assumed you'd want to know that you're back on the case…” That got Kagome to look at him, “…with me.”

“What?” she couldn't believe what she hearing. Just a few hours ago, Toutousai was telling her he didn't want her around. And now here, Inuyasha was in her apartment, telling her the complete opposite.

Inuyasha understood the look he was getting, “When I realized what he called you in for…I talked to him. But we both gotta be professional about it or he'll take us both --“
He was babbling.
“Why?”
“Well I convinced him to -“
“No, I mean…why did you…”

“If was in your shoes, I would want to be the one to put away the bastard who did this.” She couldn't help but smile a little as she looked at her feet, arms still crossed. “Not to mention, they would've given me some rookie to work with and then there would be more than one person to arrest.” He said this as he examined a picture, on the coffee table, of Bankotsu with Kagome on his back. They were smiling widely as Souta was towards the bottom of the picture just below Bankotsu making a silly face. He noticed they all look like they were in there teens.

Inuyasha couldn't help but to hope that, in the long run, he would get to see that Kagome one day. When he looked back at her he knew he would have to wait patiently for it.

“You could've just called, you know.” Her voice was a bit stronger.
“I know.” He answered a-matter-of-factly. He noticed the mess of video tapes, then. “What's with the video tapes?”

Kagome seemed confused until she saw what he was looking at. “Oh, I was cleaning up. The box ripped on me.” She shrugged as she walked toward them. She had forgotten about them. As she gathered them up a hand handed her a couple. One had `The Waking of Kagome' written on it. The other, `Summer Oh-One'. She took them without looking at him.

“The Waking of Kagome?” He smiled at the thought.
“They were Souta's.” She answered emotionlessly as she set them by the door of what use to be Souta's bedroom. She wasn't ready to go in there yet.

Inuyasha took note of that. “Sorry…”
“Of what?” she acted as if he had nothing to be sorry for.

The expression she was giving him was making the paleness of her skin stand out. “Kagome, not that it's any of my business, but…have you eaten all in the last two days?”

Her face snapped up to look at him. Where did that come from? For some reason, it was angering her. “I agree with you, it isn't any of your business.” She practically snapped.

He didn't expect that. “Kagome, you don't look like you've been taking care yourself.”

“And your point…?”

“Kagome I understand that you're -“

“I think it's time for you to leave, now.” She said sternly. Who did he think he was? Her mother? He's just worried about you…her mind informed her. Bullshit. He was an asshole. He didn't care about anyone but himself. Then why did he go out of his way to get you back on the case and then come to tell you personally? Her subconscious argued with her.

“Kagome, you're going to make yourself -“Kagome interrupted him. And his temper was starting to flare.

“Inuyasha, if you've said all that you came here to say then I suggest you leave!” He was getting personal and the way she dealt with this was none of his business.

“Who aid I did all that I came here to do?” He yelled back at her.

“Then what did you come here to do?”

“I came to…I came to…” when he saw her waiting for him to finish, his body took over.

Before either of them could register what was happening, Inuyasha's lips were on hers. Surprisingly, to the both of them, Kagome didn't pull away. At first, her eyes were wide with shock. But, as Inuyasha put his fingers around her neck and the palm of his hand on her cheek, the kiss slowly became deeper and her eyelids suddenly became heavy.

Inuyasha couldn't believe what he was doing. He didn't plan to do this. All he was expecting was to get in, tell she was back on, and get out. And now he was kissing her. He didn't realize how much he had wanted to do this until now. It felt good…it felt right. And the fact that Kagome didn't pull away gave him goose bumps.

And like that, it was over. When they pulled apart, they were both dazed. “…do that.” He finally finished his sentence in a whisper.

Kagome just stood there as he turned to leave as fast as he could. When the door shut, she lightly touched her lips, still dazed.

Author's Note: I know, didn't expect it huh? I couldn't either. I had writer's block for this chapter so when it finally came to me it put me in shock. But now that I look at it, it seems right…well, to me that is. Be sure to review!
